Design of an efficient digital down-converter for a SDR-based DVB-S receiver

2007

This paper presents the design of an area-power efficient digital down-converter suitable for broadband communication systems. The DVB-S standard has been used as a design example. It has been shown that by selecting a bandpass sampling to generate only one spectral image, the case in which the relationship between the digital carrier frequency and the sampling frequency is 1/4, not only gives the smallest area but the lowest power consumption.

Consumer attitude toward using smart shopping carts: a comparative analysis of Italian and Croatian consumer attitudes

2016

This paper aims to explore consumer attitudes toward using smart shopping cart, considering country of origin, gender, age, and intentions to use smart shopping carts while purchasing. Moreover, it investigates the influence of extracted factors on consumers' attitudes toward using smart shopping carts and the users' levels of digital competence. The data was collected through survey questionnaires using a purposive sample of 313 Croatian and Italian respondents. To this end, we applied statistical methodologies such as binary logistic regression, factor analysis, and analysis of variance. We found that, compared with Croatians, Italian respondents have a more positive attitude toward using…

In vitro 30 nm silver nanoparticles promote chondrogenesis of human mesenchymal stem cells

2015

Silver nanoparticles (Ag NPs) are one of the most widely used products in nano-medicine due to their broad-spectrum antimicrobial activity. In tissue engineering, Ag NPs are often incorporated as antibacterial agents in scaffolds, which are subsequently loaded with human bone marrow-derived mesenchymal stem cells (hMSCs). In this study, we investigated the effect of Ag NPs on chondrogenesis of hMSCs. The synthesized Ag NPs were spherical in shape, with a mean diameter of ∼30 nm. After 24 h exposure, Ag NPs were taken up into hMSCs and mainly distributed in the cytoplasm, the nucleus and different sized vesicles. We examined the chondrogenesis through several methods, including glycosaminogl…

Efficacy of progressive aquatic resistance training for tibiofemoral cartilage in postmenopausal women with mild knee osteoarthritis : a randomised c…

2016

Objective: To study the efficacy of aquatic resistance training on biochemical composition of tibiofemoral cartilage in postmenopausal women with mild knee osteoarthritis (OA). Design: Eighty seven volunteer postmenopausal women, aged 60-68 years, with mild knee OA (Kellgren-Lawrence grades I/II and knee pain) were recruited and randomly assigned to an intervention (n = 43) and control (n = 44) group. The intervention group participated in 48 supervised aquatic resistance training sessions over 16 weeks while the control group maintained usual level of physical activity. The biochemical composition of the medial and lateral tibiofemoral cartilage was estimated using single-slice transverse …

Dose Responsive Effects of Subcutaneous Pentosan Polysulfate Injection in Mucopolysaccharidosis Type VI Rats and Comparison to Oral Treatment

2014

Background We previously demonstrated the benefits of daily, oral pentosan polysulfate (PPS) treatment in a rat model of mucopolysaccharidosis (MPS) type VI. Herein we compare these effects to once weekly, subcutaneous (s.c.) injection. The bioavailability of injected PPS is greater than oral, suggesting better delivery to difficult tissues such as bone and cartilage. Injected PPS also effectively treats osteoarthritis in animals, and has shown success in osteoarthritis patients. Methodology/principal findings One-month-old MPS VI rats were given once weekly s.c. injections of PPS (1, 2 and 4 mg/kg, human equivalent dose (HED)), or daily oral PPS (4 mg/kg HED) for 6 months. Serum inflammato…

Physical Activity Is Related with Cartilage Quality in Women with Knee Osteoarthritis

2017

Purpose To study the relationship between 12-month leisure-time physical activity (LTPA) level and changes in estimated biochemical composition of tibiofemoral cartilage in postmenopausal women with mild knee osteoarthritis (OA). Methods Originally, 87 volunteer postmenopausal women, age 60 to 68 yr, with mild knee OA (Kellgren Lawrence I/II and knee pain) participated in a randomized controlled, 4-month aquatic training trial (RCT), after which 76 completed the 12-month postintervention follow-up period. Self-reported LTPA was collected along the 12-month period using a diary from which MET task hours per month were calculated. Participants were divided into MET task hour tertiles: 1, lowe…

Toxicity and mode of action of Bacillus thuringiensis Cry proteins in the Mediterranean corn borer, Sesamia nonagrioides (Lefebvre)

2006

ABSTRACT Sesamia nonagrioides is one of the most damaging pests of corn in Spain and other Mediterranean countries. Bt corn expressing the Bacillus thuringiensis Cry1Ab toxin is being grown on about 58,000 ha in Spain. Here we studied the mode of action of this Cry protein on S. nonagrioides (binding to specific receptors, stability of binding, and pore formation) and the modes of action of other Cry proteins that were found to be active in this work (Cry1Ac, Cry1Ca, and Cry1Fa). Binding assays were performed with 125 I- or biotin-labeled toxins and larval brush border membrane vesicles (BBMV). Competition experiments indicated that these toxins bind specifically and that Cry1Aa, Cry1Ab, an…

Uridine enhances the cytotoxic effect of D-glucosamine in rat C6 glioma cells.

1986

This paper studies the influence of uridine on the effects exerted by D-glucosamine in rat C6 glioma cells. 2 mM uridine increased markedly both the cytotoxic effect of the aminosugar and the inhibition of thymidine incorporation into acid-insoluble fraction. Furthermore the complete resumption of the capacity to incorporate either 3H-thymidine or 3H-mannose which was observed after the removal of the aminosugar, was impeded when the cells were treated contemporaneously with D-glucosamine and uridine. An exposure for 4 hr to 20 mM glucosamine alone enhanced about 15-fold the cellular pool of UDP-N-acetylhexosamines; the addition of 2 mM uridine intensified the expansion of this pool, which …
