Is 5-ASA Still the Treatment of Choice for Ulcerative Colitis?

2010

5-Amino-salacylic acid (5-ASA) is up to now the treatment of choice in the induction and maintenance of remission of mild-to-moderate ulcerative colitis (UC). Sulfasalazine, despite similar efficacy, is hampered by more side effects, but in presence of peripheral arthopaties it remains the treatment of choice. The new delayed release MMX formulation seems to be promising in reducing compliance problems, but further studies are warranted to show the superiority of new MMX formulation compared with the older formulations of 5-ASA. Some trials evaluated also the efficacy and safety of once-daily dosing of older 5-ASA formulations in maintenance of remission, finding a greater adherence to ther…

Dexamethasone in severe head injuries

1979

The results of a double-blind-study on the effects of placebo, a low dose and a high dose of dexamethasone on severe closed head injury are presented. 95 patients were selected and carefully analyzed according to mortality, neurological course and symptoms, midbrain lesions and final outcome. The results demonstrate that dexamethasone, particularly given in high doses, reduces mortality and improves the neurological course. The steroid treatment seems to improve chances as well as quality of survival. Apart from the dose, timing of administration is of great importance.

Measurement of exhaled nitric oxide: comparison of 3 different analyzers

2018

Exhaled nitric oxide (FeNO) is used as a surrogate marker to monitor airway inflammation. Aim of this study was to compare the new FeNO analyzer Vivatmo pro from Bosch (BV) with the Niox Vero from Circassia (CN) and the CLD from Ecomedics (EC). In 106 asthma patients (median age 54 years (range 20-87), 60 % female, median ACT of 16, 85 % on inhaled corticosteroids (mean 1300 μg BDP), 36 % on therapy with biologics) 2 FeNO measurements per patient and per device were performed using each analyzer in a random sequence according to the ATS / ERS guidelines. Additionally, the success rate to achieve a valid NO value was evaluated. 70 % of the patients had FeNO values In conclusion, for the rang…

Determination of Nuclear Prostatic Androgen Receptors by FPLC (Fast Protein Liquid Chromatography)

1987

The experimental detection of steroid receptors, quantitative as well as qualitative, has been received with wide-spread interest in the research of the various effects of steroid hormones during recent years. The quantitative measurement of cyto- and karyoplasmatic prostatic androgen receptors, carried out through such methods as the Dextran-Coated-Charcoal-Method (DCC) (Snochowsky et al. 1977), the gradient centrifugation method (Mainwaring and Milroy 1975; Menon et al. 1978) or the Hydroxyl-apatite process (Murthy et al. 1984; Pavlik and Coulson 1976), represent unprecise or complicated analytical processes, which are due to technical factors, such as proteolytical degradation, the time …

Calcium inhibits ovarian steroidogenesis in the blowfly Phormia regina.

2002

1479-6805 0022-0795; Calcium is frequently involved in the stimulation of steroidogenesis in gonads and endocrine glands, generally in association with cAMP. However, our present observations show that it has the opposite effect in the ovary of the blowfly Phormia regina. Our in vitro experiments first showed that extracellular calcium does not play a role during the stimulation of steroidogenesis in fly ovaries; indeed steroidogenesis was activated in vitro as efficiently in a medium with or without calcium, either by pharmacological compounds mimicking cAMP signaling or by active brain extracts. When calcium was experimentally introduced into biosynthetic cells by ionophores or liberated …

Influence of hydrocortisone on chick embryo retina development

1987

Treatment of chick embryos in ovo with hydrocortisone-21-phosphate (a single dose of 150 micrograms) caused a marked reduction of retinal thymidine kinase activity 24 h later. The inhibitory effect was highest (65-70%) in 8-10-day-old embryos and declined with age, disappearing after day 15. It was accompanied by a reduction in thickness of the retinal layers. Adrenocorticotropic hormone (ACTH) treatment (10 micrograms daily for 2 days) also produced an age-dependent inhibitory effect on retinal thymidine kinase, whereas treatment with a single dose of 200 micrograms of metopirone, a compound that prevents the 11 beta-hydroxylation of steroid molecules in the adrenal glands, impeded the dec…

Risk Factors for Rate of Relapse and Effects of Steroid Maintenance Therapy in Patients With Autoimmune Pancreatitis: Systematic Review and Meta-anal…

2019

Background & Aims: Risk for relapse after induction of remission with steroid therapy has been studied extensively in patients with autoimmune pancreatitis (AIP), but findings have been equivocal. We performed a systematic review and meta-analysis to estimate the relapse rate of AIP after initial remission after steroid treatment and to identify factors associated with relapse. Methods: Three reviewers searched MEDLINE, SCOPUS, and EMBASE until July 2018 to identify studies on rate of relapse of AIP after induction of remission with steroid therapy. A pooled estimate was calculated using the DerSimonian and Laird method for a random-effects model. This study was conducted in accordance …

Control of ovarian steroidogenesis by insulin-like peptides in the blowfly (Phormia regina).

2004

0022–0795/04/0181–147; This study investigated the ability of insulin and of insect insulin-like peptides (ILPs) to stimulate ovarian steroidogenesis in the blowfly Phormia regina. Bovine insulin was active on ovaries isolated in vitro, which showed an age-dependent sensitivity; this peptide progressively stimulated steroidogenesis in ovaries isolated from the third day after adult molt, but not in younger ones, and had maximal activity after the fifth day. This stimulatory effect was observed equally from females reared in the presence or in the absence of males, excluding a regulatory effect of mating. The mode of action of insulin in blowflies did not involve cAMP, but triggered a specif…
