Computer Simulations of the Electric Interactions between the Phospholipid Head-Groups and Ionic Admixtures in the Membrane Surface

2001

Some phospholipids (e.g. lecithin) form a system of electric dipoles on the membrane surface layer. In the case of lecithin the positive dipole charge is located on the choline and the negative one on the phosphoric molecule group. These dipoles are arranged almost parallel to the membrane surface. Taking the dipole membrane structure as a base for further investigations, a computer model of the electrostatic interaction between the dipole system and the ionic admixture was investigated. The model presumes hexagonal centered or a rectangular flat geometry of the 121 dipoles distribution. The dipoles may rotate freely around round the motionless symmetry axis perpendicular to the system surf…

Photomagnetism of a Series of Dinuclear Iron(II) Complexes

2009

International audience; The photomagnetic properties of a series of [{Fe(NCS)(py-X)}2(bpypz)2] (NCS=thiocyanate, py=pyridine, X=4-Mepy, py, 3-Mepy, 3-Clpy and 3-Brpy, and bpypz=3,5-bis(pyridine-2-yl)pyazolate) binuclear complexes are close to the antiferromagnetic response of [{Fe(NCS)(3,5-dmpy)}3(bpypz)2] (3,5-dmpy=3,5-dimethylpyrazine), which is characterised by two iron(II) metal ions in a high-spin (HS) electronic configuration . This paper describes the photomagnetic properties of a series of binuclear iron(II) complexes belonging to the [{Fe(NCS)(py-X)}2(bpypz)2] family (NCS=thiocyanate; py=pyridine; bpypz=3,5-bis(pyridine-2-yl)pyrazolate; and py-X=4-Mepy (1), py (3), 3-Mepy (4), 3-Cl…

Cariostatic effect of a light-cured, resin-reinforced glass-ionomer for bonding orthodontic brackets in vivo

1998

The aim of this study was to evaluate in vivo the cariostatic potential of the resin-reinforced glass-ionomer (Vitremer core build-up restorative; 3M Dental Product Division) when used as a bonding agent for orthodontic brackets. The mineral distribution and topography of the enamel surface adjacent to the bracket base was determined by quantitative microradiography (TMR) and confocal laser scanning microscopy (CLSM). The study was designed in split-mouth technique using 9 pairs of premolars to be extracted for orthodontic reasons. One tooth of each pair was bonded with the resin-reinforced glass-ionomer, and the control contralateral premolar with the non-fluoridated composite (Concise, 3M…

Zur kinetik des einstellvorganges im osmometer. III. Versuche mit fraktionen definierten molekulargewichts an ultracellafiltern verschiedener durchlä…

1961

Cavitation corrosion and repassivation kinetics of titanium in a heavy brine LiBr solution evaluated by using electrochemical techniques and Confocal…

2011

The cavitation corrosion behaviour of commercially pure Grade 2 titanium in a 992 g/l LiBr solution has been investigated at 25 °C using an ultrasound device. Cavitation was found to have more influence on the anodic branch than on the cathodic branch, shifting the corrosion potential, Ecorr, and the OCP value towards more negative potentials, and increasing the corrosion current density, icorr, by six times. The repassivation kinetics of Grade 2 titanium have also been studied in the 992 g/l LiBr solution, at 25 °C and various applied potentials, using cavitation to damage the electrode surface. The repassivation kinetics have been analysed in terms of the current density flowing from the …

Metrological characterization and operating principle identification of static meters for reactive energy: an experimental approach under nonsinusoid…

2009

In this paper, an experimental approach is proposed for the metrological characterization of the static meters for reactive energy and for the individuation of their operating principle in nonsinusoidal conditions. The proposed approach was developed by starting from the only available accuracy test condition in the presence of the harmonics introduced by the standards for active static meters. In this paper, the proposed approach is described, and some experimental tests are presented, which were performed on some meters of different accuracy classes and with both known and unknown operating principles.

The Measurement of Reactive Energy in Polluted Distribution Power Systems: An Analysis of the Performance of Commercial Static Meters

2008

This paper presents a comparative analysis of the performances of both a traditional induction meter and various types of commercial static meters for reactive energy in the presence of harmonic distortion. This is a topical issue, since there are several types of static meters on the market, based on different principles of construction. In accordance with current standards, these meters are designed to operate in sinusoidal conditions and their performance is not tested in the presence of harmonic distortion. However, with the increase of pollution levels in power systems, the meters may be used even in the presence of distorted voltages and/or currents; in such cases, their accuracy may …

Brain stimulation in migraine

2013

Migraine is a very prevalent disease with great individual disability and socioeconomic burden. Despite intensive research effort in recent years, the etiopathogenesis of the disease remains to be elucidated. Recently, much importance has been given to mechanisms underlying the cortical excitability that has been suggested to be dysfunctional in migraine. In recent years, noninvasive brain stimulation techniques based on magnetic fields (transcranial magnetic stimulation, TMS) and on direct electrical currents (transcranial direct current stimulation, tDCS) have been shown to be safe and effective tools to explore the issue of cortical excitability, activation, and plasticity in migraine. M…

In vivo manipulation of Vgamma9Vdelta2 T cells with zoledronate and low-dose interleukin-2 for immunotherapy of advanced breast cancer patients.

2010

The potent anti-tumour activities of gamma delta T cells have prompted the development of protocols in which gamma delta-agonists are administered to cancer patients. Encouraging results from small Phase I trials have fuelled efforts to characterize more clearly the application of this approach to unmet clinical needs such as metastatic carcinoma. To examine this approach in breast cancer, a Phase I trial was conducted in which zoledronate, a V gamma 9V delta 2 T cell agonist, plus low-dose interleukin (IL)-2 were administered to 10 therapeutically terminal, advanced metastatic breast cancer patients. Treatment was well tolerated and promoted the effector maturation of V gamma 9V delta 2 T …

Statistical model of the transverse ply cracking in cross-ply laminates by strength and fracture toughness based failure criteria

2008

Cross-ply laminate subjected to tensile loading provides a relatively well understood and widely used model system for studying progressive cracking of the transverse ply. This test allows to identify material strength and/or toughness characteristics as well as to establish relation between damage level and the composite stiffness reduction. The transverse ply cracking is an inherently stochastic process due to the random variability of local material properties of the plies. The variability affects both crack initiation (governed by the local strength) and propagation (governed by the local fracture toughness). The primary aim of the present study is elucidation of the relative importance…
