Drawing conclusions about what co-participants know: Knowledge-probing question–answer sequences in new employee orientation lectures

This study aims to uncover the processes of interaction through which knowledge acquisition in new employee orientation is monitored and controlled. Using video-recordings of orientation lectures as data, the study focuses on question–answer sequences in which the lecturer’s question probes into the state of the employees’ knowledge; in particular, it looks at the third turn of the sequence, in which the lecturer comes to a conclusion concerning the participants’ knowledge. International audience; Background: Drawing on theories of purposeful reading, this study explored task conditions that support fifth graders' selective reading of documents in order to answer questions. More specifically, we investigated whether promoting students' elaboration of their task model increases task performance. Methods: Participants had to answer series of questions by searching documents for the relevant information. Half the participants received a task model prompt, and half received a control prompt. In this note we exhibit bases of the polynomial identities satisfied by the Grassmann algebras over a field of positive characteristic. This allows us to answer the following question of Kemer: Does the infinite dimensional Grassmann algebra with 1, over an infinite fieldK of characteristic 3, satisfy all identities of the algebraM 2(K) of all 2×2 matrices overK? We give a negative answer to this question. Further, we show that certain finite dimensional Grassmann algebras do give a positive answer to Kemer's question.
