The Anabasis of Patrick: Travelling an allegorical narrative map of illness and disability

Abstract Objectives This paper examines the stories of Patrick, a man living with cancer and a spinal cord injury. Design An intrinsic case study was used to address Patrick's experiences. The design of the study is underpinned by narrative dialogism. Method Photo-elicitation interviews were conducted. Visual and verbal data were analysed using a dialogical narrative analysis. Results Patrick aligned his experiences with a story titled Anabasis to organize and express them. Although Anabasis is not a story about illness, it provides Patrick with an allegorical narrative map of how to live with disability and survive illness. Between the idea and the construction of the architecture the drawing plays a central role to connect the different protagonists of a project. It involves the community by envisaging unprecedented perspectives. Writing is useful to explicit the graphics and establish a new order in the design reasoning. The relationships between signs and meanings multiply in recent information systems in which it seems possible to conclude a lot (thanks to numerical and spatial data) but sometimes a synthesis is missing though that synthesis is fundamental to create new physical experiences. For the exploration of the use of different architectural languages and for the push towards the project rather than a sterile cataloging the case of the Piano Programma for the historic center of Palermo (Giuseppe Samonà Giancarlo De Carlo Umberto Di Cristina Anna Maria Sciarra Borzí 1979-82) reveals to be ambitious. Giuseppe Samonà integrates the classical representation based on Monge's projections with photographs and iconic drawings associating signs with a linguistic-structural communication capable of expressing the relationships between the parts at the basis of a morphological approach to the plan. The graphic story ("second language") of the urban fabric has creative implications expressed by images and annotations ("first language") useful for decoding them. Since the plan focuses on the potential of a storytelling that orients the imagination of its readers (designers citizens politicians) it can contribute to the study titled "B4R– BRANDING 4 RESILIENCE - Tourist infrastructure as a tool to enhance small villages by drawing resilient communities and new open habitats” as a starting point for the mapping in which GIS analysis and multidisciplinary data (geometric topological and quantitative) relating to some villages of the internal Sicily shall translate into a new architectural urban and landscape quality.Settore ICAR/14 - Composizione Architettonica E Urbana

Social Practices based characters in a Robotic Storytelling System

In this work, we present a robotic storytelling system, where the characters have been modelled as cognitive agents embodied in Pepper and NAO robots. The characters have been designed by exploiting the ACT-R architecture, taking into account knowledge, behaviours, norms, and expectations typical of social practices and desires resulting from their personality. The characters explain their reasoning processes during the narration, through a sort of internal dialogue that generate a high level of credibility experienced over the audience.

Exploiting Cognitive Architectures to design Storytelling Activities for NarRob

In this work, we exploited the potential of a cognitive architecture to model the characters of a story in an interactive storytelling system. The system is accessible through NarRob, a humanoid social robot, able to manage storytelling activities aimed at improving the emotional and social skills of children, also adding expressiveness to the narration by using proper associate gestures and emotional expressions. The motivational appeal of interactive storytelling: Towards a dimensional model of the user experience

A conceptual account to the quality of the user experience that interactive storytelling intends to facilitate is introduced. Building on socialscientific research from `old' entertainment media, the experiential qualities of curiosity, suspense, aesthetic pleasantness, self-enhancement, and optimal task engagement ("flow") are proposed as key elements of a theory of user experience in interactive storytelling. Perspectives for the evolution of the model, research and application are briefly discussed.

Well-designed, well-told stories can help others learn from past situations to respond more effectively in future situation.
