Model-Based Dose Calculation Algorithms for Brachytherapy Dosimetry

2019

The purpose of this study was to review the limitations of dose calculation formalisms for photon-emitting brachytherapy sources based on the American Association of Physicists in Medicine (AAPM) Task Group No. 43 (TG-43) report and to provide recommendations to transition to model-based dose calculation algorithms. Additionally, an overview of these algorithms and approaches is presented. The influence of tissue and seed/applicator heterogeneities on brachytherapy dose distributions for breast, gynecologic, head and neck, rectum, and prostate cancers as well as eye plaques and electronic brachytherapy treatments were investigated by comparing dose calculations based on the TG-43 formalism …

USE OF FUZZY NEURAL NETWORKS IN MODELING RELATIONSHIPS OF HPV INFECTION WITH APOPTOTIC AND PROLIFERATION MARKERS IN POTENTIALLY MALIGNANT ORAL LESIONS

2005

To evaluate in oral leukoplakia the relationship between HPV infection and markers of apoptosis (bcl-2, survivin) and proliferation (PCNA), also conditionally to age, gender, smoking and drinking habits of patients, by means of Fuzzy neural networks (FNN) system 21 cases of oral leukopakia, clinically and histologically diagnosed, were examined for HPV DNA presence, bcl-2, survivin and PCNA expression. HPV DNA was investigated in exfoliated oral mucosa cells by nested PCR (nPCR: MY09-MY11/GP5-GP6), and the HPV genotype determined by direct DNA sequencing. All markers were investigated by means of standardised immunohistochemistry procedure. Data were analysed by chi-square test, crude OR an…

Methylation profile in tumor and sputum samples of lung cancer patients detected by spiral computed tomography: A nested case-control study

2005

We evaluated the aberrant promoter methylation profile of a panel of 3 genes in DNA from tumor and sputum samples, in view of a complementary approach to spiral computed tomography (CT) for early diagnosis of lung cancer. The aberrant promoter methylation of RARbeta2, p16(INK4A) and RASSF1A genes was evaluated by methylation-specific PCR in tumor samples of 29 CT-detected lung cancer patients, of which 18 had tumor-sputum pairs available for the analysis, and in the sputum samples from 112 cancer-free heavy smokers enrolled in a spiral CT trial. In tumor samples from 29 spiral CT-detected patients, promoter hypermethylation was identified in 19/29 (65.5%) cases for RARbeta2, 12/29 (41.4%) f…

Thoracoscopy in pleural effusion –two techniques: awake single-access video-assisted thoracic surgery versus 2-ports video-assisted thoracic surgery …

2015

Awake single access video-assisted thoracic surgery with local anesthesia improves procedure tolerance, reduces postoperative stay and costs. Materials & methods: Local anesthesia was made with lidocaine and ropivacaine. We realize one 20 mm incision for the 'single-access', and two incisions for the '2-trocars technique'. Results: Mortality rate was 0% in both groups. Postoperative stay: 3dd ± 4 versus 4dd ± 5, mean operative time: 39 min versus 37 min (p < 0.05). Chest tube duration: 2dd ± 5 versus 3dd ± 6. Complications: 11/95 versus 10/79. Conclusion: Awake technique reduce postoperative hospital stay and chest drainage duration, similar complications and recurrence rate. The authors ca…

Characterization of oscillatory changes in hippocampus and amygdala after deep brain stimulation of the infralimbic prefrontal cortex

2016

Deep brain stimulation (DBS) is a new investigational therapy that has generated positive results in refractory depression. Although the neurochemical and behavioral effects of DBS have been examined, less attention has been paid to the influence of DBS on the network dynamics between different brain areas, which could contribute to its therapeutic effects. Herein, we set out to identify the effects of 1 h DBS in the infralimbic cortex (IL) on the oscillatory network dynamics between hippocampus and basolateral amygdala (BLA), two regions implicated in depression and its treatment. Urethane-anesthetized rats with bilaterally implanted electrodes in the IL were exposed to 1 h constant stimul…

Perfusion of surgical cavity wall enhancement in early post-treatment MR imaging may stratify the time-to-progression in glioblastoma

2017

Objective To determine if perfusion in surgical cavity wall enhancement (SCWE) obtained in early post-treatment MR imaging can stratify time-to-progression (TTP) in glioblastoma. Materials and methods This study enrolled 60 glioblastoma patients with more than 5-mm-thick SCWEs as detected on contrast-enhanced MR imaging after concurrent chemoradiation therapy. Two independent readers categorized the shape and perfusion state of SCWEs as nodular or non-nodular and as having positive or negative perfusion compared with the contralateral grey matter on arterial spin labeling (ASL). The perfusion fraction on ASL within the contrast-enhancing lesion was calculated. The independent predictability…

Workflow-centred open-source fully automated lung volumetry in chest CT

2019

Aim To develop a robust open-source method for fully automated extraction of total lung capacity (TLC) from computed tomography (CT) images and to demonstrate its integration into the clinical workflow. Materials and methods Using only open-source software, an algorithm was developed based on a region-growing method that does not require manual interaction. Lung volumes calculated from reconstructions with different kernels (TLCCT) were assessed. To validate the algorithm calculations, the results were correlated to TLC measured by pulmonary function testing (TLCPFT) in a subgroup of patients for which this information was available within 3 days of the CT examination. Results A total of 28…

EEG-related Functional MRI in Benign Childhood Epilepsy with Centrotemporal Spikes

2003

The localization of epileptic foci is an important issue in children with extratemporal epilepsies. However, the value of noninvasive methods such as the EEG-assisted functional magnetic resonance imaging (fMRI) has not been sufficiently investigated in children. As a model of extratemporal epilepsies, we studied 7 patients aged 5 to 12 (median 10) years with benign childhood epilepsy and centrotemporal (rolandic) spikes. Interictal spikes were recorded during the fMRI acquisition on a MR-compatible battery-powered digital EEG system with 16 channels. The fMRI sequences were correlated off-line with the EEG spikes and analyzed with the software Statistical Parametrical Mapping SPM99. The fM…

A computer-based Pinyin intervention for disadvantaged children in China: Effects on Pinyin skills, phonological awareness, and character reading.

2019

Pinyin is an alphabetic script that denotes pronunciations of Chinese characters. Studies have shown that Pinyin instruction enhances both phonological awareness (e.g., Shu et al., Developmental Science, 2008, 11, 171-181) and character reading (e.g., Lin et al., Psychological Science, 2010, 21, 1117-1122) in Chinese children. In the present study, we provided a 3-week Pinyin intervention with a computer-based Pinyin GraphoGame to disadvantaged migrant children with poor Pinyin skills. A total of 252 first graders who were children of migrant workers in a large Chinese city were assessed to identify poor Pinyin readers. Fifty-six 7-year-old children with poor Pinyin skills were selected and…
