Neuronal and neuroendocrine mechanisms of social rank and stress coping in teleost fish
2015
Fights for social dominance are stressful and results in an activation of the brain serotonergic system. Subordinate animals in an established dominance hierarchy are characterized by a chronic elevation of brain serotonergic activity, an effect that seems to mediate the behavioural inhibition observed in these animals. By contrast, social dominance has been associated with elevated dopaminergic activity, and dopamine (DA) has behavioural effects to some extent opposing those of serotonin (5HT). In addition to effects of the social environment, brain monoaminergic functions are controlled by genetic factors. For instance, zebrafish (Danio rerio) classified as bold, showing a propensity for …
Behavioral genetics of suicidality in Bipolar Disorder: the interaction between SERT and CLOCK polymorphisms and early-life stress
Serotonin–dopamine interaction: an overview
2008
Central serotonergic and dopaminergic systems play a critical role in the regulation of normal and abnormal behaviours. Moreover, recent evidence suggests that the dysfunction of dopamine (DA) and serotonin (5-hydroxytriptamine, 5-HT) neurotransmission might underlie the pathophysiology of neuropsychiatric disorders, including depression, schizophrenia, attention deficit hyperactivity disorders, drug abuse, Gilles de la Tourette's syndrome and Parkinson's disease.
Fluorine-containing drugs approved by the FDA in 2019
2020
Abstract Eleven new fluorine-containing FDA-approved drugs have been profiled and details of their discovery and preparation are discussed. Therapeutic areas include schizophrenia, migraine, multiple sclerosis, insomnia, rheumatoid arthritis, anti-tuberculosis, breast cancer, lymphoma kinase inhibitor, serotonin receptor antagonist. New pharmaceuticals feature four examples of aromatic fluorine, three aromatic CF3 group, three aliphatic CF3 and one compound with aromatic CF3O group. Furthermore, among the new compounds, six are chiral and seven are derived from tailor-made amino acids.
N-Butylpyrrolidone (NBP) as a non-toxic substitute for NMP in iron-catalyzed C(sp2)–C(sp3) cross-coupling of aryl chlorides
2021
Although iron catalyzed cross-coupling reactions show extraordinary promise in reducing the environmental impact of more toxic and scarce transition metals, one of the main challenges is the use of reprotoxic NMP (NMP = N-methylpyrrolidone) as the key ligand to iron in the most successful protocols in this reactivity platform. Herein, we report that non-toxic and sustainable N-butylpyrrolidone (NBP) serves as a highly effective substitute for NMP in iron-catalyzed C(sp2)–C(sp3) cross-coupling of aryl chlorides with alkyl Grignard reagents. This challenging alkylation proceeds with organometallics bearing β-hydrogens with efficiency superseding or matching that of NMP with ample scope and br…

Two new substances are produced in submerged cultures of Cordyceps militaris fed with 5-hydroxyindole. These substances, separated by column chromatography with polyamide and isolated afterwards, have been identified as ω-N-acetyl-5-hydroxytryptophan and ω-N-acetyl-serotonin by their reaction with diazomethane, by elementary an…
Effects of LHRH, progesterone, estradiol-17 ? and dexamethasone in vitro on pineal synaptic ribbons and serotonin N-acetyltransferase activity in die…
1991
Pineal glands of regularly cycling Sprague Dawley rats (180-220 g) killed on the diestrous morning (between 0900-1000 h) were incubated in appropriate media for six hours with LHRH (8.5 microM), progesterone (3.2 microM), estradiol-17 beta (370 nM) or dexamethasone (250 nM). Pineals incubated in hormone-free medium and unincubated glands served as controls. Six rats were used in each group. After incubation the glands were divided into two parts. One part was used to estimate serotonin N-acetyltransferase (NAT) activity. The other part was processed for electron microscopy to quantify synaptic ribbons (SR). The SR numbers were computed to 20,000 microns 2 area of pineal tissue. The number a…
Zirkadiane Serotonin- und Melatonin-Serumspiegel bei Anorexia-nervosa-Patientinnen im Vergleich zu normal-menstruierenden Frauen
1996
Day and night rhythms of melatonin and serotonin were measured in four female anorexia nervosa patients and for comparison in a control group with normal 28-day menstrual cycle. In the anorexia nervosa group the levels of gonadotropins and sexual steroids were distinctly lowered. In the LHRH test the hormonal profile showed pubertal to prepubertal patterns of secretion with an only moderate increase of LH and distinct shifting of the LH/FSH ratio in direction of FSH. For both groups the 24-hour profiles of melatonin and serotonin showed a normal cycle, i.e. melatonin had its maximum by night, whereas serotonin in contrast displayed its highest values by day. However, in the group of patient…
Effects of Environmental Lighting and Tryptophan Devoid Diet on the Rat Vaginal Cycle
1998
Cerebral serotonin level influences luteinizing hormone release and, consequently, ovulation. The present study evaluated the effects of precooked maize meal (polenta), a diet almost devoid of tryptophan the serotonin precursor on the alterations of the estrus cycle as measured by vaginal smears analysis in Wistar rats. Several conditions of environmental lighting were used in order to modify ovarian cycle: 1) natural alternating light/dark cycle; 2) continuous darkness; 3) continuous light by sodium steams: 4) continuous light by fluorescent neon tubes. Rats bred in continuous lighting showed estrus-proestrus rate significantly greater than rats bred in normal lighting or in continuous dar…
Regulation of serotonin release from the intestinal mucosa.
1991
Summary In the mammalian intestine serotonin (5-hydroxytryptamine, 5-HT) is present in high concentrations in the enterochromaffin cells. The release of 5-HT from the intestinal mucosa is regulated by a complex pattern of neuronal and humoral inputs to the enterochromaffin cells. The enterochromaffin cells appear to be endowed with different inhibitory ( α 2 -adrenoceptors, GABA A - and GABA B -receptors, histamine H 3 -receptors, receptors for vasoactive intestinal polypeptide and somatostatin) as well as stimulatory receptors ( β -adrenoceptors, muscarine and nicotine receptors). The physiological significance of this complex system of receptors is suggested by experiments which demonstra…
