Electrical connections and driving electronics for piezo-actuated x-ray thin glass optics

2016

Use of thin glass modular optics is a technology currently under study to build light, low cost, large area X-ray telescopes for high energy astrophysics space missions. The angular resolution of such telescopes is limited by local deviations from the ideal shape of the mirrors. One possible strategy to improve it consists in actively correcting the mirror profile by gluing thin ceramic piezo-electric actuators on the back of the glasses. A large number of actuators, however, requires several electrical connections to drive them with the different needed voltages. We have developed a process for depositing conductive paths directly on the back of non-planar thin foil mirrors by means of a p…

Heteroepitaxial growth of Co on W(110) investigated by scanning tunneling microscopy

2003

We investigated the growth of Co submonolayers on bcc W(110) by scanning tunneling microscopy. Due to the strong Co-W bonding, monolayers of Co grow in equilibrium pseudomorphically on W(110) until the monolayer is almost completed. When excess atoms are deposited atop the pseudomorphic monolayer, it transforms to a close-packed (cp) monolayer with misfit dislocation lines parallel to $[11\ifmmode\bar\else\textasciimacron\fi{}0]$ (Nishiyama-Wassermann orientation). The structure of the cp monolayer, as concluded from atomically resolved STM images, deviates from the rigid hard-sphere model of a cp (111) layer. Details of the structure are compared to a structure model previously proposed by…

Does mechanical locking-base ceramic brackets reduce cracks at debonding?

2012

Objectives: Debonding of chemically bonded ceramic brackets has been mostly led to enamel damages. This study aimed to evaluate enamel cracks followed by debonding ceramic brackets with mechanical retention. Study Design: Sixty extracted human premolar teeth were randomly divided into two groups. Metallic brackets and recently available ceramic brackets with mechanical retention were bonded to the teeth in first (MB) and second (CB) group respectively. After a week, the brackets were debonded using a pair of bracket-removing pliers assembled to a testing machine. Optical stereomicroscope and trans-illumination techniques were used to calculate the cracks and measure their length before bond…

Surface properties of AlInGaN/GaN heterostructure

2016

Abstract Surface structural, electronic and electrical properties of the quaternary alloy AlInGaN/GaN heterostructures are investigated. Surface termination, atomic arrangement, electronic and electrical properties of the (0001) surface and (10–11) V-defect facets have been experimentally analyzed using various surface sensitive techniques including spectroscopy and microscopy. Moreover, the effect of sub-band gap (of the barrier layer) illumination on contact potential difference (VCPD) and the role of oxygen chemisorption have been studied.

An epitaxial hexagonal tungsten bronze as precursor for WO3 nanorods on mica.

2008

International audience; Tungsten oxide nanorods are grown at atmospheric pressure and low temperature (360 1C), by sublimation of WO3 and condensation on mica substrates. The nanorods are characterized by atomic force microscopy, high-resolution electron microscopy, energy-dispersive X-ray spectroscopy and high energy electron diffraction. The experimental results evidence the formation of a hexagonal tungsten bronze at the nanorod–substrate interface. The epitaxial relationships of the nanorods on mica are determined and the role of epitaxial orientation of the interfacial bronze in the nanorod growth and morphology are discussed.

Outline and arrangement of enamel rods in human deciduous and permanent enamel. 3D-reconstructions obtained from CLSM and SEM images based on serial …

2001

Human enamel rods were made visible continuously from the dentino-enamel junction (DEJ) up to the enamel surface. From 12 teeth (1st and 2nd dentition) enamel blocks from the cervical third were prepared with perpendicular planes, embedded in resin, and ground down in steps of 15 microm parallel to the enamel surface. Enamel rods were made visible by acid etching (35% H3PO4, 45 s), sputtered and examined in the scanning electron microscope (SEM). Prior to this, the enamel blocks were viewed under the CLSM and optical sections at distances of 2 microm were obtained, starting in the same plane as the grinding surface. The outlines of the rods were digitized and reconstructed three dimensional…

A New Method for Direct Detection of Heparin on Surface-Modified Intraocular Lenses

1997

Background: Examination of surface-bound heparin on synthetic polymers can only be performed by few staining methods. These methods are limited by an only approximate detection of heparin visible at high magnification. Other methods only measure heparin quantitatively (per square dimension) and are rather sensitive to artifacts. Due to its homogeneous staining pattern, the modified toluidine blue staining technique, using a non-protein-based substance, allows examination and analysis of the homogeneity of the monomolecular heparin layer even under critical conditions like scanning electron microscopy. Materials and Methods: For critical examination of the heparin layer, this method was used…

Novel Functionality of Lithium-Impregnated Titania as Nanocatalyst

2019

The present work incorporates the synthesis of a multifunctional catalyst for the transesterification of waste cooking oil (WCO) to biodiesel and recovery of rare earth elements (REEs). For this purpose, TiO2 nanoparticles and TiO2 doped with lithium ions were prepared. The influence of lithium ions on the catalytic performance of TiO2 was attained by impregnation of the different molar ratios of lithium hydroxide to bare TiO2. Then each catalyst was screened for catalytic conversion of WCO to fatty acid methyl ester (FAME) and also for REEs recovery. All synthesized materials were characterized using scanning electron microscopy (SEM), X-ray diffraction (XRD), Transmission electron microsc…
