Treatment of a submerged anaerobic membrane bioreactor (SAnMBR) effluent by an activated sludge system: the role of sulphide and thiosulphate in the …

2014

This work studies the use of a well-known and spread activated sludge system (UCT configuration) to treat the effluent of a submerged anaerobic membrane bioreactor (SAnMBR) treating domestic waste-water. Ammonia, phosphate, dissolved methane and sulphide concentrations in the SAnMBR effluent were around 55 mg NH4-N L-1, 7 mg PO4-P L-1, 30 mg non-methane biodegradable COD L-1, and 105 mg S2- L-1 respectively. The results showed a nitrification inhibition caused by the presence of sulphur compounds at any of the solids retention time (SRT) studied (15,20 and 25 days). This inhibition could be overcome increasing the hydraulic retention time (HRT) from 13 to 26 h. Among the sulphur compounds, …

Isotopic composition of dissolved sulphate and hydrogen sulphide from some thermal springs of Sicily

1982

Samples of some thermal springs from Sicily have been analysed for the isotopic composition of sulphur-bearing species. The values of δ34S(SO42− (range: +7.3, +31.7‰), δ34S(H2S) (range: −12.2, +27.8), δ34S(S°) (range: +1.9, +24.5) and δ18O(SO42−) (range: −2.5, +23.9) obtained show such a remarkable variability in data as to hypothesize different genetic processes concerning these species. Furthermore, from the available experimental data, the relationship between the isotopic composition of the sulphur in the dissolved sulphate and in the associated hydrogen sulphide (ΔSO42− - H2S = 25 – 30‰) seems to indicate the bacterial reduction of sulphate ion as one of the processes most significantl…

Sediment characteristics and macrofauna distribution along a human-modified inlet in the Gulf of Oristano (Sardinia, Italy)

2007

We studied the spatial variability and within-year temporal changes in hydrological features, grain size composition and chemical characteristics of sediments, as well as macrofaunal assemblages, along a heavily modified inlet in the Gulf of Oristano (western Sardinia, Italy). The inlet connects the Cabras lagoon to the gulf through a series of convoluted creeks and man-made structures, including a dam and fish barriers built in the last three decades. Sediments were muddy and mainly composed of the "non-sortable" fraction (i.e., < 8 mu m particle size) in all four areas investigated: Lagoon, Creeks, Channel and Seaward. Along the inlet, however, the ratio between the < 8 mu mn and the 8-64…

Short and long-term experiments on the effect of sulphide on microalgae cultivation in tertiary sewage treatment.

2017

[EN] Microalgae cultivation appears to be a promising technology for treating nutrient-rich effluents from anaerobic membrane bioreactors, as microalgae are able to consume nutrients from sewage without an organic carbon source, although the sulphide formed during the anaerobic treatment does have negative effects on microalgae growth. Short and long-term experiments were carried out on the effects of sulphide on a mixed microalgae culture. The short-term experiments showed that the oxygen production rate (OPR) dropped as sulphide concentration increased: a concentration of 5 mg S L¿1 reduced OPR by 43%, while a concentration of 50 mg S L¿1 came close to completely inhibiting microalgae gro…

Oxidomolybdenum(VI) complexes with aminoalcohol bis(phenolate) [O,N,O,O′] ligands: Synthesis and catalytic studies

2012

Abstract Oxidomolybdenum(VI) complex [MoOCl(Ln)] with a tetradentate O3N-type aminoalcohol bis(phenol) was prepared as two separable isomers. These complexes can catalyse the epoxidation of cis-cyclooctene and sulphoxidation of tolyl methyl sulphide as well as the oxotransfer reaction between PPh3 and DMSO.

Toxicological investigations in a fatal and non-fatal accident due to hydrogen sulphide (H2S)poisoning

2019

Hydrogen sulphide (H2S) is one of the most toxic natural gas and represents a not rare cause of fatal events in workplaces. We report here a serious accidental poisoning by hydrogen sulphide inhalation involving six sailors. Three of them died while the other three survived and were transported to the emergency room. No greenish discolouration of the body, that could be a feature of these type of deaths, was observed at autopsy. Given that blood and/or urine H2S detection does not allow to discriminate if it is related to inhalation or to putrefactive processes, the determination of thiosulphate, H2S main metabolite, is decisive. The succession of fatal events reported here can be rebuilt b…

Sensing properties of assembled Bi2S3nanowire arrays

2015

Bismuth sulfide (Bi2S3) nanowires were grown in porous aluminium oxide template and a selective chemical etching was applied to transfer the nanowires to a solution. Well aligned nanowire arrays were assembled on pre-patterned silicon substrates employing dielectrophoresis. Electron beam lithography was used to connect aligned individual nanowires to the common macroelectrode. In order to evaluate the conductometric sensing performance of the Bi2S3 nanowires, current–voltage characteristics were measured at different relative humidity (RH) levels (5–80%) / argon medium. The response of the Bi2S3 nanowires depending of RH is found to be considerably different from those reported for other ty…

Light-Induced Sublimation of Cadmium Sulphide

1984

It has recently been shown that single crystal CdS, illuminated by light whose photon energy exceeds the bandgap, can eject particles from its surface while the temperature is well below the value required for vacuum sublimation. This phenomenon has obvious applications to the fabrication of surface structures as well as to the production of thin films that can show good CdS stoichiometry. This work will present several data on the morphology of the etched surface and its dependance on crystal orientation; results of an analysis of the recondensed thin film phase from the ejected material will also be shown. Emphasis will be devoted to examples of high resolution surface structures fabricat…

Application of electrochemical impedance for characterising arrays of Bi2S3 nanowires

2015

Abstract Electrochemical Impedance Spectroscopy (EIS) was used to characterise the electrical properties of bismuth sulphide (Bi2S3) nanowires (NWs) templated within anodic aluminium oxide (AAO) membranes. A specially engineered cell, with a nominal electrolyte volume of 0.1–0.2 ml, was used to hold and measure the electrochemical impedance of the fragile NW/AAO samples. An equivalent circuit model was developed to determine the filling density of nanowires within the porous templates. The EIS method can be utilised to probe the nanowire filling density in porous membranes over large sample areas, which is often unobtainable using electron microscopy and conductive atomic force microscopy t…

Mechanical and cohesion properties of brass plated steel cords in a sulphurizing environment

1986

The mechanical and cohesion properties of brass plated steel cords have been investigated in dry hydrogen sulphide between 25 and 450° C. The extents of elastic and plastic regions, obtained from slow strain rate technique data have been defined, and the preferential site of decohesion tends to be the brass-steel interface.
