AbstractThe photoactivatable bifunctional 3′-arylazido-β-alanyl-2-azido ATP (2,3′-DiN3ATP) has been applied to study the localization of the nucleotide-binding sites of coupling factor 1 (F1ATPase, TF1) from the thermophilic bacterium PS3 by photoaffinity cross-linking. UV irradiation of TF1 in the presence of 2,3′-DiN3ATP results in the nucleotide-dependent formation of various higher molecular mass cross-links formed by two, three or even four α- and/or β-subunits. The differences observed upon photoaffinity cross-linking by the bifunctional 2-azido ATP or 8-azido ATP analog are discussed. AbstractTo localize the nucleotide binding sites of the F1ATPase (TF1) from the thermophilic bacterium PS3 we have used 14C-labeled 8-azido ATP (8-N3ATP) as photoaffmity label. 8-N3ATP is hydrolyzed by the F,ATPase in the absence of ultraviolet light. Irradiation by ultraviolet light of the enzyme in the presence of 8-N3ATP results in reduction of ATPase activity and in preferential nucleotide specific labeling of the α subunits (0.8–0.9 mol 8-N3ATP/TF1,α:β = 4:1). Inactivation and labeling do not depend on the presence of Mg2+. Both effects decrease upon addition of various nucleotide di- or triphosphates.

Our article offers an econometric model of spatial interactions for the empirical analysis of growth in European regions over the period 1980-1995. The model detects spatial spillover effects and makes it possible to take account of the European economy’s strong polarization. More specifically, by factoring in both spatial autocorrelation and spatial heterogeneity, we characterize the economic polarization pattern in European regions, identify convergence clubs, and model them as spatial regimes. Under a bracket-generating condition, we show that the ranges of validity of spectral multiplier estimates of Mihlin--H\"ormander type and wave propagator estimates of Miyachi--Peral type for $\mathscr{L}$ cannot be wider than the corresponding ranges for the Laplace operator on $\mathbb{R}^n$. The result applies to all sub-Laplacians on Carnot groups and more general sub-Riemannian manifolds, without restrictions on the step. Cryopreservation by droplet vitrification was applied to hazelnut (Corylus avellana L.). axillary buds of the Italian cultivated variety Tonda Gentile Romana, which were collected from in vitro growing shoots, immersed in ice cooled PVS2 or PVS3 for 60 or 90 min, then transferred to a droplet of vitrification solution, placed on a strip of aluminium foil, and plunged into liquid nitrogen (LN). Additionally, the effect on the recovery of the mother plant after cryopreservation was evaluated, following a cold pre-treatment at 4 °C for 3 months. New developments in the management of hepatitis C virus infection: focus on boceprevir

Chronic hepatitis C virus infection is an important public health problem, and the standard treatment (combination of pegylated interferon-α and ribavirin) has an effectiveness rate of only 40%-50%. Novel virus-specific drugs have recently been designed, and multiple compounds are under development. The approval for the clinical use of direct-acting antivirals in 2011 (boceprevir [BOC] and telaprevir, viral NS3 protease inhibitors) has increased recovery rates by up to 70%. Therefore, a highly effective treatment has been envisioned for the first time. This paper focuses on BOC and the implementation of new BOC-based treatment regimes.
