Coordinative Binding of Polymers to Metal-Organic Framework Nanoparticles for Control of Interactions at the Biointerface

2019

Metal-organic framework nanoparticles (MOF NPs) are of growing interest in diagnostic and therapeutic applications, and due to their hybrid nature, they display enhanced properties compared to more established nanomaterials. The effective application of MOF NPs, however, is often hampered by limited control of their surface chemistry and understanding of their interactions at the biointerface. Using a surface coating approach, we found that coordinative polymer binding to Zr- fum NPs is a convenient way for peripheral surface functionalization. Different polymers with biomedical relevance were assessed for the ability to bind to the MOF surface. Carboxylic acid and amine containing polymers…

Use of PP-g-OXA in the Compatibilization of PP/LCP Blends

1999

Abstract Adding small amounts of liquid crystalline polymers (LCP) to flexible thermoplastic matrices (FTP) allows to enhance the mechanical and thermomechanical properties. Therefore it is possible to obtain materials with new properties only by simple mixing. A strong shortcoming is the incompatibility between LCP and FTP that leads to materials with very poor properties unusable for commercial pourposes. The presence of a compatibilizer is therefore required. Oxazoline functionality is known to be highly reactive toward many other functional groups and then oxazoline functionalized polymers can be efficiently used as compatibilizer precursors. In this work the compatibilizazion of polypr…

Chapter 8 Native and Bonded Silicas in Aqueous Sec

1988

Publisher Summary This chapter deals with the properties of packings and columns in correlation to chromatographic separations in size exclusion chromatography (SEC) and provides guidelines for optimum support design. The chapter provides a survey of the current state-of-the-art with respect to the surface modification of silica for SEC packings in aqueous eluents. The properties of commercial packings and columns are listed and compared. An advice is also discussed on the operation and maintenance of columns with a view to achieving high resolution and long life-time. In SEC, solute elution is based on equilibrium, entropy-controlled size exclusion process. According to their size, the so…

Comparison between different surface treatment methods on shear bond strength of zirconia (in vitro study)

2020

Background To compare the effect of Er:YAG Laser and Air particle abrasion (APA) surface treatments on shear bond strength of Y-TZP to composite resin cuboids in the presence and absence of primer application and salivary contamination. Material and methods Seventy-two cuboidal shaped specimens 7x7x3 were prepared from Y-TZP using CADCAM, cleaned and sintered. Specimens were divided into 2 main groups (n=36) according to surface treatment method; Air particle abrasion (A) and laser (L). Each group was subdivided into 2 subgroups (N = 18) according to surface modification using primer; each subgroup was further divided into 2 subdivisions (N=9) according to the presence of salivary contamina…

Crosslinked Sulfonated Poly(vinyl alcohol)/Graphene Oxide Electrospun Nanofibers as Polyelectrolytes

2019

[EN] Taking advantage of the high functionalization capacity of poly(vinyl alcohol) (PVA), bead-free homogeneous nanofibrous mats were produced. The addition of functional groups by means of grafting strategies such as the sulfonation and the addition of nanoparticles such as graphene oxide (GO) were considered to bring new features to PVA. Two series of sulfonated and nonsulfonated composite nanofibers, with different compositions of GO, were prepared by electrospinning. The use of sulfosuccinic acid (SSA) allowed crosslinked and functionalized mats with controlled size and morphology to be obtained. The functionalization of the main chain of the PVA and the determination of the optimum co…

Uptake of silica covered Quantum Dots into living cells: Long term vitality and morphology study on hyaluronic acid biomaterials

2015

Quantum Dots (QDs) are promising very bright and stable fluorescent probes for optical studies in the biological field but water solubility and possible metal bio-contamination need to be addressed. In this work, a simple silica-QD hybrid system is prepared and the uptake in bovine chondrocytes living cells without any functionalization of the external protective silica shield is demonstrated. Moreover, long term treated cells vitality (up to 14 days) and the transfer of silica-QDs to the next cell generations are here reported. Confocal fluorescence microscopy was also used to determine the morphology of the so labelled cells and the relative silica-QDs distribution. Finally, we employ sil…

Unravelling Radicals Reactivity Towards Carbon Nanotubes Manipulation/Functionalization

2016

Carbon Nanotubes (CNTs) chemistry is under constant evolution, as a consequence of the deep interest of the scientific community in finding new applications for these versatile materials. New and old synthetic protocols are used for improving the control of the functionalization degree of the final materials and for offering to scientists the possibility to fine-tune their final properties. In this Review, we focus the attention on radical reactions, a class of protocols characterized by small number of steps, different degrees of functionalization and enhanced solubility of the final modified CNTs, in the desired environment. The most well-known protocols are analysed providing some releva…

Surface Modification of Nanoparticles and Nanovesicles via Click-Chemistry

2019

Surface modification of nanocarriers offers the possibility of targeted drug delivery, which is of major interest in modern pharmaceutical science. Click-chemistry affords an easy and fast way to modify the surface with targeting structures under mild reaction conditions. Here we describe our current method for the post-preparational surface modification of multifunctional sterically stabilized (stealth) liposomes via copper-catalyzed azide-alkyne cycloaddition (CuAAC) and inverse electron demand Diels-Alder norbornene-tetrazine cycloaddition (IEDDA). We emphasize the use of these in a one-pot orthogonal reaction for deep investigation on stability and targeting of nanocarriers. As the prod…

The effect of reaction conditions on the chain end structure and functionality during dehydrochlorination oftert-chlorine-telechelic polyisobutylene …

1998

Dehydrochlorination of tert-chlorine-telechelic polyisobutylene with potassium tert-butoxide in refluxing tetrahydrofuran is quantitative after 22 h, but results in ca. 3% endo olefin chain ends which are not reactive in some subsequent functionalization reactions. The formation of these undesired structures is most likely due to simultaneous thermally induced HCl loss. Lower temperatures and longer reaction times led to exclusive formation of external double bonds in some cases but to incomplete dehydrochlorination.

Approach Matters : The Kinetics of Interfacial Inverse-Electron Demand Diels-Alder Reactions

2017

Rapid and quantitative click functionalization of surfaces remains an interesting challenge in surface chemistry. In this regard, inverse electron demand Diels Alder (IEDDA) reactions represent a promising metal-free candidate. Herein, we reveal quantitative surface functionalization within 15 min. Furthermore, we report the comprehensive effects of substrate stereochemistry, surrounding microenvironment and substrate order on the reaction kinetics as obtained via a combination of XPS and surface-bound mass spectrometry (DART-MS).
