A multi-technique characterisation of cronstedtite synthetized by iron-clay interaction in a step by step cooling procedure

International audience; The cooling of steel containers in radioactive-waste storage was simulated in a step-by-step experiment from 90 to 40 degrees C. Among newly formed clay minerals observed in run products, cronstedtite was identified by a number of analytical techniques (powder X-ray diffraction, transmission electron microscopy, and scanning electron microscopy). Cronstedtite has not previously been recognized to be so abundant and so well crystallized in an iron-clay interaction experiment. Healing of soft tissue trauma and bone discontinuities following implantation involves acute inflammatory reactions and the formation of blood vessels (angiogenesis). During angiogenesis new capillary vessels arise from the existing vasculature. Endothelial cells (EC) are the major cell type involved in angiogenesis. Corrosion of orthopaedic metallic implant materials (e.g. CoCr alloys) can cause locally high concentrations of heavy metal ions in the peri-implant tissues. Effects of endodontic treatment on apparent Young’s modulus of human teeth: in vitro study using speckle interferometry

The introduction of new techniques for endodontic procedures requires the analysis of the biomechanical behavior of dental structures. Digital speckle shearing pattern interferometry (DSSPI) is a nondestructive optical measuring technique that allows one to directly quantify deformations in teeth that are subjected to stress. Study of smartphone suitability for mapping of skin chromophores.

RGB (red-green-blue) technique for mapping skin chromophores by smartphones is proposed and studied. Three smartphones of different manufacturers were tested on skin phantoms and in vivo on benign skin lesions using a specially designed light source for illumination. Hemoglobin and melanin indices obtained by these smartphones showed differences in both tests. In vitro tests showed an increment of hemoglobin and melanin indices with the concentration of chromophores in phantoms. In vivo tests indicated higher hemoglobin index in hemangiomas than in nevi and healthy skin, and nevi showed higher melanin index compared to the healthy skin. Heterogeneous photo-assisted catalytic hydration/dehydration reactions based on Keggin and Wells-Dawson type heteropolytungstates

Polyoxometalates (POMs) are a wide class of metal-oxygen clusters that can be applied in acid and oxidation catalysis, medicine, electrochemistry, materials design, or models for self-assembling nanoscale systems as long as green and cheap photocatalysts. Heteropolyacids (HPAs) are a POM subclass extensively used as homogeneous photocatalysts for the oxidation of organic substrates. Dispersing HPAs onto solid supports with a high surface area increases their specific surface area and hence (photo)catalytic activity. This chapter reports the use of selected HPAs, heteropolytungstates, immobilized on different supports as heterogeneous photocatalysts.

Delamination of 2D coordination polymers : the role of solvent and ultrasound

Two novel cadmium-based 2D coordination polymers have been synthesized and characterized. Experimental results evidence that the best delamination processes occurs when weak interactions dominate the cohesion between layers and solvent molecules are occluded within the crystalline network. In this case, the delamination of the crystals occurs spontaneously in water. Response charactterization of ammonium tartrate solid state pellets for ESR dosimetry with radiotherapeutic photon and electron beams.

Solid state pellets (1 mm thick) for electron spin resonance (ESR) dosimetry were made using ammonium tartrate as the radiation-sensitive substance. Their behaviour was experimentally investigated as a function of dose with 60Co gamma rays. The calibration function obtained permits measurements of absorbed dose in the 2-50 Gy range, with a combined uncertainty of +/-4%. The lowest detectable dose was about 0.5 Gy. These properties are comparable with or even better than those of ESR dosimeters made from other materials. The time stability of the ESR signal of ammonium tartrate dosimeters at different storage conditions after irradiation was studied. A rather complex behaviour was observed, …

One pot microwave assisted synthesis of bisphosphonate alkene capped gold nanoparticles

International audience; A new synthetic pathway for the direct synthesis of water soluble gold nanoparticles (GNPs) already possessing terminal alkene functional groups was developed. This is achieved by using synthesized (1-hydroxy-1-phosphonopent-4-enyl)phosphonic acid (HMBPene), presenting advantages of the well known bisphosphonate coating applied to colloidal gold instead of metal oxides.
