Deep Learning Network for Segmentation of the Prostate Gland With Median Lobe Enlargement in T2-weighted MR Images: Comparison With Manual Segmentati…
2021
Purpose: Aim of this study was to evaluate a fully automated deep learning network named Efficient Neural Network (ENet) for segmentation of prostate gland with median lobe enlargement compared to manual segmentation. Materials and Methods: One-hundred-three patients with median lobe enlargement on prostate MRI were retrospectively included. Ellipsoid formula, manual segmentation and automatic segmentation were used for prostate volume estimation using T2 weighted MRI images. ENet was used for automatic segmentation; it is a deep learning network developed for fast inference and high accuracy in augmented reality and automotive scenarios. Student t-test was performed to compare prostate vol…
Proteomic Analysis of Protein Components in Periodontal Ligament Fibroblasts
2005
BACKGROUND: Characterization of periodontal ligament (PDL) fibroblast proteome is an important tool for understanding PDL physiology and regulation and for identifying disease-related protein markers. PDL fibroblast protein expression has been studied using immunological methods, although limited to previously identified proteins for which specific antibodies are available. METHODS: We applied proteomic analysis coupled with mass spectrometry and database knowledge to human PDL fibroblasts. RESULTS: We detected 900 spots and identified 117 protein spots originating in 74 different genes. In addition to scaffold cytoskeletal proteins, e.g., actin, tubulin, and vimentin, we identified protein…
Computer game as a tool for training the identification of phonemic length.
2013
Computer-assisted training of Finnish phonemic length was conducted with 7-year-old Russian-speaking second-language learners of Finnish. Phonemic length plays a different role in these two languages. The training included game activities with two- and three-syllable word and pseudo-word minimal pairs with prototypical vowel durations. The lowest accuracy scores were recorded for two-syllable words. Accuracy scores were higher for the minimal pairs with larger rather than smaller differences in duration. Accuracy scores were lower for long duration than for short duration. The ability to identify quantity degree was generalized to stimuli used in the identification test in two of the childr…
Bilingualism at the core of the brain. Structural differences between bilinguals and monolinguals revealed by subcortical shape analysis.
2015
Naturally acquiring a language shapes the human brain through a long-lasting learning and practice process. This is supported by previous studies showing that managing more than one language from early childhood has an impact on brain structure and function. However, to what extent bilingual individuals present neuroanatomical peculiarities at the subcortical level with respect to monolinguals is yet not well understood, despite the key role of subcortical gray matter for a number of language functions, including monitoring of speech production and language control — two processes especially solicited by bilinguals. Here we addressed this issue by performing a subcortical surface-based anal…
Computer-aided diagnosis system for characterizing ISUP grade≥2 prostate cancers at multiparametric MRI: A cross-vendor evaluation.
2019
International audience; Purpose: To assess the performance of a computer-aided diagnosis (CADx) system trained at characterizing International Society of Urological Pathology (ISUP) grade >= 2 peripheral zone (PZ) prostate cancers on multiparametric magnetic resonance imaging (mpMRI) examinations from a different institution and acquired on different scanners than those used for the training database.Patients and methods: Preoperative mpMRIs of 74 men (median age, 65.7 years) treated by prostatectomy between 2014 and 2017 were retrospectively selected. One radiologist outlined suspicious lesions and scored them using Prostate Imaging-Reporting and Data System version 2 (PI-RADSv2); their CA…
Automatic classification of tissues on pelvic MRI based on relaxation times and support vector machine
2019
International audience; Tissue segmentation and classification in MRI is a challenging task due to a lack of signal intensity standardization. MRI signal is dependent on the acquisition protocol, the coil profile, the scanner type, etc. While we can compute quantitative physical tissue properties independent of the hardware and the sequence parameters, it is still difficult to leverage these physical properties to segment and classify pelvic tissues. The proposed method integrates quantitative MRI values (T1 and T2 relaxation times and pure synthetic weighted images) and machine learning (Support Vector Machine (SVM)) to segment and classify tissues in the pelvic region, i.e.: fat, muscle, …
PERIPHERAL SURFACE DOSE FROM A LINEAR ACCELERATOR: RADIOCHROMIC FILM EXPERIMENTAL MEASUREMENTS OF FLATTENING FILTER FREE VERSUS FLATTENED BEAMS
2020
Abstract There is a growing interest in the use of flattening filter free (FFF) beams due to the shorter treatment times. The reduction of head scatter suggests a better radiation protection to radiotherapy patients, considering the expected decrease in peripheral surface dose (PSD). In this work, PSD of flattened (FF) and FFF-photon beams was compared. A radiochromic film calibration method to reduce energy dependence was used. PSD was measured at distances from 2 to 50 cm to the field border for different square field sizes, modifying relevant clinical parameters. Also, clinical breast and prostate stereotactic body radiotherapy (SBRT) plans were studied. For square beams, FFF PSD is lowe…
Changes in disease burden in Poland between 1990-2017 in comparison with other Central European countries: A systematic analysis for the Global Burde…
2020
Background Systematic collection of mortality/morbidity data over time is crucial for monitoring trends in population health, developing health policies, assessing the impact of health programs. In Poland, a comprehensive analysis describing trends in disease burden for major conditions has never been published. The Global Burden of Diseases, Injuries, and Risk Factors Study (GBD) provides data on the burden of over 300 diseases in 195 countries since 1990. We used the GBD database to undertake an assessment of disease burden in Poland, evaluate changes in population health between 1990–2017, and compare Poland with other Central European (CE) countries. Methods The results of GBD 2017 for …
Cost effectiveness of boceprevir or telaprevir for previously treated patients with genotype 1 chronic hepatitis C.
2013
Background & Aims Randomised controlled trials (RCTs) show that triple therapy (TT) with peginterferon alfa, ribavirin, and boceprevir (BOC) or telaprevir (TVR) is more effective than peginterferon-ribavirin dual therapy (DT) in the treatment of genotype 1 (G1) chronic hepatitis C (CHC) patients with previous relapse (RR), partial response (PAR), and null-response (NR). We assess the cost-effectiveness of TT compared to no therapy in the treatment of patients previously treated with G1 CHC. Methods The available published literature provided the data source. The target population was made up of previously treated Caucasian patients with G1 CHC and these were evaluated over a lifetime horizo…
Evaluation of the xerostomia, taste and smell impairments after Covid-19
2021
Background The purpose of this study was to explore the effects of coronavirus disease 19 (Covid-19) on the oral cavity by evaluating the oral findings in the patients who recovered after treatment. Material and Methods This study involved confirmed Covid-19 patients whose treatment completed at least two weeks ago. A questionnaire consist of eight parts was applied to explore the oral findings after Covid-19. Also stimulated salivary flow rate was evaluated with a salivary flow test. Results 177 patients reached and 107 of them participate in the study. Regarding gender significant differences were found in terms of the presence of taste impairment after treatment (p=0.007), the degree of …
