Presepsin and Midregional Proadrenomedullin in Pediatric Oncologic Patients with Febrile Neutropenia

Abstract Objective In this study, we investigated the roles of presepsin (PSP) and midregional proadrenomedullin (mr-proADM) in children with febrile neutropenia (FN) due to chemotherapy. Methods We assessed 36 FN episodes in 26 children. Patients were classified into bacteremia (B) and fever of unknown origin (FUO) groups. We evaluated PSP and mr-proADM at admission (T0), after 24/48 h (T1), and after 5 days (T2). Results PSP and mr-proADM levels were elevated at T0 and significantly decreased at T2. mr-proADM levels did not significantly differ between the B and FUO groups. A case of naturally evolving gout in an elderly man

Gout is a common disorder in adults that can lead to severe organ decline, disability and impaired quality of life due to the formation of periarticular tophi. We report a case of massive tophaceous gout in a 78-year-old man with a 16-year-long history of untreated disease. The patient gradually became disabled, his renal function deteriorated, and he finally died of sepsis. Our case demonstrates that chronic gout not only affects the joints, but is also associated with organ function decline and can, even nowadays, lead to death. © 2011 Elsevier Ireland Ltd.

ABSTRACT We report the isolation of thymidine-dependent small-colony variants (TD-SCVs) of Staphylococcus aureus from unusual infection sites of patients with chronic soft tissue infection, tympanitis, bronchitis, peritonitis, and septicemia. Furthermore, we provide evidence that the essential growth factor for TD-SCVs, i.e., thymidine, and its metabolite dTMP are present in various human specimens.

OBJECTIVES: To identify predictors of poor prognosis in previously healthy young individuals admitted with COVID-19. METHODS: We studied a cohort of patients hospitalized with COVID-19 disease. All patients without comorbidities, no usual treatments and =65years old were selected from an international registry (HOPE-COVID-19, NCT04334291). We focused on baseline variables-symptoms and signs at admission-to analyze risk factors for poor prognosis.
