The distribution constants of vitamin E partitioned between apolar organic phase and water-containing reversed micelles of sodium bis (2-ethylhexyl) sulfosuccinate (AOT), didodecyldimethylammonium bromide (DDAB), soybean phosphatidylcholine (lecithin) and tetraethylene glycol monododecyl ether (C12E4) have been evaluated by a spectrophotometric method. The Mediterranean tunicate Stolonica socialis contains a new class of powerful cytotoxic acetogenins, generically named stolonoxides. In this paper, which also details the isolation and chemical characterization of a minor component (3a) of the tunicate extract, we report the potent inhibitory activity (IC(50) < 1 microM) of stolonoxides (1a and 3a) on mitochondrial electron transfer. The compounds affect specifically the functionality of complex II (succinate:ubiquinone oxidoreductase) and complex III (ubiquinol:cytochrome C oxidoreductase) in mammalian cells, thereby causing a rapid collapse of the whole energetic metabolism. In this study, methodologies for determining titanium oxide, zinc oxide and iron oxide are proposed and assayed in commercial sunscreen products. The proposed methodology for TiO2, determination in sunscreens is based on a microwave-assisted treatment for digesting the organic components in a closed teflon reactor in presence of HNO3 and HCl. Titanium is determined by inductive coupled plasma emission spectrometry (ICP-AES). The all-(E)-configured tetrastilbenylmethanes 3a−e and 5a,b can be obtained by fourfold Wittig−Horner reactions. The tetrahedral arrangement of these compounds guarantees independent stilbenoid chromophores with a high chromophore density. Abstract We compare two formalisms applied to the vibrational modes of the molecule of AsH 3 of C 3 v molecular symmetry group. Indeed, the close stretching modes of this molecule may be considered as those of a three-dimensional oscillator whereas the bending modes may be considered either as a one-dimensional oscillator of symmetry A 1 and a two-dimensional oscillator of symmetry E or as an approximate three-dimensional oscillator. We previously isolated a mutant cell that is the only mammalian cell reported to have a persistently low level of UDP-glucose. In this work we obtained a spontaneous revertant whose UDP-glucose level lies between those found in the wild type and the mutant cell. The activity of UDP-glucose pyrophosphorylase (UDPG:PP), the enzyme that catalyzes the formation of UDP-glucose, was in the mutant 4% and in the revertant 56% of the activity found in the wild type cell. Sequence analysis of UDPG: PP cDNAs from the mutant cell showed one missense mutation, which changes amino acid residue 115 from glycine to aspartic acid.
