Objective: The aim of this study was to examine how dental students vary their viewing patterns of panoramic radiographs during different levels of dental education. Methods: Two groups of students (total number = 48, n = 24) in different grades (second and fifth clinical semester) were compared. The second clinical semester participated twice, as during the second clinical semester a specific lecture on dental radiology and diagnosis is held. The first viewing took place at the beginning of the semester (2a), the second at the end of it (2e). The fifth semester (5e) represents students shortly before graduation. Soft X-ray holography is a recently developed imaging technique with sub-50 nm spatial resolution. Key advantages of this technique are magnetic and elemental sensitivity, compatibility with imaging at free electron laser facilities, and immunity to in-situ sample excitations and sample drift, which enables the reliable detection of relative changes between two images with a precision of a few nanometers. High-resolution multidetector computed tomography with multiplanar reformations and 3-D postprocessing often provides the detail necessary for preoperative assessment of facial injuries. Maxillofacial fractures are classified in the following manner: upper face fractures, midface fractures (the most frequent), Le Fort fractures, and lower face or mandible fractures. The facial skeleton is a framework of vertical and horizontal buttresses that ensures a better resistance to trauma, but serves also as reference for maxillofacial surgery to restore facial size and shape. Radiologists should know how to diagnose and report the main types of facial fracture.
MHT-X: Offline Multiple Hypothesis Tracking with Algorithm X

An efficient and versatile implementation of offline multiple hypothesis tracking with Algorithm X for optimal association search was developed using Python. The code is intended for scientific applications that do not require online processing. Directed graph framework is used and multiple scans with progressively increasing time window width are used for edge construction for maximum likelihood trajectories. Treatment for patients with cervical foraminal stenosis that present with cervical radiculopathy has experienced rapid progress. Cervical spine surgical options have improved through advances in imaging, instrumentation, implant innovations and novel surgical techniques. While historical treatments are largely safe, comorbidities associated with procedures such as ACDF, TDR, and posterior foraminotomy beg the question if these procedures are too much surgery for select patients that could benefit from a tissue sparing approach. Characterization of clamp-on current transformers under nonsinusoidal conditions

This paper reports the performance of clamp-on current transformers under nonsinusoidal conditions. A set of experimental measurements helped to determine the ratio and the phase errors under two conditions: 1) sinusoidal excitation with frequencies from 45 to 1000 Hz and 2) nonsinusoidal excitation using the fundamental frequency and one harmonic, with adjusted phase shift. It was found that ratio and phase errors are affected by the phase angle between the harmonic and the fundamental and the harmonic amplitude. A report of an international collaborative experiment to demonstrate the uniformity obtainable using DNA profiling techniques

This paper describes a collaborative exercise intended to demonstrate whether uniformity of DNA profile results could be achieved between different European laboratories. It was shown that this goal can be obtained provided that a common protocol is followed (specifically the use of a common electrophoretic buffer as being the most important parameter). Generally, lower molecular weight loci (with lower molecular weight fragments) such as YNH24 perform better than higher molecular weight loci such as MS43a. The results of the exercise are discussed in relation to the objectives of the European DNA profiling group (EDNAP).

Progressive calcifications of lung and liver in neonatal herpes simplex virus infection

We report a female neonate who developed severe septicemia presenting with pneumonia and hepatitis due to an infection with herpes simplex virus type II. In spite of antiviral as well as intensive care therapy, three weeks after admission, extensive hepatic calcification was demonstrable on abdominal radiograph, a sign of severe cellular necrosis. In contrast the pulmonary infiltration recovered completely. The clinical follow up was completed by ultrasound and radiography. The infant died at the age of two months secondary to severe postnecrotic hepatic failure.
