Impact of Cloud Computing Technologies on Pricing Models of Software Firms – Insights from Finland
2014
In this paper we study the changes in the pricing models of software firms that use cloud computing technologies as part of their products and services. This paper presents findings from 324 responses to a questionnaire survey on how pricing model elements of software firms have changed as a result of adopting hardware virtualization, multi-tenancy, online delivery and configurability. The findings suggest that Software-as-a-Service firms – making use of the cloud computing technologies – are generally simplifying their pricing model, increasing the use of usage-based pricing, reducing the customers’ influence and unifying their pricing across customers. These changes occur together with st…
Creating Business Value from Cloud-Based ERP Systems in Small and Medium-Sized Enterprises
2019
Part 11: Modelling and Managing the Digital Enterprise; International audience; This qualitative study focuses on how small- and medium-sized enterprises (SMEs) can realize benefits and create information technology (IT) value by investing in cloud enterprise resource planning (ERP) systems. We interviewed 19 respondents from cloud providers and cloud clients and found that their SMEs experienced both benefits and challenges when implementing cloud ERP systems. The digital value was obtained through work process automatization, fast updates of system functionalities, enhanced security of data storage, and increased access to critical business data from multiple digital units. Challenges in …
Introduction to Software Product Lines: Engineering, Services, and Management Minitrack
2013
Software has become the key asset for competitive products and services in all industries. Thus, competiti¬veness in software development, maintenance, and related ser¬vices has become a concern for organiza¬tions. Competitiveness can be increased through (1) internal strategies such as the strategic crea¬tion and reuse of softwa¬re assets and (2) external strategies such as outsourcing software de¬velopment, maintenance, and/or services from third party service providers and acquiring off-the-shelf components from providers and open source communities. A viable third strategy is to enact both strategies in parallel. This minitrack focuses on the first and third strategy. The minitrack acce…
An Analysis of the Romanian Internet Banking Market from the Perspective of Cloud Computing Services
2013
Abstract The Internet banking today is not something new anymore; all the banks in the Romanian market (and not only) are offering different forms of Internet banking which is ultimately a service in the cloud. In terms of cloud computing, Internet banking represents SaaS for the users, an application which uses Internet for making payments, viewing information, making deposits and so on. In this paper we briefly analyse the Romanian Internet banking market and compare some of the most popular Internet banking platforms. We will also draw some conclusions about this market in the context of the new Cloud computing delivery models.
Building a medical research cloud in the EASI-CLOUDS project
2015
Summary The demand for Information Technology (IT) resources is constantly growing in the scientific area. The ability to store and process increasing amounts of data has transformed many research disciplines like the life sciences, which now rely on complex data processing and data analytics. Cloud computing can provide researchers with scalable and easy-to-use hardware and software resources and allows on-demand access to services, tools, or even complete work environments. The European research project EASI-CLOUDS has developed a service delivery platform with special regard to service integration, monitoring and management, and the negotiation of service level agreements. In order to de…
Which Test Artifacts Testing Service Providers should Reuse and How? Experiences from a Case Study in the Chinese ICT Sourcing Market
2011
Software testing service providers are facing new requirements to shorten service times, lower costs, and increase service customization and quality. Reuse of test artifacts is a possible solution that can help providers to meet the requirements because reuse can improve software quality and productivity. However, the extant literature does not explain in depth which test artifacts should be reused and how. This paper focuses on ICT-enabled sourcing of software testing services in the Chinese market to identify the most important reusable test artifacts. There are two reasons for this research. First, most Chinese service providers are small or medium-sized and have to overcome obstacles su…
Software-as-a-Service in the Telecommunication Industry: Problems and Opportunities
2010
This paper examines the telecommunication software market and the adoption of topical Software-as-a-Service (SaaS) model in this vertical market. The aim of this paper is to estimate which telecommunication software products are likely to be provided as a Service, and to examine the potential factors disallowing SaaS adoption. The set aim is pursued by studying both the supplying software vendors and the communication service providers (CSP) as customers. A set of thematic interviews, software industry statistics and information disclosed by the software vendors are used in the analysis. The results of the analysis reveal challenges in adopting SaaS for telecommunication software as well as…
Current Software-as-a-Service Business Models: Evidence from Finland
2012
This paper characterizes the business models of Software-as-a-Service (SaaS) firms based on their value proposition, customer segments, revenue streams, and customer relationship, and analyzes interconnections of these business model elements. The target set of 163 Finnish SaaS and ASP firms was first compared to other software firms and then clustered into four clusters based on indicator data of their business model elements. The comparison reveals that the SaaS and ASP firms have smaller customer and transaction sizes than software firms in general. The resulting classification reveals two different configurations, a pure-play SaaS model and an enterprise SaaS model, and the typical fact…
Development Platforms as a Niche for Software Companies in Open Source Software
2006
As long as information systems do not become overly large and while they address a well-known domain, they can be controlled by engineering staff. Nevertheless, when dealing with large-scale, complex, or innovative information systems, it can be difficult to separate design issues and to formulate a meaningful information system proposal. In such a context, platforms for software engineering appear to be a promising approach. In this paper, we propose to view development platforms as a major opportunity for Open Source Software and Open Formats.
Scenarios on Adoption of Open Source Software in the Communications Software Industry
2011
We examine the trends and developments affecting the adoption of open source software in the communications software industry. Based on expert interviews and scenario analysis, four alternative and possibly co-existing scenarios are derived. The analysis suggests that communication service providers will mostly deploy open source software in infrastructure software. Alternative developments include use of open source software in launching new services and in cloud computing. The present study is relevant particularly for technology managers considering open source strategies.
