L'iconografia del candelabro per il cero pasquale della Cappella Palatina, con alcune considerazioni sul committente o donatore
2019
The candelabrum for the Easter candle in the Palatine Chapel in Palermo is in many ways one of the emblematic examples of Norman sculpture in Sicily, to be placed in the context of a broader Mediterranean current, classicistic and highly expressive, which includes contemporary productions of Tuscany, Emilia, Provence, Ile-de-France, Roussillon and Languedoc, Catalonia, up to the Holy Land of the Crusaders. This essay examines its complex iconography and proposes new hypotheses about its probable client or donor, the Archbishop of Salerno and chronicler Romualdo Guarna..
On the origin of functionalization in one-pot radiation synthesis of nanogels from aqueous polymer solutions
2016
Radiation-engineered poly(N-vinyl pyrrolidone) nanogels are very interesting biocompatible nanocarriers for i.v. administration of therapeutics and contrast agents for bioimaging. The manufacturing process is fast and effective, it grants excellent control of particle size and simultaneous sterilization of the formed nanogels. Interestingly, primary amino groups and carboxyl groups, useful for (bio)conjugation, are also formed in a dose-dependent fashion. In this paper, by means of both numerical simulations and experiments, the origin of nanogel size control and functionalization is investigated. This understanding offers a new dimension for the design and production of radiation-sculpture…

Restoration of a polymateric sculpture of the immaculate conception
2016
This study focuses on the intervention methodologies applied on a polymateric polychrome sculpture of the Immaculate Conception (18th century), located inside the chapel of the Oratorio dei Falegnami in Palermo. The peculiarity of this artefact is the employment of two different supports, upon which both the ground and paint layers are laid: a wooden one, carved and prepared, for the execution of the anatomical parts, and a textile one, sewn, pinned on and stiffened with glue, for the garments. The damage found was mainly attributed to: reaction of the artwork’s materials to the environment, lack of ordinary maintenance, and previous interventions. On the textile support, cleaning was hinde…
2014
The paper focuses on the analysis of ‘innovative’ technologies for low-cost survey: downstream test metrology and precise coding methodology, which could be of great support in the documen- tation, virtualization and dissemination of the sculptural heritage. The transposition of the museum works in 3D allows the return of models that can be used by remote –for studies, measurements, restorations, etc.–, no needing a physical contact with the piece, so in a non-invasive way. The virtual museum also offers the pos- sibility to organize exhibitions accessible to a wider audience.

COMPUTER AIDED RESTORATION TOOLS TO ASSIST THE CONSERVATION OF AN ANCIENT SCULPTURE. THE COLOSSAL STATUE OF ZEUS ENTHRONED
2017
Abstract. The research focuses on the contribution of the integrated application of Computer Aided Restoration digital procedures as a means to guide the integration measure of an artifact, innovating and implementing the traditional investigation methods. The aim of the study was to provide effective geometrical-formal investigation tools in the frame of the conservation work of Zeus enthroned from Soluntum, conserved in the Archaeological Museum “A. Salinas” of Palermo. The paper describes the workflow of the 3D acquisition and graphical modeling with non-invasive digitalization and high information density techniques to assist the conservation of the legs of the throne, especially the in…
SHINING 3D EINSCAN-PRO, application and validation in the field of Cultural Heritage, from the Chillida-Leku Museum to the Archaeological Museum of S…
2019
Abstract. The following contribution focuses on the low-cost Shining 3D EinScan-Pro scanner, above all the analysis of its precision and accuracy. The need to prove the functioning of this instrumentation in practical cases (the sculptures by Eduardo Chillida preserved in the Chillida-Leku Museum and along with some artefacts collected in the Archaeological Museum of Sarno), has led to the comparison and validation of the instrument through a methodology necessarily diversified from the guideline VDI/VDE 2634, part 2 and part 3, characteristics to the test the optical 3D measuring systems with planar measurement, which works according to the triangulation principle. In particular, two types…
