How do Finnish and Chinese students’ diverse pedagogical experiences shape feedback interpretation?

2023

Due to the dissemination of joint degree programmes in higher education, more students from different educational backgrounds are exposed to the same teaching and assessment without sharing a common pedagogical culture. Since this is relatively new in Finland, little is known about how students with diverse backgrounds experience assessment compared to their Finnish classmates and how this affects their overall performance. Having as a starting point an English for Specific Purposes course offered in Finland and China, this qualitative study focuses on the role of feedback through seventeen in-depth interviews. Themes such as grades and peer feedback were interpreted based on the educationa…

Disciplīnas problēmu prevencija pēc demokrātiskās pieejas klases vadības modeļa sākumskolā 1. klasē

2021

The complexity of knowledge construction in a classroom setting

2018

International audience; We study a class of mathematics education MA students in an introductory course on Chaos and Fractals, as they grapple with the Sierpinksi triangle, and in particular with the apparent paradox that its area equals 0, while its perimeter is infinitely long. For this purpose, we network an approach for investigating the construction of knowledge in small groups with one for examining how ideas and ways of reasoning function-as-if-shared in a classroom. Our results show complexities: (i) small group work and whole class discussions mutually influence each other; (ii) ideas may function-as-if-shared in the whole class even if the majority of students have not previously …

La flipped classroom come strumento di inclusione

2017

The researc…

METODES RUNĀŠANAS TRAUKSMES MAZINĀŠANAI RUNĀJOT ANGĻU VALODAS STUNDĀS SĀKUMSKOLĀ

2022

Interpreting and managing a monolingual norm in an English-speaking class in Finland: When first and second graders contest the norm

2011

This study explores the stances that multilingual learners adopt in the face of a monolingual, “English-only” norm in a primary English medium class in Finland. I examine classroom interaction focusing on three students and the ways in which they reinterpret, reformulate, and contest this norm. This research is informed by the perspective of language socialization and draws on methods of microethnographic discourse analysis. I find that the three focal students come into opposition when they interpret and manage the institutional monolingual norm differently, indexing issues of mother tongue expertise and group membership. Aleksi employs a variety of discursive practices in resisting the En…

VIRTUAL CLASSROOM: TEACHER SKILLS TO PROMOTE STUDENT ENGAGEMENT

2018

The Virtual Classroom is the main tool for blended learning, since it allows the breaking of time and space barriers between the teacher and the student. In order to develop and put into practice a higher studies course through this tool, teachers need to have a series of skills related to the command of digital technologies and an understanding of students’ affective and behavioral states: and to then apply appropriate communication strategies to deliver course content and prepare students for this innovative learning approach. This study reviews educational research literature on virtual classrooms, teacher behavior and student engagement to establish a theoretical model that explains the…
