Design Procedures for Soil-Lime Stabilization for Road and Railway Embankments. Part 2-Experimental Validation

2012

AbstractAs detailed in Part 1, the most common Italian Technical Specifications refer to different design methodologies for design of lime-soil mixtures, some being quite different from those internationally adopted. Therefore, it seemed appropriate to the Authors to compare these methodologies, via a wide experimental program. It is shown that the Italian methodology of the National Road Agency is different not only from those used in Italy, but also from the main international standards. The experimental results highlight that a revision of that methodology is needed in order to bring it into line with what is prescribed by the European standard.

Application of solid-phase microextraction for determining phenylurea herbicides and their homologous anilines from vegetables.

2004

Abstract Residues of metobromuron, monolinuron and linuron herbicides and their aniline homologous were analyzed in carrots, onions and potatoes by solid-phase microextraction (SPME) performed with a polyacrylate fiber. A juice was obtained from food samples that were further diluted, and an aliquot was extracted after sodium chloride (14%) addition and pH control. At pH 4 only the phenylureas were extracted. A new extraction at pH 11 allowed the extraction of phenylureas plus homologous aniline metabolites. Determination was carried out by gas chromatography with nitrogen–phosporus detection (NPD) the identity of the determined compounds was studied by gas chromatography–mass spectrometry.…

Multiple linear regression analysis of RF values of chlorinated catechols and guaiacols

1981

The multiple linear regression analysis of the RF values of chlorinated catechols and guaiacols has been carried out. The resolved terms, in the regression equation have been used to explain the relative mobility of chlorinated compounds to the reference compound (catechol or guaiacol). The best correlations have been observed for solvent systems which give the greatest standard deviations and relative differences between the RF values. A good correlation between the standard deviation of the RF values and the term which represents the effect of the chlorine atom ortho to the hydroxyl group(s) have also been observed.

On-line sample treatment and FT-IR determination of doxylamine succinate in pharmaceuticals

2005

Abstract A low solvent consumption method for Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy (FT-IR) determination of doxylamine succinate in pharmaceuticals has been developed. The analyte was continuous and selectively extracted with a 13% (v/v) ethanol:chloroform solvent mixture, recirculating the solvent through the sample and monitoring the process by FT-IR. Doxylamine succinate was determined by on-line standard addition measuring the peak area in the regions 1730–1710 and 1485–1462 cm −1 corrected with a two-point baseline established between 2000 and 1800 cm −1 . This new method implies low volumes of chloroformic solvent mixture, only 2.6 mL per sample, in front of classical batch FT-IR m…

Curative therapies are superior to standard of care (transarterial chemoembolization) for intermediate stage hepatocellular carcinoma.

2017

Background and aims the Barcelona Clinic Liver Cancer intermediate stage (BCLC-B) of hepatocellular carcinoma (HCC) includes extremely heterogeneous patients in terms of tumor burden and liver function. Transarterial-chemoembolization (TACE) is the first-line treatment for these patients although it may be risky/useless for someone, while others could undergo curative treatments. This study assesses the treatment type performed in a large cohort of BCLC-B patients and its outcome. Methods retrospective analysis of 485 consecutive BCLC-B patients from the ITA.LI.CA database diagnosed with naive HCC after 1999. Patients were stratified by treatment. Results 29 patients (6%) were lost to follo…

Application of matrix solid-phase dispersion to the determination of a new generation of fungicides in fruits and vegetables.

2002

A method based on matrix solid-phase dispersion (MSPD) and gas chromatography to determine eight fungicides in fruits and vegetables is described. Fungicide residues were identified and quantified using nitrogen-phosphorus detection and electron-capture detection connected in parallel and confirmed by mass spectrometric detection. The method required 0.5 g of sample, C18 bonded silica as dispersant sorbent, silica as clean-up sorbent and ethyl acetate as eluting solvent. Recoveries from spiked orange, apple, tomato, artichoke, carrot and courgette samples ranged from 62 to 102% and relative standard deviations were less than 15% in the concentration range 0.05-10 mg kg(-1). Detection and qu…

Reduced graphene oxide-based magnetic composite for trace determination of polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons in cosmetics by stir bar sorptive dispers…

2020

This work describes a sensitive and rapid analytical method for trace determination of polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons (PAHs) in cosmetic samples. The proposed method is based on stir bar sorptive-dispersive microextraction (SBSDME). A magnetic composite made of CoFe2O4 magnetic nanoparticles embedded into reduced graphene oxide sheets is used as sorbent phase. After the extraction, the target analytes are desorbed in toluene and then analyzed by gas chromatography-mass spectrometry (GC-MS). The main parameters involved in the extraction procedure (i.e., composite amount, extraction time and desorption time) were evaluated and optimized to provide the best extraction efficiency. The method…

Technical Note: Airborne Sound Insulation of Hollow Brickwork

2007

This paper reports on the uncertainty of in situ measurements of the airborne sound insulation of hollow-brick walls in different housing plans, with emphasis on the influence of expansion joints. The mean and standard deviation of multiple measurements are obtained, which show significant differences in insulation values despite the fact that the same construction was used in each case.

Special factors and the combinatorics of suffix and factor automata

2011

AbstractThe suffix automaton (resp. factor automaton) of a finite word w is the minimal deterministic automaton recognizing the set of suffixes (resp. factors) of w. We study the relationships between the structure of the suffix and factor automata and classical combinatorial parameters related to the special factors of w. We derive formulae for the number of states of these automata. We also characterize the languages LSA and LFA of words having respectively suffix automaton and factor automaton with the minimal possible number of states.

Determination of dithiocarbamates and metabolites in plants by liquid chromatography–mass spectrometry

2004

Abstract A quantitative matrix solid-phase dispersion and liquid chromatography–atmospheric pressure chemical ionization mass spectrometry (LC–APCI–MS) method is outlined for the simultaneous analysis of dithiocarbamates (DTCs) and their degradation products in plants. Compounds analyzed are dazomet, disulfiram, thiram and the metabolites ethylenthiourea and propylenthiourea. The performance of two different sample preparation protocols, the proposed one and other based on solid-phase extraction, as well as, of both atmospheric pressure ionization sources, APCI and electrospray, were compared. The effect of several parameters on the extraction, separation and detection was studied. Dithioca…
