Introducing the Human Factor in Predictive Modelling: a Work in Progress

2012

International audience; In this paper we present the results of a study into integrating socio-cultural factors into predictive modelling. So far, predictive modelling has largely neglected the social and cultural dimensions of past landscapes. To maintain its value for archaeological research, therefore, it needs new methodologies, concepts and theories. For this study, we have departed from the methodology developed in the 1990s during the Archaeomedes Project. In this project, cross-regional comparisons of settlement location factors were made by analyzing the environmental context of Roman settlements in the French Rhône Valley. For the current research, we expanded the set of variables…

Economic modelling as a tool to support macroalgal bloom management: a case study (Sacca di Goro, Po river delta)

2003

During the last 20, years, intensive mollusk farming has been developed in coastal waters, mostly in sheltered bays and lagoons. Often, mollusk stocks are threatened by frequent anoxic events from macroalgal blooms. Here, a decision support tool is described to select the optimal short-term strategy to control algal biomasses. Even though long-term and detailed studies of the lagoon systems are required to provide reliable, biologically based policies, we have here developed a simplified analysis that overlooks most of the ecological complexity, but explicitly includes environmental variability and uncertainty in parameter estimation in the economic assessment of the performances of differe…

Defoliation of two-wire vertical trellis: effect on grape quality

2017

ABSTRACTBasal leaves were removed from Cabernet Sauvignon vines trained to a two-wire vertical trellis at fruit set and at veraison. Leaf removal did not modify total soluble solids and titratable acidity at harvest. Defoliation at fruit set of lower cordon recovered the grape anthocyanin composition gap between upper and lower cordons and that produced a positive effect on anthocyanin synthesis. Hence, control of the upper cordon and defoliation of fruit set of the lower cordon treatments showed comparable values of anthocyanins. Defoliation at veraison did not produce any appreciable effect. This study shows that skin anthocyanin composition in a two-wire vertical trellis can be modified …

Shoot Development and Non-Destructive Determination of Grapevine (Vitis vinifera L.) Leaf Area

2017

A non-destructive method for determination of grapevine total leaf area is described. It is based on a highly significant correlation found between shoot leaf area and shoot length of Syrah (Vitis vinifera L.). Total leaf area per vine may be determined by using the equations described, by choosing a representative number of primary and secondary shoots and by knowing the total number of shoots of the plant considered. The equation seemed independent of vigour and terroir and reasonably sensitive to changes in leaf area that occurred independent of altered shoot length. It also allowed for recognition of compensation as a result of canopy manipulation. It would therefore be particularly use…

Application of anti-transpirant to control sugar accumulation in grape berries and alcohol degree in wines obtained from thinned and unthinned vines …

2020

In the last few decades, the accumulation of sugar in grape berries and hence the alcohol degree of wines has been affected by increasing global temperatures. In order to limit plant photosynthetic activity, it is possible to apply anti-transpirant on field, reducing sugar accumulation in berries. In this contest, our aim was to evaluate the efficiency of the application of a di-1-p-menthene-based natural anti-transpirant (Vapor Gard&reg

Hierarchy of factors impacting grape berry mass: separation of direct and indirect effects on major berry metabolites

2018

Final berry mass, a major quality factor in wine production, is determined by the integrated effect of biotic and abiotic factors that can also influence berry composition. Under field conditions, interactions between these factors complicate study of the variability of berry mass and composition. Depending on the observation scale, the hierarchy of the impact degree of these factors can vary. The present work examines the simultaneous effects of the major factors influencing berry mass and composition to create a hierarchy by impact degree. A second objective was to separate the possible direct effects of factors on berry composition from an indirect effect mediated through their impact on…

Évaluer la démocratisation de l'enseignement : la situation française à l'épreuve des comparaisons internationales

2000

Democratization is quite a difficult question, from both a methodological and theoretical point of view, especially when international comparisons are aimed at. Must one consider this process like the diffusion of the good, or focus on competition between groups for acceeding to it ? Indicators will not be the same, neither results, according to the perspective adopted. European comparisons show that if a majority of countries has chosen to equalize educational opportunities through opening access to school, less numerous are those which have tried to act more directly upon the inequalities conveyed by its operating. France has chosen the openness strategy with some delay, one factor being …

GEOV1: LAI, FAPAR essential climate variables and FCOVER global time series capitalizing over existing products. Part 2: Validation and intercomparis…

2013

International audience; This paper describes the scientific validation of the first version of global biophysical products (i.e., leaf area index, fraction of absorbed photosynthetically active radiation and fraction of vegetation cover), namely GEOV1, developed in the framework of the geoland-2/BioPar core mapping service at 1 km spatial resolution and 10-days temporal frequency. The strategy follows the recommendations of the CEOS/WGCV Land Product Validation for LAI global products validation. Several criteria of performance were evaluated, including continuity, spatial and temporal consistency, dynamic range of retrievals, statistical analysis per biome type, precision and accuracy. The…
