Energy and environmental life cycle assessment of an institutional catering service: An Italian case study
2019
Food production is recognised as one of the major drivers for global environmental pressure. In the last years, changes in consumption models result in an increasing population consuming food out of home that pose the catering service sector at the centre of the European Union policies aimed at improving the environmental sustainability of the food sector. In this framework, better technical knowledge on the environmental impacts of catering service is essential in order to identify potential actions towards a more sustainable food sector. This article presents an environmental assessment of a school catering service operating in Italy and delivering approximately 2,518,128 meals per year. …
Polarity factor 'Frizzled' in the demosponge Suberites domuncula: identification, expression and localization of the receptor in the epithelium/pinac…
2003
Until recently, it was assumed that polarity and axis formation have evolved only in metazoan phyla higher than Cnidaria. One key molecule involved in the signal transduction causing tissue polarity is Frizzled, a seven-transmembrane receptor that is activated by the Wnt family of secreted proteins. We report the isolation and characterization of a Frizzled gene from the demosponge Suberites domuncula (Sd-Fz). The deduced polypeptide comprises all characteristic domains known from Frizzled receptors of higher metazoans. In situ hybridization studies show that Sd-Fz is expressed in cells close to the surface of the sponges and in the pinacocytes of some canals. Northern blot analysis demonst…
Biofilm formation byCandida albicansmutants for genes coding fungal proteins exhibiting the eight-cysteine-containing CFEM domain
2006
Several features and functions of a Candida albicans gene, PGA10 (also designated as RBT51), coding for a putative polypeptide species belonging to a subset of fungal proteins containing an eight-cysteine domain referred as CFEM (Common in several Fungal Extracellular Membrane proteins), are described. The ORF of the gene (ORF19.5674) encoded a protein of 250 amino acids, with a predicted molecular mass of 25.17 kDa. The product of the PGA10 gene also exhibited some features reminiscent of a class II-type hydrophobin. Deletion of PGA10 resulted in a cascade of pleiotropic effects, mostly affecting cell-surface-related properties. Thus, the null pga10Delta mutant displayed an increased sensi…
Fusarium species recovered from the water distribution system of a French university hospital
2012
Abstract Dijon Hospital is a French tertiary care institution undergoing major renovation, and different microbiological controls revealed the presence of Fusarium spp. in the water distribution system. Because some Fusarium spp. can cause life-threatening opportunistic infections in immunocompromised patients, an 8-month survey was conducted in two hospital sites in order to evaluate the prevalence of the fungi in the water system. In 2 units of one hospital site, 100% of the samples of tap-water were positive, with high concentrations of Fusarium spp. (up to 10 5 cfu/L). In the second hospital site, 94% of samples were positive, but generally with lower concentrations. The analysis of tr…
GIORNALISMO E VETRINIZZAZIONE SOCIALE. LE DERIVE DELLA LOGICA SPETTACOLARE IN ITALIA
2014
The article focuses on the development of a television market model in Italian journalism in the last two decades, characterized by the success of the "entertainment" frame in both TV and print news. The use of a spectacular framing and commercialization of news has its roots in the American popular journalism of the 1800s, but is today connected to the more recent of a «Showcase» (or «display window») communication model. Each place is or can be a stage, and the traditional definition of news is revised: journalism does not present news objectively, but it offers dramatized reconstructions of parts of reality, focusing on the visual impact of the events and on the narrative strategy used t…
Glutathione metabolism under the influence of hydroperoxides in the lactating mammary gland of the rat. Effect of glucose and extracellular ATP.
1987
Tert-butyl hydroperoxide decreases GSH and total free glutathione (GSH+2GSSG) contents of acini from lactating mammary glands. The decrease in total free glutathione can be explained by an increase in mixed disulfide formation and by excretion of GSS G to the extracellular medium, and subsequent degradation catalyzed by gamma-glutamyl transpeptidase. Low concentrations of glucose prevented the changes in glutathione levels induced by the peroxide. In the presence of extracellular ATP, glucose did not prevent these changes. However, incubations with the peroxide, did not alter the rate of other metabolic pathways by acini.
Player performance, satisfaction, and video game enjoyment
2009
An experiment (N = 74) was conducted to investigate the impact of game difficulty and player performance on game enjoyment. Participants played a First Person Shooter game with systematically varied levels of difficulty. Satisfaction with performance and game enjoyment were assessed after playing. Results are not fully in line with predictions derived from flow and attribution theory and suggest players to (1) change their view on their own performance with its implications for enjoyment with increasing game experience and (2) to switch strategically between different sources of fun, thus maintaining a (somewhat) positive experience even when performance-based enjoyment is low.

Crystal Structure of the Maturation Protein from Bacteriophage Qβ
2017
Abstract Virions of the single-stranded RNA bacteriophages contain a single copy of the maturation protein, which is bound to the phage genome and is required for the infectivity of the particles. The maturation protein mediates the adsorption of the virion to bacterial pili and the subsequent release and penetration of the genome into the host cell. Here, we report a crystal structure of the maturation protein from bacteriophage Qβ. The protein has a bent, highly asymmetric shape and spans 110 A in length. Apart from small local substructures, the overall fold of the maturation protein does not resemble that of other known proteins. The protein is organized in two distinct regions, an α-he…
