The emission reduction potential of electric transport modes in Finland
2021
The transportation sector has become the fastest growing source of greenhouse gas (GHG) emissions. One solution to mitigate the impacts is a shift towards electric modes. Where previous studies have only focused on the replacement of individual modes, our study presents a more holistic approach by comparing land-based, water-based and airborne transportation modes. We study the GHG emission reduction potentials of electric cars, buses, trains, ferries and aircraft in comparison to existing modes on 34 routes within Finland and across the Baltic Sea to Sweden and Estonia. By comparing the GHG emissions in carbon dioxide equivalents (CO2-eq) per passenger kilometer for each mode, we also cons…
Influence of Operator's Experience on Root Canal Shaping Ability with a Rotary Nickel-Titanium Single-File Reciprocating Motion System
2013
The aim of this study was to evaluate the influence of the operator's experience on the shaping of double-curvature simulated root canals with a nickel-titanium single-file reciprocating motion system.Sixty double-curvature root canals simulated in methacrylate blocks were prepared by 10 students without any experience in endodontics and by 10 professionals who had studied endodontics at the postgraduate level. The Reciproc-VDW system's R25 file was used in the root canal preparation. The blocks were photographed before and after the instrumentation, and the time of instrumentation was also evaluated. Changes in root canal dimensions were analyzed in 6 positions.Significant differences (P.0…
Intercalation of daunomycin into stacked DNA base pairs. DFT study of an anticancer drug
2008
We have computationally studied the intercalation of the antitumor drug daunomycin into six stacks of Watson-Crick DNA base pairs i.e., AT-AT, AT-TA, GC-AT, CG-TA, GC-GC, GC-CG) using density functional theory (DFT). The proton affinity of the DNA intercalater daunomycin in water was computed to be 159.2 kcal/mol at BP86/TZ2P, which is in line with the experimental observation that daunomycin is protonated under physiological conditions. The intercalation interaction of protonated daunomycin with two stacked DNA base pairs was studied through a hybrid approach in which intercalation is treated at LDA/TZP while the molecular structure of daunomycin and hydrogen-bonded Watson-Crick pairs is c…
Confinement inside a Crystalline Sponge Induces Pyrrole To Form N−H⋅⋅⋅π Bonded Tetramers
2021
Based on the DFT‐level calculated molecular volume (V mol ) of pyrrole and its liquid density, pyrrole manifests the highest liquid density coefficient LD c (defined as [V mol • density • 0.6023]/FW) value of 0.7. Normal liquids have LD c < 0.63. This very high LD c is due to the strong N‐H … π interactions in solution and hence pyrrole can be considered to be a pseudo‐crystalline liquid. When trapped inside the confined space of the crystalline sponge a reorientation of the N‐H … π interaction is observed leading to specific cyclic N‐H … π tetramers and N‐H … π dimers, verified by single crystal X‐ray crystallographic and computational methods. These tetramers are of the same size as four …
Signal amplification and transduction in phytochrome photosensors
2014
[Introduction] Page 2 of 20 Sensory proteins must relay structural signals from the sensory site over large distances to regulatory output domains. Phytochromes are a major family of red-light sensing kinases that control diverse cell ular functions in plants, bacteria, and fungi. 1-9 Bacterial phytochro mes consist of a photosensory core and a C-te rminal regulatory domain. 10,11 Structures of photosensory cores are reported in the resting state 12-18 and conformational responses to light activat ion have been proposed in the vicinity of the chromophore. 19-23 However, the structure of the signalling state and the mechanism of downstream signal re lay through the photosensory core remain e…
Theoretical Study of Catalytic Efficiency of a Diels–Alderase Catalytic Antibody: An Indirect Effect Produced During the Maturation Process
2007
The Diels–Alder reaction is one of the most important and versatile transformations available to organic chemists for the construction of complex natural products, therapeutics agents, and synthetic materials. Given the lack of efficient enzymes capable of catalyzing this kind of reaction, it is of interest to ask whether a biological catalyst could be designed from an antibody-combining site. In the present work, a theoretical study of the different behavior of a germline catalytic antibody (CA) and its matured form, 39 A-11, that catalyze a Diels–Alder reaction has been carried out. A free-energy perturbation technique based on a hybrid quantum-mechanics/molecular-mechanics scheme, togeth…
Activation of self-renewal and meiotic genes in tumour cell lines resistant to genotoxic treatment
2014

‘Zeitgeist’and minority influence—where is the causality: A comment on Clark (1990)
1995
Does the mood of the time (Zeitgeist) facilitate the influence minorities are able to exercise, or is it itself a direct product of minority influence ? It is argued, from a social psychological definition of the minority-majority relation, that the former interpretation fails to explain many of the observed effects and in particular the conversion effect. A model is offered that is consistent with the second interpretation.
On Angels and Demons. Analysis of a sequence in the iconographic programme of the encyclopedic moralization of fin´amors in Matfré Ermengaud´s Brevia…
2017
This paper analyzes three illuminations of Matfré Ermengaud´s Breviari d´Amor which represent the aut…
