IL-21 Regulates the Differentiation of a Human γδ T Cell Subset Equipped with B Cell Helper Activity

Vγ9Vδ2 T lymphocytes recognize nonpeptidic antigens without presentation by MHC molecules and display pleiotropic features. Here we report that coculture of Vγ9Vδ2 cells with phosphoantigen and IL-21 leads to selective expression of the transcription repressor Bcl-6 and polarization toward a lymphocyte subset displaying features of follicular B-helper T (T(FH)) cells. T(FH) like Vγ9Vδ2 cells have a predominant central memory (CD27(+)CD45RA(-)) phenotype and express ICOS, CD40L and CXCR5. Upon antigen activation, they secrete IL-4, IL-10 and CXCL13, and provide B-cell help for antibody production in vitro. Synthesis and antioxidant evaluation of novel silybin analogues

In this work, we evaluated the antioxidant properties of the eight novel silybin analogues for their capacity to scavenge free radicals including superoxide anion radicals and 1,1-diphenyl-2-picrylhydrazyl (DPPH) radicals in vitro. Compound 7d demonstrated an excellent antioxidant effect in scavenging superoxide anion free radical with an IC50 value of 26.5 microM, while the IC50 of quercetin (the reference compound) was 38.1 microM. Compounds 7b, 7e, 7h showed certain scavenging activities for both types of free radicals.

Thermodynamic parameters of the interaction between Co(II) bovine carbonic anhydrase and anionic inhibitors

The pH dependence of the apparent affinity constants of perchlorate for cobalt(II)bovine carbonic anhydrase II has been measured by electronic absorption spectroscopy. The obtained data have been analyzed in terms of the ionization of two acidic groups of CoBCAII, and the affinity of perchlorate for the two water-containing species of the enzyme have been estimated. Furthermore, the affinity constants of nitrate, perchlorate, and azide for CoBCAII in the temperature range 5 degrees C-30 degrees C have been determined by spectrophotometric titrations at pH 7. Nonlinear response of a batch BZ oscillator to the addition of the anionic surfactant sodium dodecyl sulfate.

The response of the Belousov-Zhabotinsy (BZ) system to the addition of increasing amounts of the anionic surfactant sodium dodecyl sulfate (SDS) was monitored at 25.0 degrees C in stirred batch conditions. The presence of SDS in the reaction mixture influences the oscillatory parameters, i.e., induction period and oscillation period, to an extent that depends on the surfactant concentration. Solid state anion–π interactions involving polyhalides

The stabilization of polyhalides in the solid state with the support of electron-deficient pentafluorophenyl groups is described. Furthermore, a synthetic approach towards the sensitive tetraiodide dianion is described and ESI mass spectrometric evidence for its presence in solution is reported.

Five new nickel(II) complexes [Ni(2)L(2)(N(3))(2)(H(2)O)(2)] (1), [Ni(2)L(2)(NO(3))(2)] (2), [Ni(2)L(2)(O(2)CPh)(CH(3)OH)(2)]ClO(4).0.5CH(3)OH (3), [Ni(3)L(2)(O(2)CPh)(4)] (4), and [Ni(2)L(2)(NO(2))(2)](n) (5) have been synthesized by using a tridentate Schiff base ligand, HL (2-[(3-Methylamino-propylimino)-methyl]-phenol), and the polyatomic monoanions N(3)(-), NO(3)(-), PhCOO(-), or NO(2)(-). The complexes have been structurally and magnetically characterized. The structural analysis reveals that in all five complexes, the Ni(II) ions possess a distorted octahedral geometry. 4,6-O-Ethylidine-N-(2-hydroxybenzylidene)-β-D-glucopyranosylamine (H3L1) and N-(5-bromo-2-hydroxybenzylidene-4,6-O-ethylidine-β-D-glucopyranosylamine (H3L2) molecules possessing a–C-1–N=C(H)–moiety for metal-ion binding were synthesized by condensing the 4,6–O–ethylidene–β–D–glucopyranosylamine with salicylaldehyde or 5–bromosalicylaldehyde. Synthesis and antifungal activity of new N-(1-phenyl-4-carbetoxypyrazol-5-yl)-, N-(indazol-3-yl)- and N-(indazol-5-yl)-2-iodobenzamides

N-(1-Phenyl-4-carbetoxypyrazol-5-yl)-, N-(indazol-3-yl)- and N-(indazol-5-yl)-2-iodobenzamides 6, with a Benodanil-like structure, were synthesized by refluxing in acetic acid the corresponding benzotriazinones 5 with potassium iodide for 1 h in order to study the role on the antifungal activity of the N-substitution with an aromatic heterocyclic system on benzamide moiety. Among the tested iododerivatives, compounds 6d,f,g,h possess interesting activities toward some phytopathogenic fungal strains.

Steroidal saponins from the roots of Smilax aspera subsp. mauritanica

Two new steroidal saponins (1, 2) were isolated from the roots of Smilax aspera subsp. mauritanica (POIR.) ARCANG. (Liliaceae), together with the known curillin G (3), asparagoside E (4), asparoside A (5), asparoside B (6) and the phenolic compound resveratrol (7). Their structures were established mainly on the basis of 600 MHz 2D-NMR spectral data. 3 exhibited antifungal activity against the human pathogenic yeasts Candida albicans, C. glabrata and C. tropicalis (minimum inhibitory concentrations of 25, 25 and 50 microg/ml, respectively) whereas the other compounds were inactive.

The determination of antimony and arsenic concentrations in fly ash by hydride generation inductively coupled plasma optical emission spectrometry

Abstract Hydride generation inductively coupled plasma optical emission spectrometry (HG-ICP-OES) was used in the determination of As and Sb concentrations in fly ash samples. The effect of sample pre-treatment reagents and measurement parameters used for hydride generation was evaluated. Due to memory effects observed, the appropriate read delay time was adjusted to 60 s resulting in RSDs 0.6% and 2.3% for As and Sb, respectively. The most suitable volumes of pre-reduction reagents for 10 mL of sample were 4 mL of KI/ascorbic acid (5%) and 6 mL of HCl (conc.).
