Stochastic Nonlinear Time Series Forecasting Using Time-Delay Reservoir Computers: Performance and Universality

2014

International audience; Reservoir computing is a recently introduced machine learning paradigm that has already shown excellent performances in the processing of empirical data. We study a particular kind of reservoir computers called time-delay reservoirs that are constructed out of the sampling of the solution of a time-delay diFFerential equation and show their good performance in the forecasting of the conditional covariances associated to multivariate discrete-time nonlinear stochastic processes of VEC-GARCH type as well as in the prediction of factual daily market realized volatilities computed with intraday quotes, using as training input daily log-return series of moderate size. We …

Combining a data-driven approach with seasonal forecast data to predict reservoir water volume in the Mediterranean area

2023

Prolonged droughts and water scarcity have become more frequent in recent years, exacerbating the problem of the artificial reservoirs management in the Mediterranean area. This study proposes a methodology which combines a Nonlinear AutoRegressive network with eXogenous input (NARX) data-driven model with Seasonal Forecasts (SFs) data, with the aim to predict the water volume stored in reservoirs at a mid-term scale, as requested by the local authority. The methodology is applied to four Sicilian reservoirs that experienced water scarcity in the recent past. SFs produced at the European Centre for Medium-Range Weather Forecasting are used to force the NARX models. Also, the reservoirs are …

Underbalance well completion - a modern approach for mature gas fields

2017

The exploitation of natural gas fields from Transylvanian Basin started a century ago. The majority of these fields were discovered and developed in the last century, from 1950 to 1970. So, these reservoirs have over 50 years of production historical. These are mature fields with a very low reservoir pressure. Now, for some of these reservoirs the pressure is 10 – 20 % of initial values. The biggest challenge for a production company is to make completions and recompletions in depleted reservoirs wells. At the beginning was not a problem to do a workover in these wells because the completion fluids were lost in the reservoir and the pressure helped the wells to clean up. Now, because the re…

Non-linear neuro-inspired circuits and systems: Processing and learning issues

2018

In this chapter the main elements useful for the design and realization of the neural architectures reported in the following chapters will be presented. Considering spiking and non-spiking neurons, the models used for implementing each of them, the synaptic models, the basic learning and plasticity algorithms and the network architectures will be introduced and analysed. The key elements that led to their selection and application in the developed neuro-inspired systems will be discussed briefly.

Advances in photonic reservoir computing

2017

We review a novel paradigm that has emerged in analogue neuromorphic optical computing. The goal is to implement a reservoir computer in optics, where information is encoded in the intensity and phase of the optical field. Reservoir computing is a bio-inspired approach especially suited for processing time-dependent information. The reservoir’s complex and high-dimensional transient response to the input signal is capable of universal computation. The reservoir does not need to be trained, which makes it very well suited for optics. As such, much of the promise of photonic reservoirs lies in their minimal hardware requirements, a tremendous advantage over other hardware-intensive neural net…

Bedrock Characterisation of Four Candidate Repository Sites in Finland As Determined by He-Gas Methods

1999

AbstractAt the end of the year 2000, one of four sites will be chosen as the final repository site in Finland. Therefore accurate and comprehensive statistics of the bedrock characteristics such as porosity [% ] and effective diffusion coefficient [m2/s ] of these sites are of importance. Altogether 115 rock samples from the four sites were measured by different He-gas methods to achieve this goal. The results obtained indicate that the average bedrock properties at these sites are quite similar. Variations among individual samples and different rock types within one repository site were larger than variations among the averaged values of the four sites. Some indication of increased microfra…

Entanglement control via reservoir engineering in ultracold atomic gases

2013

We study the entanglement of two impurity qubits immersed in a Bose-Einstein condensate (BEC) reservoir. This open quantum system is particularly interesting because the reservoir and system parameters are easily controllable and the reduced dynamics is highly non-Markovian. We show how the model allows for interpolation between a common dephasing scenario and an independent dephasing scenario by simply modifying the wavelength of the superlattice superposed to the BEC, and how this influences the dynamical properties of the impurities. We demonstrate the existence of very rich entanglement dynamics correspondent to different values of reservoir parameters, including phenomena such as entan…

Respiratory GAS Exchange and pO2- Distribution in Splenic Tissue

1973

Little attention has been paid to physiological aspects of O2 supply to splenic tissue. Studies are performed to examine the factors determining the supply conditions for the rabbit’s spleen, which has little reservoir function and, therefore, it is very similar to the human spleen. Previous studies on respiratory gas exchange, applying the arterial and spleno-venous blood gas values, have shown a mean arterio-venous O2-difference of 0.5 Vol.% (2). Taking into account a mean splenic blood flow of 110 ml/100g/min (12), the O2 consumption of splenic tissue amounts to 0.6 ml/100g/min.

Considerations on sand control in natural gas wells

2017

Mechanism of sand production in gas wells is complex and influenced by every operation performed into the well, starting from the opening of the production interval by drilling, and continuing with completion and putting into production as well as with the exploitation regime. Sand production along with fluids from gas reservoirs creates a series of potentially dangerous and costly problems. For selecting the most appropriate methods of sand-control all the data and information related to properties of reservoir rock, the history of sand production, the potential well flow rates as well as HSE and costs need to be evaluated. The conclusion of the authors is that the best results in sand con…

Theory of quantum-circuit refrigeration by photon-assisted electron tunneling

2017

We focus on a recently experimentally realized scenario of normal-metal-insulator-superconductor tunnel junctions coupled to a superconducting resonator. We develop a first-principles theory to describe the effect of photon-assisted electron tunneling on the quantum state of the resonator. Our results are in very good quantitative agreement with the previous experiments on refrigeration and heating of the resonator using the photon-assisted tunneling, thus providing a stringent verification of the developed theory. Importantly, our results provide simple analytical estimates of the voltage-tunable coupling strength and temperature of the thermal reservoir formed by the photon-assisted tunne…
