Green technologies for food processing: Principal considerations
2019
Abstract The environmental impact of the food industry is of increasing concern for our society. Reductions in the amounts of harmful substances produced and in energy consumption, and increases in by-product recycling, are all requirements that the industry must now meet. However, “green technology” concepts are currently driving the development of new techniques in this field. Emerging green technologies are capable of superseding conventional thermal treatment, which negatively affects the physical, nutritional, and bioactive properties of food, and are also more environmentally friendly. Novel green techniques include ionizing and ultraviolet radiation, ohmic heating, high-power ultraso…
Valorization of waste and by-products from food industries through the use of innovative technologies
2020
Abstract Food waste and by-products, which are normally regarded as not being valuable, have great potential for valuable compounds production. Valorization of these materials not only means more nutrients or bioactive compounds, but also addresses environmental issues caused by discarding these “waste” materials. This chapter discusses the nutritive and economic potential of food waste and by-products, as well as the application of innovative technologies (i.e., electrotechnologies, ultrasound, high hydrostatic pressure, nanotechnology, pressurized fluids) in food waste and by-products valorization. Such technologies improve the perspectives regarding waste utilization, paving the ways tow…
Study of interface formation during diffusion bonding : compact heat exchangers application
2014
Compact diffusion bonded heat exchangers are an attractive option in many fields (nuclear, (petro-)chemistry, solar…) due to their performance. This type of concept is especially intended for manufacturing the energy conversion system of the ASTRID reactor. During diffusion bonding by HIP, the problem is twofold: the channel deformation and microstructure evolution must be controlled, while at the same time, highly resistant interfaces are desired. This thesis is focused on the understanding and the control of the bonded components microstructure prepared by HIP in order to define « process » criteria to achieve welds in agreement with specifications of components containing fluidic channel…

Reduction of beauvericin and enniatins bioaccessibility by prebiotic compounds, evaluated in static and dynamic simulated gastrointestinal digestion
2015
Abstract The aim of this study was to investigate the bioaccessibility of beauvericin (BEA) and enniatins (ENs) present in wheat crispy breads. A microbial fermentation was performed by a BEA- and ENs-producer Fusarium strain, adding inulin and fructooligosaccharides (FOS) at two concentrations (1% and 5%). The bioaccessibility of mycotoxins was determined by static and dynamic simulated gastrointestinal digestion systems, imitating the digestive physiological conditions until the colonic compartment. BEA and ENs were determined in the intestinal fluids by liquid chromatography-tandem mass spectrometry (LC-MS/MS). BEA and ENs bioaccessibilities in the static model (46.7–61.1% and 6.2–44.9%,…
Evaluation of Fungistatic Activity of Eight Selected Essential Oils on Four Heterogeneous Fusarium Isolates Obtained from Cereal Grains in Southern P…
2020
The aim of the study was to determine the relationship between the chemical composition of eight commercial essential oils (EsO) (garlic, grapefruit, lemon grass, tea tree, thyme, verbena, cajeput, and Litsea cubeba) and their fungistatic activity in relation to four species of Fusarium: F. avenaceum, F. culmorum, F. graminearum, and F. oxysporum. The species identification of Fusarium isolates was confirmed by matrix-assisted laser desorption/ionization time-of-flight (MALDI-TOF) mass spectrometer. The determination of qualitative and quantitative chemical composition of the EsO was carried out using the gas chromatography&ndash
Test con palmare e correzione EGNOS
2010
Static Test with GPS, Glonass and EGNOS Receivers
2012
In this work the author show the results of testing conducted in last few years within the network of University of Palermo called UNIPA NRTK GNSS. The University of Palermo, in order to carry out scientific tests on the use of CORS networks for real time positioning, have realized a network of reference stations. The network was set up during a National Research Scientific Project entitled: "Networks of permanent GPS stations for survey in real time control and use of emergency" and was the first made in Sicily for scientific GNSS-NRTK research but is also used for topographic and cartographic applications. The goal of the work is to verify the reliability of the network infrastructure (su…
Consensus report from the 9th International Forum for Liver Magnetic Resonance Imaging: applications of gadoxetic acid-enhanced imaging
2021
Abstract Objectives The 9th International Forum for Liver Magnetic Resonance Imaging (MRI) was held in Singapore in September 2019, bringing together radiologists and allied specialists to discuss the latest developments in and formulate consensus statements for liver MRI, including the applications of gadoxetic acid–enhanced imaging. Methods As at previous Liver Forums, the meeting was held over 2 days. Presentations by the faculty on days 1 and 2 and breakout group discussions on day 1 were followed by delegate voting on consensus statements presented on day 2. Presentations and discussions centered on two main meeting themes relating to the use of gadoxetic acid–enhanced MRI in primary l…
A critical review on the implementation of static data sampling techniques to detect network attacks
2021
International audience; Given that the Internet traffic speed and volume are growing at a rapid pace, monitoring the network in a real-time manner has introduced several issues in terms of computing and storage capabilities. Fast processing of traffic data and early warnings on the detected attacks are required while maintaining a single pass over the traffic measurements. To palliate these problems, one can reduce the amount of traffic to be processed by using a sampling technique and detect the attacks based on the sampled traffic. Different parameters have an impact on the efficiency of this process, mainly, the applied sampling policy and sampling ratio. In this paper, we investigate th…
