Lateral force microscopy of multiwalled carbon nanotubes

Carbon nanotubes are usually imaged with the atomic force microscope (AFM) in non-contact mode. However, in many applications, such as mechanical manipulation or elasticity measurements, contact mode is used. The forces affecting the nanotube are then considerable and not fully understood. In this work lateral forces were measured during contact mode imaging with an AFM across a carbon nanotube. We found that, qualitatively, both magnitude and sign of the lateral forces to the AFM tip were independent of scan direction and can be concluded to arise from the tip slipping on the round edges of the nanotube. Damage Identification of Beams Using Static Test Data

A damage identification procedure for beams under static loads is presented. Damage is modelled through a damage distribution function which determines a variation of the beam stiffness with respect to a reference condition. Using the concept of the equivalent superimposed deformation, the equations governing the static problem are recast in a Fredholm’s integral equation of the second kind in terms of bending moments. The solution of this equation is obtained through an iterative procedure as well as in closed form. The effectiveness of different non-linear static procedures, for the detection of the collapse mechanism of eccentric braced frames, is investigated. EBFs introduced into truss frame structures are considered. Potential and energy of oblate spheroidal charge distributions

Abstract The Poisson equation for a large class of charge distributions contained within oblate spheroids in solved and their energies are obtained. In many cases, the potential and the energy can be found by comparison with the solutions of the Poisson equation for prolate spheroidal charge distributions obtained in preceding works. The limits of validity of this comparison procedure are established. For the simplest cases the electrostatic energy is computed and, after suitable normalization, displayed graphically.

Abstract The properties of an ordinary ion guide can be improved by inserting a grid between the nozzle and the skimmer. When positive ions are transported, an electric potential lower than +10 V is connected to the grid and one of the order of − 10 V to the skimmer. Efficient focusing is achieved between the nozzle and the grid by a combined action of the viscous helium flow field and the weak electric field. The focusing device is called a “squeezer”. Single-Event Effects in the Peripheral Circuitry of a Commercial Ferroelectric Random Access Memory

International audience; This paper identifies the failure modes of a commercial 130-nm ferroelectric random access memory. The devices were irradiated with heavy-ion and pulsed focused X-ray beams. Various failure modes are observed, which generate characteristic error patterns, affecting isolated bits, words, groups of pages, and sometimes entire regions of the memory array. The underlying mechanisms are discussed.
Methodologies for the Statistical Analysis of Memory Response to Radiation

International audience; Methodologies are proposed for in-depth statistical analysis of Single Event Upset data. The motivation for using these methodologies is to obtain precise information on the intrinsic defects and weaknesses of the tested devices, and to gain insight on their failure mechanisms, at no additional cost. The case study is a 65 nm SRAM irradiated with neutrons, protons and heavy ions. This publication is an extended version of a previous study.
