Saliva: Its value as a biological matrix and current methods of sampling

Saliva is a non-invasive medium, its analysis is useful to measure a wide range of hormones, drugs, narcotics, antibodies, host, microbial, fungal and viral DNA up to salivary mRNA; hence, it has been suggested to be an easy and reliable biomarker in disease diagnostics, such as inflammatory mouth infections/diseases, and in normal health surveillance. In light of this potential, our primary endpoint is to review the current knowledge on saliva analyses and its recent methods of sampling.

Yersinia enterocolitica and Yersinia pseudotuberculosis are important zoonotic bacteria causing human enteric yersiniosis commonly reported in Europe. All Y. pseudotuberculosis strains are considered pathogenic, while Y. enterocolitica include both pathogenic and nonpathogenic strains which can be divided into six biotypes (1A, 1B, and 2-5) and about 30 serotypes. The most common types causing yersiniosis in Europe are Y. enterocolitica bioserotypes 4/O:3 and 2/O:9. Imaging through scattering media by microstructured illumination

We describe a method to image objects through scattering media based on microstructured illumination. A spatial light modulator is used to project a set of microstructured light patterns onto the sample. The image is retrieved computationally from the photocurrent fluctuations provided by a detector with no spatial structure. We review several optical setups developed in the last years with different illumination strategies and applied to different turbid media. In particular we introduce a new non-invasive optical system based on a reflection configuration. In a competing risks setting, the cumulative incidence of an event of interest describes the absolute risk for this event as a function of time. For regression analysis, one can either choose to model all competing events by separate cause-specific hazard models or directly model the association between covariates and the cumulative incidence of one of the events. With a suitable link function, direct regression models allow for a straightforward interpretation of covariate effects on the cumulative incidence. To have the best prospects to make an impact in this process, a new study should be designed optimally taking into account the previous studies and other prior information. A Vastly Increased Chemical Variety of RNA Modifications Containing a Thioacetal Structure

International audience; Recently discovered new chemical entities in RNA modifications have involved surprising functional groups that enlarge the chemical space of RNA. Using LC-MS, we found over 100 signals of RNA constituents that contained a ribose moiety in tRNAs from E. coli. Feeding experiments with variegated stable isotope labeled compounds identified 37 compounds that are new structures of RNA modifications. Aim: A simple, rapid, economical and sensitive HPLC-UV method was developed for the simultaneous quantification of ceftolozane and tazobactam in plasma samples. Methodology: After deproteinization followed by a liquid–liquid back-extraction, the compounds were separated on a C18 column (150 mm × 4.6 mm, 5 μm) with UV-visible detection at 220 nm. The mobile phase consisted of acetonitrile and potassium dihydrogenphosphate buffer at pH 3.0 (8:92, v/v), delivered isocratically at a flow rate of 1.0 ml/min and at a column oven temperature of 30°C.
