Fatal Anaphylactic Shock Ceftriaxone-Induced in a 4-Year-Old Child

One of the most used cephalosporin in clinical practice is ceftriaxone. Anaphylaxis due to the administration of ceftriaxone is considered a rare event. Here, we report a case of fatal anaphylactic shock after the administration of ceftriaxone in a child who had tolerated the drug in past exposures. The allergic pathogenesis is sustained by the clinical data (short time between the inoculation of the drug and the onset of the symptoms; past exposure to the same molecule and probable sensitization) and the postmortem examination findings (polivisceral congestion and intense eosinophilia found in the histological examination).

Embolic stroke, sinus rhythm and left atrial mechanical function

A 64-year-old man manifested a stroke two years after restoration of sinus rhythm through a radiofrequency catheter ablation. Transesophageal echo- cardiography demonstrated the presence of a thrombus in the left atrial appendage. Left atrial volumes and different parameters of atrial emptying showed that, de- spite the persistence of the sinus rhythm, atrial mechanical function was severely impaired. After atrial ablation procedures echocardiography can be useful to stratify pa- tients according to their risk of developing embolic events and hence be of help in deciding whether or not discontinuation of anticoagulant therapy is the appropri- ate choice.

Acute occlusion of the left main coronary artery (LMCA) is a rare angiographic finding. We report five patients with acute myocardial infarction (AMI) and one patient with unstable angina, in whom reperfusion was achieved or attempted with percutaneous transluminal coronary angioplasty (PTCA). All patients had a long history of stable angina pectoris. The indication for emergency PTCA was cardiogenic shock in the five patients with MI. PTCA was successful in five of six patients. Three patients with reperfusion survived, three died. All survivors underwent coronary artery bypass grafting (CABG) and were still alive at 23 months, 3 and 8 years respectively in NYHA functional class II or III.…

The microstructure evolution of Cu-nanostructured powders versus the ball milling conditions was investigated by whole peak profile powder pattern modeling method. This method allows defining in some approach the characteristics of as-milled Cu powder microstructure in terms of crystallite size, type and density of dislocations and twin faults density. In the present investigation, synthesis of manganese zinc ferrite (Mn(0.5)Zn(0.5)Fe(2)O(4)) nanoparticles with narrow size distribution have been prepared using ultrasound assisted emulsion (consisting of rapeseed oil as an oil phase and aqueous solution of Mn(2+), Zn(2+) and Fe(2+) acetates) and evaporation processes. The as-prepared ferrite was nanocrystalline. In order to remove the small amount of oil present on the surface of the ferrite, it was subjected to heat treatment at 300 °C for 3h. International audience; The oxidation of pentan-2-ol was investigated at high-pressure in a jet-stirred reactor and in a shock tube. Experiments in the JSR were carried out at 10 atm, between 500-1180 K, for five different equivalence ratios of = 0.35, 0.5, 1, 2, 4 and 1000 ppm of fuel, at a constant residence time of 0.7 s. Generation and characterization of T40/A5754 interfaces with lasers

Laser-induced reactive wetting and brazing of T40 titanium with A5754 aluminum alloy with 1.5 mm thickness was carried out in lap-joint configuration, with or without the use of Al5Si filler wire. A 2.4 mm diameter laser spot was positioned on the aluminum side to provoke spreading and wetting of the lower titanium sheet, with relatively low scanning speeds (0.1 to 0.6 m/min). Process conditions did not play a very significant role on mechanical strengths, which were shown to reach 250-300 N/mm on a large range of laser power and scanning speeds.
