Estradiol, progesterone, 17-hydroxyprogesterone, androstenedione and CA125 in patients with ovarian carcinoma.

Estradiol, progesterone, 17-hydroxyprogesterone, androstenedione and CA125 were assayed in 25 women (12 oophorectomized before entering the study) with ovarian carcinoma. The data from patients were ordered according to the presence or absence of the gonads. The patients with ovaries (Group A) showed significantly higher levels of estradiol (p less than 0.01), progesterone (p less than 0.01) and 17-hydroxyprogesterone (p less than 0.01) than controls. This difference was not observed between oophorectomized patients (Group B) and controls. The role of APA excess in determining or causing PCOS is unclear, although observations in patients with inherited APA excess (e.g., patients with 21-hydroxylase deficient congenital classic or non-classic adrenal hyperplasia) demonstrate that APA excess can result in a PCOS-like phenotype. Growing evidence suggests that exposure to bisphenol A (BPA) has the ability to disrupt several different stages of oocyte development. To date, most attention has focused on the effects of BPA on the periovulatory oocyte, and considerable variation is evident in the results of these studies. A conservative treatment for chronic obstructive sialoadenitis by intraductal instillation of mucolytic, steroids and antibiotic solution

Abstract Purposes Reporting our experience in treating chronic obstructive sialadenitis with a protocol consisting of sialoendoscopy and intraductal instillation of antibiotics, steroids and n-acetyl-cysteine (NAC) solution. Methods Prospective study of patients with chronic obstructive sialadenitis with no apparent lithiasic obstructions, with recurrent non-lithiasic sialoadenitis and patients with lithiasic sialoadenitis not solved with sialoendoscopy. Adverse Effects of Nonsteroidal Anti-Inflammatory Drugs on the Small and Large Bowel

Nonsteroidal anti-inflammatory drugs (NSAID) account for a large part of prescriptions and self-administered medication worldwide. The adverse effects on the upper gastrointestinal tract are well documented. However, in an increasing number of publications adverse effects in the small and large intestine distal to the duodenum are being reported. This paper provides an updated review of current as well as earlier literature on the pathogenesis of such adverse effects and the potential damage to the small and large bowel caused by NSAID. In addition, suggestions for an appropriate diagnostic workup of NSAID damage are discussed.

For the first time it has been proven that cholest-4-ene-3-one is an endogenous constituent of adrenal tissue. Concentrations of cholestenone in quartered rat adrenals after 3 hours of in vitro incubation were comparable to those of progesterone. However, from specific radioactivities of tissue cholesterol and progesterone and from those of tissue cholestenone and progesterone after incubations with either 4-14C-cholesterol or 4-14C-cholestenone it has been concluded that, at best, cholestenone plays a minimal role as a C27-intermediate of corticosteroid biosynthesis.
