Dicyclopentaannelated Hexa-peri-hexabenzocoronenes with a Singlet Biradical Ground State

2021

Abstract Synthesis of two dicyclopentaannelated hexa‐peri‐hexabenzocoronene (PHBC) regioisomers was carried out, using nonplanar oligoaryl precursors with fluorenyl groups: mPHBC 8 with two pentagons in the “meta”‐configuration was obtained as a stable molecule, while its structural isomer with the “para”‐configuration, pPHBC 16, could be generated and characterized only in situ due to its high chemical reactivity. Both PHBCs exhibit low energy gaps, as reflected by UV‐vis‐NIR absorption and electrochemical measurements. They also show open‐shell singlet ground states according to electron paramagnetic resonance (EPR) measurements and density functional theory (DFT) calculations. The use of…

Towards an accurate molecular orbital theory for excited states : Ethene, butadiene, and hexatriene

1993

A newly proposed quantum chemical approach for ab initio calculations of electronic spectra of molecular systems is applied to the molecules ethene, trans‐1,3‐butadiene, and trans‐trans‐1,3,5‐hexatriene. The method has the aim of being accurate to better than 0.5 eV for excitation energies and is expected to provide structural and physical data for the excited states with good reliability. The approach is based on the complete active space (CAS) SCF method, which gives a proper description of the major features in the electronic structure of the excited state, independent of its complexity, accounts for all near degeneracy effects, and includes full orbital relaxation. Remaining dynamic ele…

Interligand Electron Transfer Determines Triplet Excited State Electron Injection in RuN3−Sensitized TiO2 Films

2004

Electron injection from the transition metal complex Ru(dcbpy)(2)(NCS)(2) (dcbpy = 2,2'-bipyridine-4,4'-dicarboxylate) into a titanium dioxide nanoparticle film occurs along two pathways. The dominating part of the electron injection proceeds from the initially excited singlet state of the sensitizer into the conduction band of the semiconductor on the sub-hundred-femtosecond time scale. The slower part of the injection occurs from the thermalized triplet excited state on the picosecond time scale in a nonexponential fashion, as was shown in a previous study (Benko, G.; et al. J. Am. Chem. Soc. 2002, 124, 489). Here we show that the slower channel of injection is the result of the excited s…

Adducts of free-base meso-tetraarylporphyrins with trihaloacetic acids: Structure and photostability

2020

Abstract Four diverse meso-tetraarylporphyrins in the form of diprotonated adducts with trifluoro-, trichloro-, tribromoacetic acids and acetic acid were investigated in benzene solution. Despite similar structural distortion of the chromophore system due to protonation, the respective adducts demonstrated different photostability when exposed to UV irradiation. The trifluoro- and trichloroacetic adducts, and the acetic acid one, showed some common features both molecular and in the mechanism of photodegradation. However, the tribromo-derivative decayed according to a different kinetic scheme, revealing a considerable impact of the bromine atoms upon the pyrrole units of the porphyrin macro…

Magnetic excitations of the singlet ground state antiferromagnet CsFeBr3 in a magnetic field

1991

Abstract The magnetic excitations in the quasi-one-dimensional singlet ground state antiferromagnet CsFeBr3 have been studied by inelastic neutron scattering in the presence of an applied magnetic field, H‖c and H⊥c. With H‖c, the dispersion curves renormalise so that the exchange interaction has a decreasing influence with increasing field. H⊥c has little or no effect on the dispersion of the magnetic excitations.

Electronic Structures and Molecular Properties of Chalcogen Nitrides Se2N2 and SeSN2

2006

The electronic structures and molecular properties of S2N2 as well as the currently unknown chalcogen nitrides Se2N2 and SeSN2 have been studied using various ab initio and density functional methods. All molecules share a qualitatively similar electronic structure and can be primarily described as 2π-electron aromatics having minor singlet diradical character of 6−8% that can be attributed solely to the nitrogen atoms. This diradical character is manifested in the prediction of their molecular properties, in which coupled cluster and multiconfigurational approaches, as well as density functional methods, show the best performance. The conventional ab initio methods RHF and MP2 completely f…

Fe3O4@Au@mSiO2 as an enhancing nanoplatform for Rose Bengal photodynamic activity

2017

A novel nanoplatform composed of three types of materials with different functionalities, specifically core-shell Fe3O4@Au nanoparticles encapsulated near the outer surface of mesoporous silica (mSiO2) nanoparticles, has been successfully synthesised and used to enhance the efficiency of a photosensitiser, namely Rose Bengal, in singlet oxygen generation. Fe3O4 is responsible for the unusual location of the Fe3O4@Au nanoparticle, while the plasmonic shell acts as an optical antenna. In addition, the mesoporous silica matrix firmly encapsulates Rose Bengal by chemical bonding inside the pores, thus guaranteeing its photostability, and in turn making the nanosystem biocompatible. Moreover, th…

Photolysis of N-hydroxpyridinethiones: a new source of hydroxyl radicals for the direct damage of cell-free and cellular DNA.

1996

N-Hydroxypyridine-2-thione (2-HPT), known to release hydroxyl radicals on irradiation with visible light, and two related compounds, viz. N-hydroxypyridine-4-thione (4-HPT) and N-hydroxyacridine-9-thione (HAT), were tested for their potency to induce DNA damage in L1210 mouse leukemia cells and in isolated DNA from bacteriophage PM2. DNA single-strand breaks and modifications sensitive to various repair endonucleases (Fpg protein, endonuclease III, exonuclease III, T4 endonuclease V) were quantified. Illumination of cell-free DNA in the presence of 2-HPT and 4-HPT gave rise to damage profiles characteristic for hydroxyl radicals, i.e. single-strand breaks and the various endonuclease-sensit…

Tuning the photophysical properties of anti-B18H22: efficient intersystem crossing between excited singlet and triplet states in new 4,4'-(HS)2-anti-…

2013

The tuning of the photophysical properties of the highly fluorescent boron hydride cluster anti-B18H22 (1), by straightforward chemical substitution to produce 4,4'-(HS)2-anti-B18H20 (2), facilitates intersystem crossing from excited singlet states to a triplet manifold. This subsequently enhances O2((1)Δg) singlet oxygen production from a quantum yield of ΦΔ ∼ 0.008 in 1 to 0.59 in 2. This paper describes the synthesis and full structural characterization of the new compound 4,4'-(HS)2-anti-B18H20 (2) and uses UV-vis spectroscopy coupled with density functional theory (DFT) and ab initio computational studies to delineate and explain its photophysical properties.
