Abstract The aim of the present paper was to evaluate five passenger transport service providers (EMT urban buses, METROBUS metropolitan area buses, RENFE local trains, METRO underground trains and trams, TAXI) in a tourism-receiving metropolitan statistical area of Spain. User perceptions of the public transport services were obtained and the results indicate that public transport is making great efforts to adapt to user preferences. Despite the general level of satisfaction with public transport, however, not all the brands are equally interested in differentiation. Abstract. Quantifying the hydraulic properties of single fractures is a fundamental requirement to understand fluid flow in fractured reservoirs. For an ideal planar fracture, the effective flow is proportional to the cube of the fracture aperture. In contrast, real fractures are rarely planar, and correcting the cubic law in terms of fracture roughness has therefore been a subject of numerous studies in the past. Discrete element simulations of crumpling of thin sheets

Forced crumpling of stiff self-avoiding sheets is studied by discrete element simulations. Simulations display stress condensation and scaling of ridge energy in agreement with theoretical expectations for elastic and frictionless sheets, and extends such behavior to elasto-plastic sheets. Crumpling of ideally elastic and frictionless sheets is compared to that of elasto-plastic sheets and sheets with friction.

We have measured the lifetime of the metastable 3D 5/2 level in Ca+ using the “quantum jump" technique on a single stored and laser cooled ion in a linear Paul trap. We found a linear dependence of the measured decay rate on the power of the laser which repumps the ions from the long lived 3D 3/2 level. This can be explained by off-resonant depletion of the 3D 5/2 level. The proper lifetime of this level is obtained by a linear extrapolation of the measured lifetime to zero laser power. We obtain 1100(18) ms in agreement with theoretical calculations. Optically Enhanced Electric Field Sensing Using Nitrogen-Vacancy Ensembles

Nitrogen-vacancy (NV) centers in diamond have shown promise as inherently localized electric-field sensors, capable of detecting individual charges with nanometer resolution. Working with NV ensembles, we demonstrate that a detailed understanding of the internal electric field environment enables enhanced sensitivity in the detection of external electric fields. We follow this logic along two complementary paths. First, using excitation tuned near the NV's zero-phonon line, we perform optically detected magnetic resonance (ODMR) spectroscopy at cryogenic temperatures in order to precisely measure the NV center's excited-state susceptibility to electric fields. Polymer-brush lubricated surfaces with colloidal inclusions under shear inversion.

We characterize the response of compressed, sheared polymer-brush bilayers with colloidal inclusions to highly nonstationary inversion processes by means of molecular dynamics simulations and scaling theory. Bilayers with a simple (dimeric) solvent reveal an overshoot for the shear stress, while simulations of dry brushes without explicit solvent molecules fail to display this effect. We demonstrate that mechanical instabilities can be controlled by the inclusion of macromolecular structures, such as colloids of varying softness. Based on a recently developed theory, we suggest a scaling approach to determine a characteristic time for conformational and collective responses.
Scaling properties of magnetic domain walls in Pt/Co/Pt trilayers on MgO (111)

Abstract We present a scaling analysis of the time evolution of domain walls in ultrathin magnetic films that are subject to different forms of uncorrelated and correlated disorder caused by the microstructure of the underlying template. The study is performed on ultrafine modulated Pt/Co/Pt trilayers grown on as-supplied and structured MgO (1 1 1) substrates employing polar Kerr microscopy for the imaging of the magnetic domains.
Multi-color resonance ionization of laser ablated gadolinium at high laser power

Abstract Spectroscopic and analytical properties of a trace analytical method using multi-step resonance ionization at high laser intensities (>kW/cm 2 ) have been investigated with gadolinium as a test element. Strongly saturated transitions are observed, which have been used for a temperature determination of the atoms in the laser ablated plume. Regimes of multi-step resonance ionization and multiphoton ionization could be distinguished. Analytical performances due to resonance enhancement and resulting discrimination against non-resonant background, precision in isotope ratio determination and overall detection efficiency are discussed.
Generation and characterization of T40/A5754 interfaces with lasers

Laser-induced reactive wetting and brazing of T40 titanium with A5754 aluminum alloy with 1.5 mm thickness was carried out in lap-joint configuration, with or without the use of Al5Si filler wire. A 2.4 mm diameter laser spot was positioned on the aluminum side to provoke spreading and wetting of the lower titanium sheet, with relatively low scanning speeds (0.1 to 0.6 m/min). Process conditions did not play a very significant role on mechanical strengths, which were shown to reach 250-300 N/mm on a large range of laser power and scanning speeds.
