Spillovers from the oil sector to the housing market cycle

2017

We assess the spillovers from the oil sector to the housing market cycle using quarterly data for 20 net oil-exporting and -importing industrial countries, and employing continuous- and discrete-time duration models. We do not uncover a statistically significant difference in the average duration of booms and normal times in the housing markets of those net oil-importers and net oil-exporters. Similarly, the degree of exposure to commodity price fluctuations does not seem to significantly affect the housing market cycle. However, we find that housing booms are shorter when oil prices increase than housing busts when oil prices decrease. We also show that the net oil-importers are more vulne…

ESCAPE TIMES IN STOCK MARKETS

2005

We study the statistical properties of escape times for stock price returns in the Wall Street market. In particular we get the escape time distribution for real data from daily transactions and for three models: (i) the Wiener process with drift and a constant market volatility, (ii) Heston and (iii) GARCH models, where the volatility is a stochastic process. We find that the first model is unable to catch all the features of the escape time distribution of real data. Moreover, the Heston model describes the probability density function for both return and escape times better than the GARCH model.

Development of multidimensional spectroscopic and microscopic techniques to facilitate the monitoring of native fluorescence of biomolecules.

2022

There is a need for the development of rapid and reliable characterization tools for biological media. The objective of this thesis is to develop a method based on the acquisition of excitation-emission matrices of fluorescence (EEMF) coupled with the use of fluorescence lifetime measurement in spectroscopy and microscopy (FLIM). These techniques have great potential due to their speed, low sample volume required for analysis, non-destructive sample analysis, and low cost. This project focused on two biological media of great interest to the food industry: wine and bacterial spores. On one hand, we have a beverage representing a large world market, and on the other hand, a food contaminant …

Corrigendum: ExGUtils: A Python Package for Statistical Analysis With the ex-Gaussian Probability Density

2018

The study of reaction times and their underlying cognitive processes is an important field in Psychology. Reaction times are usually modeled through the ex-Gaussian distribution, because it provides a good fit to multiple empirical data. The complexity of this distribution makes the use of computational tools an essential element in the field. Therefore, there is a strong need for efficient and versatile computational tools for the research in this area. In this manuscript we discuss some mathematical details of the ex-Gaussian distribution and apply the ExGUtils package, a set of functions and numerical tools, programmed for python, developed for numerical analysis of data involving the ex…

Blockchain for Smart Cities: Applications for IoT and Video Surveillance Systems

2020

The recent revolution of the Internet of Things introduces new engaging operat- ing scenarios. The IoT paradigm enables the intertwined use of physical and soft- ware components through the interconnection of devices that exchange data with each other without direct human interaction in several fields, especially in industrial and home environments. In the framework of the Italian-Vietnamese cooperation on the topics of smart cities and Blockchain, we present two applications of the blockchain technology, which can be applied, respectively in indoor, for monitoring and controlling smart homes, and in outdoor, for visual monitoring through video surveillance systems. In both cases, we propos…

Core hole screening and decay rates of double core ionized first row hydrides.

2013

Because of the high intensity, X-ray free electron lasers allow one to create and probe double core ionized states in molecules. The decay of these multiple core ionized states crucially determines the evolution of radiation damage in single molecule diffractive imaging experiments. Here we have studied the Auger decay in hydrides of first row elements after single and double core ionization by quantum mechanical ab initio calculations. In our approach the continuum wave function of the emitted Auger electron is expanded into spherical harmonics on a radial grid. The obtained decay rates of double K-shell vacancies were found to be systematically larger than those for the respective single …

"Ein deutsches Tagebuch" Stefana Chwina

2017

The main themes of this article are connected with reading the prose of Stefan Chwin: Kartki z dziennika [Pages of a diary] (2004) and Dziennik dla dorosłych [A diary for adults] (2008), which selected and translated by Marta Kijowska came out in Berlin, under the title: Ein deutsches Tagebuch. The weekly Die Zeit placed it on the list of the ten best books of 2015. In the context of this distinction, reading Chwin’s diaries becomes a unique putting values to test, a discovery of the significance of the author’s voice in discussions about the condition of modem world and contemporary human being. This is so because a close reading of Chwin’s diaries allows us not only to cognitively go thro…

Simptomatologia depressiva, estrès percebut i suport social en adolescents víctimes de ciberassetjament

2016

GFP-mut2 Proteins in Trehalose-Water Matrixes: Spatially Heterogeneous Protein-Water-Sugar Structures

2007

We report investigations on the properties of nanoenvironments around single-GFP-mut2 proteins in trehalose-water matrixes. Single-GFPmut2 molecules embedded in thin trehalose-water films were characterized in terms of their fluorescence brightness, bleaching dynamics, excited state lifetime, and fluorescence polarization. For each property, sets of approximately 100-150 single molecules have been investigated as a function of trehalose content and hydration. Three distinct and interconverting families of proteins have been found which differ widely in terms of bleaching dynamics, brightness, and fluorescence polarization, whose relative populations sizably depend on sample hydration. The r…

Limits on neutrino Lorentz violation from multimessenger observations of TXS 0506+056

2019

The observation by the IceCube Collaboration of a high-energy ($E \gtrsim 200$ TeV) neutrino from the direction of the blazar TXS 0506+056 and the coincident observations of enhanced $\gamma$-ray emissions from the same object by MAGIC and other experiments can be used to set stringent constraints on Lorentz violation in the propagation of neutrinos that is linear in the neutrino energy: $\Delta v = - E/M_1$, where $\Delta v$ is the deviation from the velocity of light, and $M_1$ is an unknown high energy scale to be constrained by experiment. Allowing for a difference in neutrino and photon propagation times of $\sim 10$ days, we find that $M_1 \gtrsim 3 \times 10^{16}$ GeV. This improves …
