Dairy Consumption and Incidence of Breast Cancer in the 'Seguimiento Universidad de Navarra' (SUN) Project.

Dairy products might influence breast cancer (BC) risk. However, evidence is inconsistent. We sought to examine the association between dairy product consumption—and their subtypes—and incident BC in a Mediterranean cohort. The SUN (“Seguimiento Universidad de Navarra”) Project is a Spanish dynamic ongoing cohort of university graduates. Dairy product consumption was estimated through a previously validated 136-item food frequency questionnaire (FFQ). Incident BC was reported in biennial follow-up questionnaires and confirmed with revision of medical records and consultation of the National Death Index. Relationship between Thyroid Status during the First Trimester of Pregnancy and Neonatal Well-Being

Iodine is an essential micronutrient for the synthesis of thyroid hormones. The proper functioning of the thyroid axis is essential for the normal development of the nervous system, especially in the first trimester of gestation. The aim of the present study was to analyze the perinatal outcomes, anthropometry, and APGAR test scores of newborns and to relate them to maternal thyroid status. A total of 190 newborns participated in the study. Self-Reported Restrictive Eating, Eating Disorders, Menstrual Dysfunction, and Injuries in Athletes Competing at Different Levels and Sports

The purpose of this study was to investigate the prevalence of self-reported restrictive eating, current or past eating disorder, and menstrual dysfunction and their relationships with injuries. Furthermore, we aimed to compare these prevalences and associations between younger (aged 15–24) and older (aged 25–45) athletes, between elite and non-elite athletes, and between athletes competing in lean and non-lean sports. Several changes of magnesium (Mg) metabolism have been reported with aging, including diminished Mg intake, impaired intestinal Mg absorption and renal Mg wasting. Mild Mg deficits are generally asymptomatic and clinical signs are usually non-specific or absent. Potential in vitro antioxidant, anti-inflammatory, antidiabetic, and anticancer effect of arachidonic acid-elicited basil leaves

Abstract The study presents the impact of elicitation of basil with 0.01 µM (AA1), 1 µM (AA2) and 100 µM (AA3) arachidonic acid on the content and bioactivity of potentially bioavailable polyphenols. Elevated levels of phenolic compounds correlated with increased biological activity were observed in the extracts from basil (control and elicited) subjected to simulated gastrointestinal digestion in comparison to chemical and standard buffer extracts. Elicitation with AA1 and AA2 resulted in an 3-fold and more than 4-fold increase in the content of potentially bioavailable rosmarinic acid, respectively. Gene-diet interaction in plasma lipid response to plant sterols and stanols: A review of clinical trials

Abstract Plant sterols and stanols (PS) are well known for their cholesterol-lowering effect by reducing intestinal absorption of cholesterol. However, genetic factors modulate the low-density lipoprotein cholesterol (LDL-C) response to PS therapy. This review examines clinical trials evaluating the impact of the main genes associated with response of plasma lipid concentrations to PS intake: APOE, CYP7A1, ABCG5/G8, NPC1L1, CETP, APOA4/A5, SCARBI, HMGCR, PPARα, LIPC, MTHFR and LPA. Abstract This study provides the first comprehensive report on mass concentrations of particulate matter of various sizes, inorganic and organic gas concentrations monitored at three sampling sites in the city of Palermo (Sicily, Italy). It also provides information on the water-soluble species and trace elements. A total of 2054 PM10 (1333) and PM2.5 (721) daily measurements were collected from November 2006 to February 2008.
