Interfacial reaction during MOCVD growth revealed by in situ ARXPS.

2006

International audience; Angle-resolved X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy (ARXPS) experiments were performed to study in situ the reaction at the film–substrate interface during metal organic chemical vapor deposition (MOCVD) growth of TiO2 thin films deposited on the silicon substrate. The in-depth distribution of chemical species was determined using several ARXPS thickness calculation models considering either single or bilayer systems. By the comparison of two single-layermodels, the presence of a second layer composed of silicon oxidewas evidenced. High-resolution transmission electron microscopy (HRTEM) observations confirmed the stratification of the film in two layers, as well as the …

Angle resolved X-ray photoemission spectroscopy double layer model for in situ characterization of metal organic chemical vapour deposition nanometri…

2007

International audience; In situ Angle Resolved X-ray Photoemission Spectroscopy (ARXPS) characterizations of TiO2 thin films grown on silicon by Metal Organic Chemical Vapour Deposition were performed in order to get information on interfacial reactions at the first stages of the growth, one of the aims being to understand the influence of deposition conditions. Thickness measurements were also carried out from ARXPS analyses. As the real structure of the films was shown to be a double layer system such as TiO2/SiO2/Si, an ARXPS model of thickness and surface coverage determination was applied to each layer independently. However, the application of this model to very thin films underestima…

Ultrapure laser-synthesized Si nanoparticles with variable oxidation states for biomedical applications

2020

We employ a method of femtosecond laser fragmentation of preliminarily prepared water-dispersed microcolloids to fabricate aqueous solutions of ultrapure bare Si-based nanoparticles (Si-NPs) and assess their potential for biomedical applications. The nanoparticles appear spherical in shape, with low size dispersion and a controllable mean size, from a few nm to several tens of nm, while a negative surface charge (−35 mV ± 0.10 according to z-potential data) provides good electrostatic stabilization of colloidal Si-NP solutions. Structural analysis shows that the Si-NPs are composed of Si nanocrystals with inclusions of silicon oxide species, covered by a SiOx (1 < x < 2) shell, while the to…

First images obtained in the near infrared spectrum with the photon scanning tunneling microscope

1993

Abstract First images obtained in the near infrared spectrum with a photon scanning tunneling microscope are presented. The intensity of the light collected by the fibertip, at λ = 1.3 λm , which is a function of the separation between the tip and the sample surface is in agreement with that predicted by the theory. Images of quartz and silicon oxide are presented and the latter is compared with that obtained by an atomic force microscope.

A Novel Plasmonic Nanoantenna for High Efficiency Energy Harvesting Applications

2020

In this paper, the results of a geometric investigation of plasmonic nanoantennas for energy harvesting applications in terms of field enhancement and available power are presented. Optimum performances are obtained by a particular arrow-shaped bowtie nanoantennas geometry. The novel nanoantenna geometry is here presented. The simulations of the novel nanoantennas made of aluminium, on a three-layers substrate, composed by silicon, silicon oxide, and aluminium, carried out with CST 2018 tool, are reported and compared with the classical bowtie nanoantennas ones. This study can guide both the engineering and the fabrication of plasmonic nanoantennas.

Nanoscale Deposition of Single-Molecule Magnets onto SiO2 Patterns

2007

bet on a silicon oxide template while the rest ofthe macroscopic surface remains free of molecules. Local oxi-dation was used to fabricate silicon oxide nanopatterns, eitherdots or stripes, over a Si (100) surface coated with a SAM.Their width ranged from 30 to 500 nm whereas the lengthcould be modified from a few nanometers up to several mi-crometers. Nanoscale direct assembly arose from a combina-tion of three factors: i) the strength of the attractive electro-static interactions between the molecules and the local oxides;ii) the weak repulsive interaction between the molecules andthe unpatternedsurface; and iii) the size of the nanopattern.Local oxidation nanolithography (LON) allows the…

The evolution of the fraction of Er ions sensitized by Si nanostructures in silicon-rich silicon oxide thin films

2009

Photoluminescence (PL) and time-resolved PL experiments as a function of the elaboration process are performed on Er-doped silicon-rich silicon oxide (SRO:Er) thin films grown under NH(3) atmosphere. These PL measurements of the Er(3+) emission at 1.54 microm under non-resonant pumping with the Er f-f transitions are obtained for different Er(3+) concentrations, ranging from 0.05 to 1.4 at.%, and various post-growth annealing temperatures of the layers. High resolution transmission electron microscopy (HRTEM) and energy-filtered TEM (EFTEM) analysis show a high density of Si nanostructures composed of amorphous and crystalline nanoclusters varying from 2.7 x 10(18) to 10(18) cm(-3) as a fun…

Cathodo- and Photo- Luminescence of Silicon Rich Oxide Films Obtained by LPCVD

2012

Silicon technology dominates the electronics industry today, so it is highly desirable the development of silicon-based components compatible with silicon technology, allowing integration of electrical and optical components on a single chip. One promising approach to the development of a silicon based light emitter is Silicon Rich Oxide (SRO), also called offstoichiometric silicon oxide. The interest on the optical properties of this material has grown since it was demonstrated that SRO films subjected to high-temperature annealing exhibit efficient photoluminescence (PL) (Iacona et al., 2000; Shimizu-Iwayama et al., 1996).

Advanced fragmentation stage of oxide coating on polymer substrate under biaxial tension

2005

Crack patterns of 100-nm-thick silicon oxide coating on polypropylene film subjected to equibiaxial stress loading are studied experimentally. The loading is achieved by means of a bulging cell mounted under an optical microscope with stepwise pressurization of film specimens. The evolution of the coating fragment area distribution at relatively high strains is modeled using Weibull statistics to describe the coating strength. The fragment area distribution at an advanced fragmentation stage is shown to scale with the average fragment area, the latter being a power function of the applied biaxial strain.

Organic Monolayers by B(C6F5)3-Catalyzed Siloxanation of Oxidized Silicon Surfaces

2017

Inspired by the homogeneous catalyst tris(pentafluorophenyl) borane [B(C6F5)3], which acts as a promotor of Si-H bond activation, we developed and studied a method of modifying silicon oxide surfaces using hydrosilanes with B(C6F5)3 as the catalyst. This dedihydrosiloxanation reaction yields complete surface coverage within 10 min at room temperature. Organic monolayers derived from hydrosilanes with varying carbon chain lengths (C8-C18) were prepared on oxidized Si(111) surfaces, and the thermal and hydrolytic stabilities of the obtained monolayers were investigated in acidic (pH 3) medium, basic (pH 11) medium, phosphate-buffered saline (PBS), and deionized water (neutral conditions) for …
