Mobile Electronic Commerce: Emerging Issues

2000

There are many definitions for Mobile Electronic Commerce (M-Commerce). We define M-Commerce as any type of transaction of an economic value having at least at one end a mobile terminal and thus using the mobile telecommunications network. The Wireless Application Protocol (WAP) plays an important role in m-commerce by optimizing Internet standards for the constraints of the wireless environment and thus bridging the gap between Internet and mobile world. Mobile Network Operators can play a major role in m-commerce by being strategically positioned between customers and content/service providers. In this paper we investigate the roles the operator can play in m-commerce and discuss respecti…

HSDPA Link Adaptation Improvement Based on Node-B CQI Processing

2007

In this paper HSDPA link adaptation (LA) based on Channel Quality Indicator (CQI) reports is optimised. A pre-processing of the last received CQI reports is done before the execution of the LA algorithm in the Node-B in order to obtain more profitable channel quality estimations and hence improve the LA performance. Different types of processing techniques are presented and assessed, considering from the simplest sample averaging to some more elaborated predictive algorithms. Results demonstrate that a non negligible enhancement in the LA performance can be obtained if medium and high speed users are considered.

The dynamics over the next few years of the Spanish mobile telecommunications market share: a mathematical modelling approach

2013

Taking into account available data from 2002 to 2009 about the market share percentages of the Spanish mobile telecommunications service providers, a dynamic diffusion model to study the evolution of the clients’ change between the different companies during the period 2010–2016 is proposed. The constructed model provides a tool for forecasting short-term trends about the customers’ preferences with respect to mobile network operators taking into account both, autonomous decisions due to direct marketing and advertising strategies, and also decisions adopted through interaction via social influence. The model can provide insights to companies for designing strategies in order to gain market…

Teachers' attitudes, competencies, and readiness to adopt mobile learning approaches

2014

This study explores how teachers' attitudes and competencies influence their willingness to adopt mobile learning approaches. By mobile learning we mean teaching approaches that use mobile devices to enliven and extend traditional teaching. Of particular interest is exploring how first-order (e.g. lack of adequate access, time, training and support) and secondorder (e.g. teacher's pedagogical and technological beliefs and willingness to change) barriers affect teachers' beliefs and attitudes. In the autumn of 2012, we conducted three mobile learning case studies in Central Finland. We used semistructured interviews to collect data. The study indicated that positive experiences raised teache…

Collaborative Mobile Clouds: An Energy Efficient Paradigm for Content Sharing

2018

On the way toward enabling efficient content distribution, reducing energy consumption and prolonging battery life of mobile equipment, an emerging paradigm, i.e., mobile cloud, which is based on content distribution, was proposed. As a mobile platform that is oriented toward content distribution, mobile cloud is also foreseen as an energy-efficient solution for future wireless networks. The benefits of using CMC for content distribution or distributed computing from social networking perspectives have been studied earlier. In this article, we first present the concepts of CMC and then discuss the energy-efficiency benefits from the system-level point-of-view as well as open challenges in d…

Consumer adoption of mobile technologies: a literature review

2015

Although the total number of mobile subscriptions reached 6.8 billion worldwide (ITU, 2013) confirming in the process that mobile technology is widespread, academic literature has so far focused only on explaining adoption of mobile technology and services. This literature review analyses 67 studies from the period 2005-2013 and finds the following: a) most studies are quantitative in nature and come from Asia; b) the Technology Acceptance Model is the most used theory; c) future research should also utilise qualitative methods and examine the behavioural outcomes of mobile adoption instead of simply adoption in consumer markets. peerReviewed

Change and Control Paradoxes in Mobile Infrastructure Innovation: The Android and iOS Mobile Operating Systems Cases

2012

The advent of the smart phone as a highly complex technology has been accompanied by mobile operating systems (OS), large communities of developers, diverse content providers, and increasingly complex networks, jointly forming digital infrastructures. The multi-faceted and relational character of such digital infrastructures raises issues around how change and control can be conceptualized and understood. We discuss how change and control are paradoxically related in digital infrastructures and how they affect the evolution of such infrastructures. We examine these paradoxes by examining the change in, and competition between, two mobile operating systems: Apple's iOS and Google's Android a…

Robotization of Mobile Communication

2020

The aim of this chapter is to systematize the discussion regarding robotization of mobile communication. The chapter begins by clarifying the fundamental role of both robot hardware and robot software in this process. This is followed by a critical overview of existing research, which is classified into three categories. First, robotization is understood as the hybridization of the human body with existing ordinary mobile devices. Second, the incorporation of new robotic software, such as algorithms, artificial intelligence, and virtual assistants, into mobile devices is seen to robotize them from inside. Third, the convergence of smart communication devices, typically as user interfaces wi…

Feasibility of future epidemiological studies on possible health effects of mobile phone base stations.

2006

The increasing deployment of mobile communication base stations led to an increasing demand for epidemiological studies on possible health effects of radio frequency emissions. The methodological challenges of such studies have been critically evaluated by a panel of scientists in the fields of radiofrequency engineering/dosimetry and epidemiology. Strengths and weaknesses of previous studies have been identified. Dosimetric concepts and crucial aspects in exposure assessment were evaluated in terms of epidemiological studies on different types of outcomes. We conclude that in principle base station epidemiological studies are feasible. However, the exposure contributions from all relevant …

P4Well Concept to Empower Self-Management of Psychophysiological Wellbeing and Load Recovery

2009

Chronic health problems related to mental wellbeing are rapidly growing, calling for novel solutions focusing on individual as a psychophysiological being. We describe a novel technology-based concept for empowering citizen towards holistic self-management of her wellbeing: “P4Well” (Pervasive Personal and PsychoPhysiological management of WELLness). The primary focus of the concept is on management of stress and recovery from stress caused by daily life through improved health management strategies. The P4Well concept combines modern psychological methods with personal health technologies. The technologies include a web-portal and web-based tools, mobile phone with mobile client applicatio…
