Retention of Carvacrol and Ethyl Acetate in Aqueous Gels of Potato Starch and Konjac Glucomannan

2014

The partition coefficients of two volatile compounds in dispersions containing potato starch (PS) and/or konjac glucomannan (KGM) have been determined by the phase ratio variation method using equilibrium headspace analysis by gas chromatography. The influence of the moment when volatile compounds were added and the effect of the polysaccharide dispersions were investigated. For ethyl acetate, retention by KGM was based on viscosity effect. Retention of carvacrol was important when amylose was accessible. The addition of KGM to PS suspensions decreased the retention governed by interactions with starch.

High Lymph Vessel Density and Expression of Lymphatic Growth Factors in Peritoneal Endometriosis

2012

To investigate the occurrence of lymph vessels and lymphangiogenic growth factors in peritoneal lesions, we performed immunohistochemical staining of peritoneal lesions of 37 patients with antibodies against podoplanin (D2-40), lymphatic vessel endothelial hyaluronan receptor 1 (LYVE-1), prospero homeobox protein 1 (Prox-1), vascular epithelial growth factor (VEGF)-C/VEGF-D. Overall, 10 lesions were double stained against D2-40 and von Willebrand factor. The lymph vessel density in peritoneal lesion was significantly higher in comparison with healthy peritoneum. All lymph vessel makers could be detected, whereby the lymph vessel density of LYVE-1- and Prox-1-positive lymph vessels was signi…

Clinical heterogeneity in infantile galactosialidosis

1987

A new case of infantile galactosialidosis is presented. The condition was diagnosed when the patient was 4 months of age and she died at 20 months. She exhibited some of the symptoms of classical infantile galactosialidosis but no corneal clouding, cherry-red macular spot or limitation of joint mobility. Sonographic examination showed large kidneys and thickened cardiac septa, two symptoms as yet undescribed in this disorder. Urinary oligosaccharide analysis gave grossly pathological results and subsequent fibroblast enzyme analysis showed a deficiency of alpha-neuraminidase and beta-galactosidase. The patient's clinical features are compared with the few cases so far described in the liter…

Functional Adhesion of Pectin Biopolymers to the Lung Visceral Pleura

2021

Pleural injuries and the associated “air leak” are the most common complications after pulmonary surgery. Air leaks are the primary reason for prolonged chest tube use and increased hospital length of stay. Pectin, a plant-derived heteropolysaccharide, has been shown to be an air-tight sealant of pulmonary air leaks. Here, we investigate the morphologic and mechanical properties of pectin adhesion to the visceral pleural surface of the lung. After the application of high-methoxyl citrus pectin films to the murine lung, we used scanning electron microscopy to demonstrate intimate binding to the lung surface. To quantitatively assess pectin adhesion to the pleural surface, we used a custom ad…

2021

Bakalaura darba temats “Jaunākā skolas vecumposma bērnu pašvadītas macīšanās veicināšana āra nodarbībās” , darba autore Rūta Reimane, darba vadītāja Dr. paed. Ingūna Lāce. Bakalaura darba mērķis ir teorētiski analizēt un praktiski pārbaudīt skolēna pašvadītu mācīšanos āra nodarbībās nodrošinošus pedagoģiskos paņēmienus. Teorētiskajā daļā tiek analizēta pašvadītas mācīšanās un āra nodarbību jēdzieni, to būtība dažādu pedagogu un psihologu atziņās. Tiek analizēti pašvadītas mācīšanās ietekmējošie faktori jaunākā skolas vecumposma bērniem, nosacījumi tās veicināšanai, kā arī nepieciešamība tās veicināt āra nodarbībās. Pētījuma teorētiskā bāze balstās galvenokārt uz autoru G. Svence, L. Knope, …

The role ofSphagnummosses in the methane cycling of a boreal mire

2010

Peatlands are a major natural source of atmospheric methane (CH4). Emissions from Sphagnum-dominated mires are lower than those measured from other mire types. This observation may partly be due to methanotrophic (i.e., methane-consuming) bacteria associated with Sphagnum. Twenty-three of the 41 Sphagnum species in Finland can be found in the peatland at Lakkasuo. To better understand the Sphagnum-methanotroph system, we tested the following hypotheses: (1) all these Sphagnum species support methanotrophic bacteria; (2) water level is the key environmental determinant for differences in methanotrophy across habitats; (3) under dry conditions, Sphagnum species will not host methanotrophic ba…

Water-Dependent Blending of Pectin Films: The Mechanics of Conjoined Biopolymers

2020

Biodegradable pectin polymers have been recommended for a variety of biomedical applications, ranging from the delivery of oral drugs to the repair of injured visceral organs. A promising approach to regulate pectin biostability is the blending of pectin films. To investigate the development of conjoined films, we examined the physical properties of high-methoxyl pectin polymer-polymer (homopolymer) interactions at the adhesive interface. Pectin polymers were tested in glass phase (10&ndash

Mucopolysaccharidosis Type VII (Sly disease) survivors

2013

treatment. Onset of neurological symptoms at age 8 and in adolescence. Pair 4: L.M. died at age 5 months due to liver failure. P.M. (7 years): earlyinfantile form, despite treatment start at age 2 progressive neurological deterioration. Pair 5: R.K.: late-infantile form, untreated, died at age 9 due to progressive neurological involvement. M.K.: late infantileform, start of treatment at age 5, died at age 13 due to epileptic encephalopathy. These cases reveal that disease onset and progression in siblings with NPC vary, and that miglustat can slow disease progression.
