Oxidative cyclization of some aldehyde semicarbazones induced by metallic salts

1993

The oxidative cyclization of some aldehyde semicarbazones 10 with four different oxidizing agents has been effected. The structure of the semicarbazones and the nature of cyclizing agent affected the rate and yield of cyclization but they did not show any influence on the regiochemistry of reaction. In fact, 1,2,4-triazoline 20 was the only heterocyclic ring obtained by the cyclization reaction.

Double-quantum nutations in a two-level spin system

1986

The transient oscillatory behavior of the nonlinear response of a two-level electron-spin system is experimentally investigated in a sample of glassy silica with ${E}_{1}^{\mathcal{'}}$ centers (S=(1/2)) at microwave frequency at T=4.2 K. The transient regime, excited by an intense step-modulated radiation tuned to double-quantum (DQ) resonance, is monitored by revealing the second-harmonic (SH) wave radiated by the spins undergoing DQ transitions. Time- and frequency-domain results show that the emitted SH wave has two components: the former, which vanishes at the DQ resonance, exhibits an overdamped transient regime, the latter consists of damped oscillations at a frequency which depends …

Semicarbazides as gel forming agents for common solvents and liquid crystals

2006

This paper describes the synthesis of 14 new gelling agents with semicarbazide groups as H-bonding motifs and alkyl- and/or azobenzene side groups. They gel solvents like decaline, 1,2-dichlorobenzene and toluene and liquid crystalline mixtures. X-Ray structure analysis shows that the semicarbazides are connected by H-bonds, each molecule to four neighbours. As a result a ribbon is formed with a core of H-bonded semicarbazide groups and alkyl chains sticking to the side. IR measurements show an unchanged H-bonding motif in large crystals and in the gel fibres, even in LC-mixture. During heating the gel melts (rheology), while the H-bonding motif of the crystal disappears (IR and DSC measure…

Reversing agriculture from intensive to sustainable improves soil quality in a semiarid South Italian soil

2010

Intensive agriculture (IA) is widespread in South Italy, although it requires frequent tillage, large amounts of fertilizers and irrigation water. We have assessed the efficacy of reversing IA to sustainable agriculture (SA) in recovering quality of a typical South Italy soil (Lithic Haploxeralf). This reversion, lasting from 2000 to 2007, replaced 75% of nutrients formerly supplied inorganically by farmyard manuring and reduced the tillage frequency. Several chemical and biochemical properties, functionally related to C and N mineralisation–immobilisation processes and to P and S nutrient cycles, were monitored annually from 2005 to 2007 in the spring. Reversing IA to SA decreased soil bul…

Liquid-crystalline ordering as a concept in materials science: from semiconductors to stimuli-responsive devices.

2013

While the unique optical properties of liquid crystals (LCs) are already well exploited for flat-panel displays, their intrinsic ability to self-organize into ordered mesophases, which are intermediate states between crystal and liquid, gives rise to a broad variety of additional applications. The high degree of molecular order, the possibility for large scale orientation, and the structural motif of the aromatic subunits recommend liquid-crystalline materials as organic semiconductors, which are solvent-processable and can easily be deposited on a substrate. The anisotropy of liquid crystals can further cause a stimuli-responsive macroscopic shape change of cross-linked polymer networks, w…

Oxidative cyclization of aldehyde thiosemicarbazones induced by potassium ferricyanide and by tris(p-bromophenyl)amino hexachloroantimoniate. A joint…

2005

The oxidative ring closure reaction of some aryl-substituted thiosemicarbazones induced by "bona fide" one-electron abstracting agents was investigated, by means of both experimental and computational techniques. The corresponding 1,2,4-triazole derivatives were the only cyclization products observed. The occurrence of two slightly different mechanistic pathways for the reaction is discussed.

Synthetic studies on neoclerodane diterpenes from Salvia splendens: oxidative modifications of ring A.

2011

Salvinorin A (1), a neoclerodane diterpene from the hallucinogenic mint Salvia divinorum, is the only known naturally occurring non-nitrogenous and specific κ-opioid agonist. Some oxidative modifications of the A ring in the congeners of 1 isolated from Salvia splendens salviarin, splenolide B, splendidin and in the non-natural 8-epi-salviarin gave new derivatives, some of which were tested as agonists at opioid receptors. However, none of these compounds were active. The presence of the C-18, C-19 lactone could be at the origin of the observed lack of binding affinity.

Hybrid Molecular Materials Based upon the Photochromic Nitroprusside Complex, [Fe(CN)5NO]2-, and Organic π-Electron Donors. Synthesis, Structure, and…

2000

An organic/inorganic hybrid salt is obtained by combination of the photochromic nitroprusside complex with the organic donor TTF. The organic part shows an unprecedented 2D organization formed by an orthogonal arrangement of TTF hexamers and monomers. However, the donor layers are formed by pairs of moderately interacting dimeric (TTF)22+ units surrounded by neutral TTF molecules in such a way that the charge is localized and the compound is a semiconductor. Short contacts between the organic layers and the nitroprusside anions are present that may affect the photophysical properties of the nitroprusside.
