A Multi objective inventory model for short food supply chains

2017

Over the past 50 years, vertically integrated multinationals dominated global food markets by providing huge product diversity at low prices. Such systems are characterized by long supply chains capable of achieving high cost efficiencies resulting from the use of cheap raw materials, high chemical inputs, industrial shelf-life extension processes, economies of scale and mechanization. This dominant position on the market, however, has been achieved at a heavy cost on the global environment, generated by massive food wastage, and by a steady supply of fossil fuels. For such reasons, global supply chains are considered unsustainable and new food systems are being promoted in order to replace…

Influence of stress-level due to self-weight on the hydraulic conductivity of permeable concrete for geotechnical applications

2022

Permeable concrete is effectively used in many fields of civil and environmental engineering, including some geotechnical applications such as drainage piles, deep drainage trenches, and as a permeable backfill material for retaining walls. The principal requirements that a pervious concrete must have for geotechnical applications are those that simultaneously guarantee enough hydraulic conductivity and good filter properties against internal erosion of the soil in which the drains are realised. These requirements can be effectively achieved through special mix-designs in which a non-negligible amount of sand is added to the aggregates, unlike the permeable concretes used for example in the…

Are organizations committed to stress management interventions?

2020

Purpose – Work-related stress causes individual, societal and economic costs. Stress management interventions (SMIs) are implemented to decrease those costs, reduce the psychosocial harms and increase workers’ productivity. This article reports on a study of a substantial sample of enterprises to verify what types of SMIs they implemented and how they assessed the results of these interventions. Design/methodology/approach – Specially designed surveys were collected in 2015–2017 from 408 organizations of different sizes and sectors in Poland, including multinationals. The reliability of the questionnaire was satisfactory (Cr. 0.84). Findings – Results show that 59% of enterprises are aware …

Limited Resistance Rigid Perfectly Plastic Hinges for Steel Frames

2017

The paper concerns the proposal of a new special device for steel frames that can be utilized as external constraint as well as internal one connecting the structure beam elements. The device is designed as a rigid perfectly plastic hinge characterized by suitably chosen stiffness and resistance. Its constituting material is steel. The elastic stiffness and the limit resistance, treated as independent of each other, are fixed with the aim of satisfying special features required to the structure. The proposed device is thought as a sandwich section with wing thickness appropriately variable. Its dimensions are designed so that it can exhibit the fixed independent stiffness and limit resistan…

Physically based modeling of rainfall-triggered landslides: a case study in the Luquillo forest, Puerto Rico

2013

This paper presents the development of a rainfall-triggered landslide module within an existing physically based spatially distributed ecohydrologic model. The model, tRIBS-VEGGIE (Triangulated Irregular Networks-based Real-time Integrated Basin Simulator and Vegetation Generator for Interactive Evolution), is capable of a sophisticated description of many hydrological processes; in particular, the soil moisture dynamics are resolved at a temporal and spatial resolution required to examine the triggering mechanisms of rainfall-induced landslides. The validity of the tRIBS-VEGGIE model to a tropical environment is shown with an evaluation of its performance against direct observations made w…

Solving the Problems of Inspection Planning under Parametric Uncertainty of Underlying Models

2013

Certain fatigued structures must be inspected in order to detect fatigue damages that would otherwise not be apparent. A technique for obtaining optimal inspection strategies is proposed for situations where it is difficult to quantify the costs associated with inspections and undetected failure. For fatigued structures for which failures (fatigue damages) are only detected at the time of inspection, it is important to be able to determine the optimal times of inspection. Fewer inspections will lead to lower fatigue reliability of the structure upon demand, and frequent inspection will lead to higher cost. When there is a fatigue reliability requirement, the problem is usually to develop an…

Structural analysis of the back supporting structure of the DEMO WCLL outboard blanket

2017

Abstract Within the framework of EUROfusion R&D activities an intense research campaign has been carried out at the University of Palermo, in close cooperation with ENEA Brasimone, in order to investigate the thermo-mechanical performances of the outboard segment Back-Supporting Structure (BSS) of the DEMO Water-Cooled Lithium Lead breeding blanket (WCLL). In particular, the configuration of the outboard segment BSS, purposely set-up by the WCLL project team during 2015 according to the blanket “multi-module system” concept, has been taken into account in order to study its steady state thermo-mechanical behaviour, paying attention to the simulation of both modules-BSS and BSS-vacuum vessel…

An efficient framework for the elasto-plastic reliability assessment of uncertain wind excited systems

2016

Abstract In this paper a method to efficiently evaluate the reliability of elastic-perfectly plastic structures is proposed. The method is based on combining dynamic shakedown theory with Subset Simulation. In particular, focus is on describing the shakedown behavior of uncertain elasto-plastic systems driven by stochastic wind loads. The ability of the structure to shakedown is assumed as a limit state separating plastic collapse from a safe, if not elastic, state of the structure. The limit state is therefore evaluated in terms of a probabilistic load multiplier estimated through solving a series of linear programming problems posed in terms of the responses of the underlying linear elast…
