Fluvastatin stabilizes the blood–brain barrier in vitro by nitric oxide-dependent dephosphorylation of myosin light chains

2006

Inhibition of the 3-hydroxy-3-methylglutaryl-coenzyme-A reductase and the downstream mevalonate pathway is in part responsible for the beneficial effects that statins exert on the cardiovascular system. In this study we aimed at analysing the stabilizing effects of fluvastatin on the blood-brain barrier (BBB) integrity, using an in vitro co-culture model of ECV304 and C6, or primary bovine endothelial cells and rat astrocytes. Fluvastatin dose-dependently (1-25 micromol/l) increased barrier integrity as analysed by measurements of transendothelial electrical resistance (TEER). This effect (117.4+/-2.6% at 25 micromol/l) was significantly reduced by the nitric oxide (NO) synthase inhibitor L…

Synthesis and evaluation of microtubule assembly inhibition and cytotoxicity of prenylated derivatives of cyclo-l-Trp-l-Pro

2000

The synthesis of three isoprenylated derivatives of cyclo-L-Trp-L-Pro is described. These substances have been evaluated for cytotoxic activity in rat normal fibroblast 3Y1 cells and have also been evaluated in vitro for the inhibition of microtubule assembly.

Hemocyte migration during inflammatory-like reaction of Ciona intestinalis (Tunicata, ascidiacea).

2000

Following an injuring factor such as the injection of erythrocytes into the tunic of Ciona intestinalis, an inflammatory-like response occurs and blood cells are massively involved in these mechanisms. Electron microscope observations illustrate the infiltration and migration of blood cells throughout the mantle epithelium into the tunic and show several prominent morphological changes.

Ion-exchange high-performance liquid chromatography of nucleotides and polypeptides on new types of ion-exchange sorbents, based on polystyrene-coate…

1991

A novel type of ion exchanger was prepared by multipoint covalent binding of polystyrene chains onto the surface of porous silica followed by polymer-analogous modification of the bonded layer. Both anion and cation exchangers were synthesized and examined in the separation of nucleotides and proteins. Rapid and efficient separation of basic polypeptides on strong anion exchangers and that of acidic polypeptides on strong cation exchangers could be achieved. For the separation of complete mixtures of polypeptides the application of zwitter-ionic ion exchangers can be recommended.

Effect of DB-c-AMP on mechanical characteristics of ventricular and atrial preparations of several mammalian species

1974

Conflicting results exist about the influence of cyclic N6-2′-O-dibutyryl-AMP (DB-c-AMP) on myocardial contractile force. The present study was designed to examine whether the positive inotropic action of DB-c-AMP is restricted to certain model preparations or whether it can be assumed to represent a more general effect of the drug. Therefore, the effects of DB-c-AMP on myocardial force and on various parameters of the isometric contraction curve were examined in isolated electrically driven (0.5–2Hz) ventricular and atrial preparations of several mammalian species (cat, rabbit, calf, sheep, rat and guinea-pig). The following results were obtained:

Combining Hexanoic Acid Plant Priming with Bacillus thuringiensis Insecticidal Activity against Colorado Potato Beetle

2013

Interaction between insect herbivores and host plants can be modulated by endogenous and exogenous compounds present in the source of food and might be successfully exploited in Colorado potato beetle (CPB) pest management. Feeding tests with CPB larvae reared on three solanaceous plants (potato, eggplant and tomato) resulted in variable larval growth rates and differential susceptibility to Bacillus thuringiensis Cry3Aa toxin as a function of the host plant. An inverse correlation with toxicity was observed in Cry3Aa proteolytic patterns generated by CPB midgut brush-border membrane vesicles (BBMV) from Solanaceae-fed larvae, being the toxin most extensively proteolyzed on potato, followed…

Evolutionary Considerations in Potato Pest Management

2013

Incorporating our knowledge of fundamental evolutionary processes into pest control practices is essential for maximizing their efficiency. The insect pest complex of potato is characterized by a high degree of plasticity and adaptability. In particular, the Colorado potato beetle quickly expanded its host range to include cultivated potato, and has shown a remarkable ability to evolve resistance to a wide variety of chemicals. Another major pest of potatoes, the green peach aphid, is also very adaptable to insecticides. Both of these insects can also develop resistance to non-chemical methods of their suppression, such as biological control and crop rotation. In addition, understanding ins…

Insect pests of the Herbarium of the Palermo botanical garden and evaluation of semiochemicals for the control of the key pest Lasioderma serricorne …

2020

Abstract The herbaria are scientific tools of great importance that preserve extinct, rare, endemic, and common plant species and also have importance as Cultural Heritage for their historical and esthetical value. Herbaria can be infested by several insect pests feeding on dried plants, and their management is often complicated and difficult as the use of chemical insecticides can have negative drawbacks. This suggests a strong need for alternative control tools such as the use of semiochemicals to develop Integrated Pest Management (IPM) programs. In order to identify the main insect pests that determine the damages on the exsiccata stored in the Palermo Botanical Garden's Herbarium, one …
