Estimating willingness to pay for desalinated seawater: the case of Djerba Island, Tunisia

2017

AbstractWater scarcity can be a growth-limiting factor. Non-conventional water resources, such as desalinated water, represent an alternative means of guaranteeing access to water while reducing water stress. In this study, a contingent valuation survey carried out in Djerba Island, Tunisia, allows the joint modelling of two decisions: societal support for the construction of a desalination plant and households’ willingness to pay for desalinated water. To the best of the authors’ knowledge, no study to date has addressed this relationship. We find that although a clear majority of households are in favour of using desalinated water, far fewer are willing to pay for it. The article conclude…

New High Voltage Interconnections with Islands in the Mediterranean Sea: Malta and Sicily. Analysis of the Effects on Renewable Energy Sources Integr…

2018

The present paper shows the benefits coming from the operation of the recent electrical high voltage (HV) interconnections between Sicily, Malta and mainland Italy. These new interconnections allow zonal prices of electricity considerably lower than in the past, ensuring greater flexibility to the system and a better integration of Renewable Energy Sources (RES). After briefly illustrating the two high-voltage electrical systems (Sicily and Malta), and having provided a description of the interconnection cable with Malta and its protection devices, the authors hypothesized two modes of operation (Sicily-Malta system islanded or interconnected to the rest of Europe). For the first case (isla…

Health and Social Care Educators’ Competence in Digital Collaborative Learning : A Cross-Sectional Survey

2020

The ongoing change from traditional pedagogy to digital collaborative learning requires a new mode of teaching, learning, and educators’ responsibilities. For competence in digitally mediated teaching, educators need understanding of how to provide appropriate digital environment to learn collectively and individually. The aim of this study was to describe and explore health and social care educators’ perceptions of their current level of competence in digital collaborative learning and identify distinct educators’ profiles. Data were collected via cross-sectional survey from educators in 21 universities of applied science and eight vocational colleges in Finland using an instrument coveri…

Orchestrating 21st century learning in higher education: A perspective on student voice

2016

For universities to meet the 21st-century learning needs of today's students, it is important they allow students to take an active role in developing pedagogy and sharing their perspective. This paper introduces design-based research aiming to develop a pedagogic approach to support technology-enhanced learning practices at the university level with the focus on teacher orchestration of learning activities and student voice. Drawing from the perspectives of teachers and students who participated in a course focused on learning and 21st-century competencies, four main elements indicating student voice and technology-enhanced pedagogy are presented: increased interaction among university com…

Improvement of Media Competence within Cooperative Learning Process in a Vocational Education Institution

2015

Basing on the theoretical formulations concerning the functions and competence of media, as well as cooperative learning the authors developed a model aimed at improvement of media competence of the vocational education institutions’ students. The elaborated model offers teachers in various vocational educational institutions to generate and develop ideas for media competence perfection, ensuring an opportunity in an interdisciplinary project to use the multiform functions of media competence (information, technologies, computer, network, critical and visual) and cooperative learning to ensure efficient learning process. The aim of the article is to analyze the results ob…

Distance Learning – Projecting a Learning Unit. Example of Good Practice

2013

Abstract Distance Learning is a flexible form of university education which focuses on students ‘self-study, the institution which organizes the study programme provides the students with the adequate learning resources. Designing a university course addressed to Distance Learning students represents a key point in the process of education. The purpose of our research is to specify the demands in designing a Distance Learning university course, examining and illustrating each aspect in designing a learning unit with the topic: The Concept of “Stylistic Field”. The learning material is designed according to established objectives, it is accessible, accurate, yet attractive in design, and it …

Direct Instruction vs. Cooperative Learning in Physical Education: Effects on Student Learning, Behaviors, and Subjective Experience

2020

(1) Background: The objective was to analyze if cooperative learning (CL) can have benefits compared to direct instruction (DI) in learning, behavior, and subjective experience of pupils. (2) Methods: An intervention was performed with a counterbalanced within-subjects design. To perform the intervention, 75 schoolchildren aged 10 to 12 from four primary classes were divided into two groups, and two units were taught in each one, namely &ldquo

Risk Perception of COVID-19, Meaning-Based Resources and Psychological Well-Being amongst Healthcare Personnel: The Mediating Role of Coping

2020

The well-being of healthcare personnel during the COVID-19 pandemic depends on the ways in which they perceive the threat posed by the virus, personal resources, and coping abilities. The current study aims to examine the mediating role of coping strategies in the relationship between risk perception of COVID-19 and psychological well-being, as well as the relationship between meaning-based resources and psychological well-being amongst healthcare personnel in southern Poland. Two hundred and twenty-six healthcare personnel who worked in hospitals, outpatient clinics, and medical laboratories during the first few months of the coronavirus pandemic (March–May 2020) filled in questionna…
