Analysis of static friction and elastic forces in a nanowire bent on a flat surface: A comparative study

ZnO nanowires bent to a complex shape and held in place by static friction force from supporting flat surface are investigated experimentally and theoretically. The complex shapes are obtained by bending the nanowires inside a scanning electron microscope with a sharp tip attached to a nanopositioner. Several methods previously described in the literature are applied along with author's original method to calculate the distributed friction force and stored elastic energy in the nanowires from the bending profile. Narrowing the Plasmonic Sensitivity Distribution by Considering the Individual Size of Gold Nanorods

The plasmonic nanoparticle sensitivity, sensing volume, and the signal-to-noise ratio are strongly dependent on the nanoparticle dimensions. It is difficult to chemically produce or purify nanoparticles with a size variation of less than 10%. This size variation induces a systematic error in sensing experiments that can be reduced when the exact size of each individual nanoparticle is known. In this work, we show how the size of gold nanorods can be estimated directly from the optical spectra of single nanoparticles by using the increase of radiation damping with the nanoparticle size. Surface plasmon polariton propagation across a gentle silver step

Abstract Surface plasmon polaritons (SPPs) are excited with light of wavelength λ1=632.8 nm on or near a gentle Ag/Ag step structure using focused beam, prism coupling and detected using a bare, sharpened fibre tip. The tip–sample separation is controlled by means of an evanescent optical field at wavelength λ2=543.5 nm in a photon scanning tunnelling microscope (PSTM). Hot carrier effects in n-MOSFETs with SiO2/HfO2/HfSiO gate stack and TaN metal gate

Charge trapping and trap generation in field-effect transistors with SiO2/HfO2/HfSiO gate stack and TaN metal gate electrode are investigated under uniform and non-uniform charge injection along the channel. Compared to constant voltage stress (CVS), hot carrier stress (HCS) exhibits more severe degradation in transconductance and subthreshold swing. By applying a detrapping bias, it is demonstrated that charge trapping induced degradation is reversible during CVS, while the damage is permanent for hot carrier injection case. © 2008 Elsevier B.V. Extended gate electrode arrays for extracellular signal recordings

Abstract We have fabricated arrays of planar gold electrodes arranged in a matrix of 8×8 with active areas ranging from 6 to 30 μm in diameter. An electronic amplification circuitry based on commercial junction field-effect transistors was used where the gold sensor fields act as extended gate electrodes (EGE) of the transistors, which leads to a new approach for long-term extracellular recording systems in vitro. The high input resistance of the amplification circuitry allows the use of small planar bare gold electrodes without further modification which therefore extends the frequency range of the measuring set-up down to the DC-level. Phase defect inspection of multilayer masks for 13.5 nm optical lithography using PEEM in a standing wave mode

We report on recent developments of an "at wavelength" full-field imaging technique for defect inspection of multilayer mask blanks for extreme ultraviolet lithography (EUVL). Our approach uses photoemission electron microscopy (PEEM) in a near normal incidence mode at 13.5 nut wavelength to image the photoemission induced by the EUV wave field on the multilayer blank surface. We analyze buried defects on Mo/Si multilayer samples down to a lateral size of 50 nm and report on first, results obtained from a six inches mask blank prototype as prerequisite for industrial usage. Spark Plasma Sintering tool design for preparing alumina-based Functionally Graded Materials

Abstract A way to produce Functionally Graded Materials (FGM) is by means of Spark Plasma Sintering (SPS) and specifically designated tools. These new tools permit a current density modulation and therefore a temperature variation along the z-axis. The key feature relies on a varying die section. FEM modelling has given the suitable range of die dimensions between the top and the bottom to obtain a given temperature gradient (around 300 °C) out of roughly a 15 mm height.
