Pyrolysis-GC-MS and CuO-oxidation-HPLC in the characterization of HMMs from sediments and surface waters downstream of a pulp mill

Abstract High molecular mass fractions of lignin and humic compounds in sediments and waters downstream of a pulp mill were characterized applying pyrolysis-gas chromatography-mass spectrometry. The results were compared to those obtained using reversed phase HPLC on the cupric oxide oxidation products. The chromatographic data of both pyrolysis and cupric oxide oxidation were also subjected to the principal component analysis (PCA). The sediment samples and fractions obtained by ultrafiltration of river water samples were freeze dried prior to characterization. Intravitreal pegaptanib sodium for refractory pseudophakic macular oedema.

Evaluate the efficacy of intravitreal pegaptanib sodium (Macugen®) in refractory pseudophakic cystoid macular oedema (CME). Prospective, nonrandomized, interventional case series. Four eyes of four patients with refractory pseudophakic CME to pars plana vitrectomy and intravitreal bevacizumab and triamcinolone, were treated with pegaptanib sodium, with a mean follow up of 4 months. Pre- and postinfection examinations included assessment of best-corrected visual acuity (BCVA) using the Early Treatment Diabetic Retinopathy Study chart (ETDRS), fluorescein angiography (FA), and optical coherence tomography (OCT). Determination of Diffusion Parameters by a Computer Code (FDP) Based on Mathematica 6.0

A computer code named Fitting for Diffusion Parameters (FDP) based on Mathematica 6.0 has been developed for modeling through- and out-diffusion experiments. FDP was used to determine the diffusion coefficients (De ) and the rock capacity factors (α) for tritiated water (HTO) and 22 Na+ and the distribution coefficient (Kd ) of 22 Na+ in Opalinus Clay (OPA). The values for De and α were obtained by fitting the results of experimental data of both transient and steady-state phases to the analytical solution of accumulated activity. Nitric oxide and excitatory postsynaptic currents in immature rat sympathetic preganglionic neurons in vitro.

Neuronal nitric oxide synthase immunoreactivity was localized to sympathetic preganglionic neurons of the intermediolateral cell column and cyclic GMP immunoreactivity to nerve fibers projecting into the intermediolateral cell column of 20-25-day-old rats. Whole-cell patch-clamp recordings were made from sympathetic preganglionic neurons in spinal cord slices of immature rats and the role of nitric oxide and cyclic GMP on excitatory postsynaptic currents was studied. Regional cerebral blood flow and regional metabolism in cold induced oedema.

24 hours following a cold induced oedema in cats rCBF was measured in the lesion area, the bluish stained cortex immediately adjacent to the lesion, a cortical area remote from the lesion, and in the contralateral uninjured hemisphere. Thereafter the brain was frozen and the respective tissue areas were removed and analyzed for water and electrolyte content as well as metabolite concentrations. It seems, that in the neighbourhood of a local lesion at least 3 different brain regions can be differentiated with regard to their characteristic pattern of data. Swelling, Acidosis, and Irreversible Damage of Glial Cells from Exposure to Arachidonic Acid in vitro

Swelling and damage of C6 glioma cells and of primary cultured astrocytes were analyzed in vitro during incubation with arachidonic acid (AA; 20:4). The cells were suspended in a physiological medium supplemented with AA at concentrations of 0.001–1.0 m M. Cell swelling was quantified by flow cytometry with hydrodynamic focusing. Flow cytometry was also utilized for assessment of cell viability by exclusion of the fluorescent dye propidium iodide and for measurement of the intracellular pH (pHi) by 2′,7′-bis-(2-carboxyethyl)−5(and −6)carboxyfluorescein. Complex platinum (Pt) compounds are known as occupational respiratory sensitizers whereas their role in skin exposure is unclear. In this study, both skin irritation and induction of contact hypersensitivity by halide Pt salts were characterized in mice. Repeated application of Na2[PtCl6] (5% in acetone) to both ears of naive BALB/c mice induced activation of the draining auricular lymph nodes. Extracellular space and electrolyte distribution in cortex and white matter of dog brain in cold induced oedema

24 hours after a circumscribed cold injury of the cortex dog brains were perfused from the lateral ventricle and the frontal subarachnoidal space to the cisterna magna with an artificial CSF containing trace amounts of35S-labelled thiosulphate. Simultaneously the extracellular tracer was administered intravenously.
