In vitro response of two Sicilian genotypes of Morus (L.) through axillary bud culture.
2007
A protocol for the in vitro establishment of two Sicilian genotypes of mulberry has been set up. Multiple shoots were initiated and plantlets were produced from buds collected from mature trees of Morus alba L. and Morus nigra L., grown in the field. The influence of two explanting times (September and December) of buds on the in vitro response has been observed. The percentage of sprouting after four weeks of culture was greatly higher with material explanted from the field in September compared with the one collected in December. Morus nigra L. produced more vigorous shoots than Morus alba L.. After the second subculture the number of shoots produced decreased, in both genotypes. No diffe…
Micropropagation of Globe Artichoke (Cynara cardunculus L. var. scolymus).
2013
The globe artichoke (Cynara cardunculus L. var. scolymus) is a perennial plant cultivated in the Mediterranean region and the Americas for its edible young flower heads. Although vegetative propagation by offshoots or by “ovoli” (underground dormant axillary buds) has been the primary method of propagation, the potential for the diffusion of diseases and the phenotypic variability can be very high. The propagation of this species by axillary shoot proliferation from in vitro cultured meristems produces systemic pathogen free plants and a higher multiplication rate as compared to that obtained by conventional agamic multiplication. Axillary shoot proliferation can be induced from excised sho…
High performance composites containing perfluoropolyethers-functionalized carbon-based nanoparticles: Rheological behavior and wettability
2016
Abstract Ultra High Molecular Weight Polyethylene (UHMWPE) based composites filled with carbon nanotubes (CNTs) and carbon black (CB) modified by perfluoropolyethers (PFPE) have been formulated. All composites show a segregated morphology with nanofillers selectively localized at the polymer particle–particle interface. The composites rheological properties have been deeply investigated: the PFPE functionalities linked on CNTs facilitate the semi-3D nanofillers network formation in the composites that show a solid-like behaviour even at lower investigated filler contents, reaching the rheological percolation threshold at lower nanofiller content than bare CNTs filled composites. For composi…

Design optimisation of a funnel-shaped floating dock for installation of offshore wind turbines
2020
Master's thesis in Civil and structural engineering (BYG508) Offshore wind power is a rapidly growing renewable energy industry and has a tremendous potentialof further expansion. Installation of offshore wind turbines is a challenging task. Floating windturbines are believed to be cost-effective solutions for deep water installation. This technologyis extremely sensitive to wave excitation during the installation process. As deep-water windfarms often are located in areas exposed to rough weather, innovative methods of installation areinvestigated. The floating dock concept has been proposed in recent studies in order to expand theweather window for installing spar floating wind turbines. …
Design and Analysis of a Novel Semi-submersible Floater Supporting a 5MW Wind Turbine
2021
Master's thesis in Civil and structural engineering (BYG508) The wind industry has been rapidly evolving in recent years, moving from onshore to offshorelocations. For deep waters, floating wind turbines are more cost-effective than bottom-fixed ones, and semi-submersible floating wind turbines are especially advantageous compared to other con-cepts because of their relatively small draft and good towability for installation. This masterthesis focuses on preliminary design and analysis of a novel semi-submersible floating wind turbinesupported by a twin fish floater and positioned by a single-point mooring system. Hydrostaticand hydrodynamic analysis are first carried out to select a floater…
Quantitative Cerebral Blood Flow Mapping in Stroke and During Mental Stimulation After Intravenous Injection of 195mAu
1985
The new short life isotope 195mAu has some suitable features for quantitative cerebral blood flow mapping. Its half-life is 30.5 s; therefore an injection can be repeated after 3 min (six half-lives) without any need for background subtraction and with the same specific activity. The calculated whole body radiation dose after three successive administrations of 25 mCi 195mAu amounts to 50 mrad. In comparison to a 99mTc pertechnetate injection it is estimated that the dose to the patients is reduced by a factor of eight (Garcia et al. 1981).
CUSHAW2-GPU: Empowering Faster Gapped Short-Read Alignment Using GPU Computing
2014
We present CUSHAW2-GPU to accelerate the CUSHAW2 algorithm using compute unified device architecture (CUDA)-enabled GPUs. Two critical GPU computing techniques, namely intertask hybrid CPU-GPU parallelism and tile-based Smith-Waterman map backtracking using CUDA, are investigated to facilitate fast alignments. By aligning both simulated and real reads to the human genome, our aligner yields comparable or better performance compared to BWA-SW, Bowtie2, and GEM. Furthermore, CUSHAW2-GPU with a Tesla K20c GPU achieves significant speedups over the multithreaded CUSHAW2, BWA-SW, Bowtie2, and GEM on the 12 cores of a high-end CPU for both single-end and paired-end alignment.
Re: The Clinical Impact of Bacteremia on Outcomes in Elderly Patients with Pyelonephritis or Urinary Sepsis: A Prospective Multicenter Study
2018
Background Bacteremia is common in severe urinary infections, but its influence on the outcomes is not well established. The aim of this study was to assess the association of bacteremia with outcomes in elderly patients admitted to hospital with pyelonephritis or urinary sepsis. Methods This prospective muticenter observational study was conducted at 5 Spanish hospitals. All patients aged >65 years with pyelonephritis or urinary sepsis admitted to the departments of internal medicine and with urine and blood cultures obtained at admission to hospital were eligible. Transfer to ICU, length of hospital stay, hospital mortality and all cause 30-day mortality in bacteremic and non-bacteremic g…
