Spontaneous splenic rupture after thrombolysis for ischemic stroke.

2015

Spontaneous spleen rupture with no recent report of trauma is an extremely rare and life-threatening cause of intraperitoneal hemorrhage. We present the first case of an atraumatic pathological splenic rupture following alteplase thrombolysis for ischemic stroke.

Haemodynamic predictors of a penetrating atherosclerotic ulcer rupture using fluid-structure interaction analysis

2013

We present preliminary data on the flow-induced haemodynamic and structural loads exerted on a penetrating atherosclerotic aortic ulcer (PAU). Specifically, one-way fluid-structure interaction analysis was performed on the aortic model reconstructed from a 66-year-old male patient with a PAU that evolved into an intramural haematoma and rupture of the thoracic aorta. The results show that elevated blood pressure (117 mmHg) and low flow velocity at the aortic wall (0.15 m/s(2)) occurred in the region of the PAU. We also found a low value of time-averaged wall shear stress (1.24 N/m(2)) and a high value of the temporal oscillation in the wall shear stress (oscillatory shear index = 0.13) in t…

FLOW DIVERTER DEVICE IN THE ACUTE SETTING OF RUPTURED BLISTER LIKE ANEURYSM: A CASE REPORT

2021

Blister-like aneurysms (BLA) are a rare half-dome-shaped aneurysm, with a broad-based appearance, originating more often from a non-branching site of the supraclinoid internal carotid artery (ICA). They are sometimes difficult to recognize due to their morphological changes and high tendency to rupture. BLAs are often undiagnosed and may be detected only after repeated angiograms in the case of acute subarachnoid hemorrhage (SAH). BLA are life-threatening and no consensus has so far been reached on the best management strategy. We describe a patient with a BLA in the left ICA successfully treated by flow-diverting device using intraoperative abciximab bolus, with successful results. Recentl…

Microsurgical Management of Intracranial Aneurysms After Flow Diversion Failure

2019

Subarachnoid hemorrhage (SAH) occurring after an intracranial aneurysm rupture has an incidence of 10.5 per 100,000 person-years and accounts for about 5% of strokes. The resulting outcome depends on several factors including the severity of the initial hemorrhage, rebleeding, perioperative medical management, and the timing and technical success for aneurysm treatment. The overall mortality rates from 32%−67% with 10%–20% of patients with long-term dependence due to brain damage. It is well known that 12% of patients die before achieving medical treatment and 25% die within the first 24 hours. Again, 40%–60% mortality rate occurs within 30 days. Among the surviving patients, about one thir…

Performance of Different Force Fields in Force Probe Simulations

2013

We present detailed force probe molecular dynamic simulations of mechanically interlocked dimeric calix[4]arene-catenanes, comparing the results obtained using three different commonly used force fields (GROMOS G53a5, OPLS-AA, and AMBER GAFF). The model system is well characterized as a two-state system consisting of a closed compact and an elongated structure. Both states are stabilized by a different hydrogen-bond network, and complete separation of the dimer is prevented by the mechanical lock of the entangled aliphatic loops. The system shows fully reversible rebinding meaning that after bond rupture the system rejoins when the external force is relaxed. We present a detailed study of q…

LA CHLAMYDIA PNEUMONIAE È CORRELABILE CON LA ROTTURA DELLA PLACCA ATEROSCLEROTICA? RUPTURE OF THE ATHEROSCLEROTIC PLAQUE: IS CHLAMYDIA PNEUMONIAE A P…

2006

Background. The natural history of atherosclerosis has not clearly been elucidated yet. Some works reported that flogosis plays a role in plaque instability. Why does this inflammatory process start? We investigated the correlation between Chlamydia pneumoniae acute infection and plaque rupture. Methods. We compared blood concentrations of IgM anti-Chlamydia pneumoniae in patients affected by acute myocardial infarction (AMI) and in patients affected by stable angina. Results. Our results showed a minimal statistical difference, with a more positive value in patients with AMI. Subsequently, the group affected by AMI was divided into two subgroups with and without plaque rupture: the subgrou…

Microbeam SEE Analysis of MIM Capacitors for GaN Amplifiers

2018

Broad-beam and microbeam single-event effect tests were performed on metal–insulator–metal capacitors with three different thicknesses of silicon nitride (Si3N4) dielectric insulator: 250, 500, and 750 nm. The broad-beam tests indicated that the devices with the thicker, 500- and 750-nm dielectric did not have a greater breakdown voltage. The surrounding structures of the capacitor were suspected to be a possible cause. Microbeam techniques made it possible to localize the failure location for the 500- and 750-nm devices. The failure occurs in the air bridge structure connected to the top capacitor plate, which can therefore be considered as an edge effect, while for the 250-nm devices, the…

Hermann Minkowski’s Cologne Lecture, “Raum und Zeit”

2018

A century ago, David Hilbert stepped to the podium at a special meeting of the Gottingen Academy of Sciences to recall the achievements of his close friend Hermann Minkowski. Just one month earlier, on 12 January 1909, the 43-year-old Minkowski had died unexpectedly after suffering a ruptured appendix, leaving those close to him in a state of shock. None was more deeply affected than Hilbert, whose memorial lecture (Hilbert 1910) reflects the deep sense of personal loss he felt at that time:

SEGR in SiO${}_2$–Si$_3$N$_4$ Stacks

2014

Abstract. This work presents experimental Single Event Gate Rupture (SEGR) data for Metal–Insulator–Semiconductor (MIS) devices, where the gate dielectrics are made of stacked SiO2–Si3N4 structures. A semi-empirical model for predicting the critical gate voltage in these structures under heavy-ion exposure is first proposed. Then interrelationship between SEGR cross- section and heavy-ion induced energy deposition probability in thin dielectric layers is discussed. Qualitative connection between the energy deposition in the dielectric and the SEGR is proposed. peerReviewed
