The periodontal ligament (PDL) is exposed to different kinds of mechanical stresses such as bite force or orthodontic tooth movement. A simple and efficient model to study molecular responses to mechanical stress is the application of compressive force onto primary human periodontal ligament fibroblasts via glass disks. Yet, this model suffers from the need for primary cells from human donors which have a limited proliferative capacity. Here we show that an immortalized cell line, PDL-hTERT, derived from primary human periodontal ligament fibroblasts exhibits characteristic responses to glass disk-mediated compressive force resembling those of primary cells. These responses include inductio…
The effectiveness of influenza vaccination in preventing hospitalisations of elderly individuals in two influenza seasons: a multicentre case-control…
2017
Influenza vaccination may limit the impact of influenza in the community. The aim of this study was to assess the effectiveness of influenza vaccination in preventing hospitalisation in individuals aged ≥ 65 years in Spain. A multicentre case–control study was conducted in 20 Spanish hospitals during 2013/14 and 2014/15. Patients aged ≥ 65 years who were hospitalised with laboratory-confirmed influenza were matched with controls according to sex, age and date of hospitalisation. Adjusted vaccine effectiveness (VE) was calculated by multivariate conditional logistic regression. A total of 728 cases and 1,826 matched controls were included in the study. Overall VE was 36% (95% confidence inte…
High Fruit and Vegetable Consumption and Moderate Fat Intake Are Associated with Higher Carotenoid Concentration in Human Plasma
2021
This research was funded by CICYT [AGL2016-75329-R] and CIBEROBN from the Instituto de Salud Carlos III, ISCIII from the Ministerio de Ciencia, Innovación y Universidades, (AEI/FEDER, UE), Generalitat de Catalunya (GC) [2017SGR196]. Background Nonimmune hydrops fetalis (NIHF) is still a challenging diagnosis. The differential diagnosis is extensive and the success of identifying a cause depends on the thoroughness of efforts to establish a diagnosis. For the early diagnosis of NIHF, a virtual gene panel diagnostic tool was developed. The female premature baby in question was delivered via emergency cesarean at 30 + 1 weeks of gestational age (GA) due to rapidly developing NIHF to a healthy mother. The family history was noncontributory. Methods DNA of the family was extracted and sequenced by the virtual hydrops panel with whole-exome sequencing. Results The hydrops panel revealed Noonan syndrome (NS) with a germline m…
Flow Cytometric Analysis of the Expression Pattern of Peroxisomal Proteins, Abcd1, Abcd2, and Abcd3 in BV-2 Murine Microglial Cells
2017
Microglial cells play important roles in neurodegenerative diseases including peroxisomal leukodystrophies. The BV-2 murine immortalized cells are widely used in the context of neurodegenerative researches. It is therefore important to establish the expression pattern of peroxisomal proteins by flow cytometry in these cells. So, the expression pattern of various peroxisomal transporters (Abcd1, Abcd2, Abcd3) contributing to peroxisomal β-oxidation was evaluated on BV-2 cells by flow cytometry and complementary methods (fluorescence microscopy, and RT-qPCR). By flow cytometry a strong expression of peroxisomal proteins (Abcd1, Abcd2, Abcd3) was observed. These data were in agreement with tho…
AB0458 A PHASE II RANDOMISED, DOUBLE-BLIND, PLACEBO-CONTROLLED, PROOF OF CONCEPT STUDY OF ORAL SELETALISIB IN PATIENTS WITH PRIMARY SJÖGREN’S SYNDROM…
2019
Background: Seletalisib is a potent, selective oral inhibitor of phosphoinositide-3 kinase delta (PI3Kδ). Preclinical data have shown that the PI3Kδ pathway is upregulated within salivary glands of patients with PSS and contributes to disease pathogenesis.1 Objectives: To assess the efficacy and safety of seletalisib in patients with PSS. Methods: In this Phase II, double-blind, proof of concept study (NCT02610543), patients with PSS having an EULAR Sjogren’s Syndrome Disease Activity Index (ESSDAI) score ≥5 were randomised 1:1 to seletalisib once daily or placebo (PBO) in addition to current PSS therapy for 12 weeks. The primary endpoint was change from baseline in ESSDAI at Week 12. The s…
Revision of the taxonomic status of Synthesium elongatum (Ozaki, 1935) (Brachycladiidae), an intestinal digenean of narrow-ridged …
2019
Synthesium elongatum (Brachycladiidae) is an intestinal digenean described from the finless porpoise (Neophocaena asiaeorientalis) in Japan. Few records of this species exist and there is a remarkable morphological similarity between S. elongatum and S. tursionis, such that a synonymy between the species has been suggested previously. However, no morphological and/or molecular analysis has been carried out to clarify the taxonomic status of S. elongatum. In this study, we collected specimens of Synthesium sp. from N. asiaeorientalis in western Japan. The specimens possess lobed testes within the third quarter of the body, a round ovary, and vitellaria extending to level of uterine field, wh…
Empowerment as an affective-discursive technology in contemporary capitalism: insights from a play
2019
Over recent years, an increasing body of research in social and cultural studies has investigated the contemporary processes of social change from the point of view of affective capitalism. In this article, we take under scrutiny one of its technologies, namely, empowerment, by which we mean a state characterised by feelings of strength, ability and power that enable agency. More specifically, we investigate the way empowerment is presented in a cultural product, a play that tells a story about personnel training in a factory, shown in a city theatre in Finland. By linking recent theorisation of affective capitalism with an investigation of the intertextual and interdiscursive relations of …
An analysis of recent research on venture capital networks
2019
Purpose – this paper examines recent trends in venture capital network research. Network analysis is a useful approach for analyzing inter-organizational networks, especially for venture capitalists, which are characterized by plenty of connections. Although important steps ahead have been made, several research questions are still unanswered. Research methodology – this brief review analyses deeply three papers which are representative of the novel scientific literature in this field. Scrutinizing these works, I identify their points of strength and weaknesses, in order to understand how to pave the way for further research. Findings – this paper shows that the study of network weak ties a…
Corporate Governance Theories: From Micro Theories to National Systems Theories
2004
The objective of this article is to conduct a survey of the different corporate governance theories. In the first part, we present the micro theories by opposing the disciplinary view to the knowledge-based view. The second part deals with the macro or national systems theories. We separate the theories based on appropriation of the organizational rent from those attributing a dominant role to production. This survey highlights that the financial view of corporate governance is a very particular case and presents many limits.
