Towards a characterization of explanations in mathematics textbooks

This work is part of a broader study which aims to examine the relation between explanation and proof in teachers’ practices and the way in which this relation emerges from the texts in the mathematics schoolbooks. Our hypothesis is that explanation and proof share some of their characterizing parameters and this makes possible an overlapping of meaning which favors a switch of roles during teaching/learning activities. First results from textbooks analysis are presented pointing out remarkable features of explanation arisen to date.

La construccion social y cultural del cuerpo influye en el conocimiento personal y de los otros. Los libros de texto transmiten el capital cultural de una sociedad a sus ciudadanos mas pequenos. El objetivo del estudio consiste en describir la forma en que se representa el cuerpo en las imagenes de un libro de texto de educacion preescolar. Podręcznik do nauki języka angielskiego Franciszka Kuszla w świetle jego biografii

W literaturze glottodydaktycznej Franciszek Kuszel pojawia się sporadycznie jako autor rozmówek polsko-angielskich pt. Rozmowy podręczne dla podróżujących do Londynu Polaków nieumiejących zupełnie Języka Angielskiego (1857). Pozostawił po sobie także inne materiały: „Książkę Podręczną do Uczenia się Języka Angielskiego dla Uczniów Szkoły Główney w Warszawie” [1864] napisaną na potrzeby lektoratu angielskiego w Szkole Głównej Warszawskiej i powieloną metodą litograficzną, a także „Dziennik czynności osobistych od dnia 25 września 1834” – rękopiśmienne źródło informacji biograficznych. Artykuł stawia sobie dwa podstawowe cele: nakreślić biografię autora oraz dokonać analizy jego podręcznika.

Nie wszyscy zdają sobie sprawę z tego, że szkolne podręczniki historii to dla wielu ludzi jedyne książki historyczne, z którymi mieli styczność w ciągu swojego życia. The Unification of Italy represented a political, educational and mathematical turning point; leading researchers worked to raise both the mathematical and political standard in Italy through their active role in the reform of the Italian educational system at the secondary as well as at the university levels. This article examines the comparisons made between Indians and Antiquity in early nineteenth-century American literature (notably in the works of Washington Irving and James Fenimore Cooper); to do so, it begins by reaching back to references in European and American writings of the eighteenth century. One of the main motivations behind the associations between Native Americans and the Ancient World made in the early decades of the nineteenth century was to “elevate” Indians in order to transform them into worthy symbols of the recently established United States. El objetivo de este trabajo es analizar las imágenes que aparecen en los libros de texto de Educación Física en el tercer ciclo de Educación Primaria y comprobar si los estereotipos con respecto al género y la raza han sido eliminados en sus contenidos. Se realiza un estudio descriptivo que utiliza el análisis de contenido como técnica central de la investigación. La muestra está formada por 997 imágenes, pertenecientes a cinco editoriales diferentes (Anaya, Inde, Paidotribo, Bruño y Serbal) que han publicado sus libros de texto a partir de la actual Ley de Educación 2/2006.
