Cognitive Effort and Efficiency in Translation Revision

2019

Empirical studies of revision are often based on either think aloud protocols, interviews, or observational methods. Eye tracking and keylogging methods are rarely applied to the study of revision behavior. The authors employ established methods from translation process research (TPR) to study the eye movement and typing behavior during self-revision (i.e., the phase in the translation process that follows a first complete draft). The authors measure the effect of behavior during the drafting phase on the relative revision duration. Relative revision duration is the time translators spend revising the first complete draft of the source text. They find that the most efficient process involve…

Towards a methodological toolset for the psycholinguistics of translation

2021

Abstract The manuscript provides readers with a basic methodological toolset for experimental psycholinguistic studies on translation. Following a description of key methodological concepts and the rationale behind experimental designs in psycholinguistics, we discuss experimental paradigms adopted from bilingualism research, which potentially constitute a methodological foundation for studies investigating the psycholinguistics of translation. Specifically, we show that priming paradigms possess several inherent advantages which make them particularly suitable for research on translation. The manuscript critically discusses key methodological problems associated with such paradigms and ill…

Multiplicative loops of 2-dimensional topological quasifields

2015

We determine the algebraic structure of the multiplicative loops for locally compact $2$-dimensional topological connected quasifields. In particular, our attention turns to multiplicative loops which have either a normal subloop of positive dimension or which contain a $1$-dimensional compact subgroup. In the last section we determine explicitly the quasifields which coordinatize locally compact translation planes of dimension $4$ admitting an at least $7$-dimensional Lie group as collineation group.

Fittingmengen und lockettabschnitte

1990

Abstract The theory of Lockett sections is transferred from Fitting classes to Fitting sets. This in general works only partially; in some special groups (which I call “mobility” groups), however, among these the stable linear groups, a literal translation of the Fitting class theory is possible. As the groups relevant in outer Fitting pairs actually are mobility groups, a new way of deriving information on the Lockett section of a Fitting class arises. This is used to present a simplified, if nonsoluble, counter-example to Lockett's conjecture and to decide a related question. Also, an approach to generating Fitting classes is given.

LR(k) Parsing

1990

In this chapter we shall generalize the notion of strong LL(k) parsing presented in Chapter 5 and consider a method for deterministic left parsing that applies to a slightly wider class of context-free grammars than does the strong LL(k) parsing method. This method will be called “canonical LL(k) parsing”. As in strong LL(k) parsing, the acronym “LL(k)” means that the input string is parsed (1) in a single Left-to-right scan, (2) producing a Left parse, and (3) using lookahead of length k.

Semimodular Locally Projective Lattices of Rank 4 from v.Staudt’s Point of View

1981

We consider groups of projectivities in a certain kind of lattices called “Spaces”,also comprising the circle planes, and give theorems of v.Staudtian type, which characterize those Spaces which can be represented by a sublattice of a projective geometry of rank 4.

Postcolonial Ghosts / Fantômes Postcoloniaux

2009

As liminal beings, ghosts seem particularly appropriate to define, question or challenge hybrid cultures where several, seemingly irreconcilable, identities coexist. The present volume wonders how they manifest themselves in the English-speaking world, and whether there is a specifically postcolonial kind of haunting. The 22 articles deal with textual, translational or historical ghosts, and take us to Canada, Australia, Africa, India or the Caribbean. Poems by Gerry Turcotte literally haunt the volume, which thus juxtaposes theory and practice in a dynamic and fruitful way.

Working with Transcripts and Translated Data

2008

Transcribing talk originating from various interactional contexts into a written form is an integral part qualitative research practice. Transcripts are produced for particular analytic purposes and therefore range in detail, from broad verbatim transcripts in more content-oriented analysis to extremely refined and detailed transcriptions on interaction-oriented analysis of naturally occurring data. Learning to master transcription skills, and solving the practical, technical and theoretical considerations and decisions that go into the process of producing good quality transcripts is something that both students, teachers of qualitative methods and researchers within the field equally stru…

Syntactic Variance and Priming Effects in Translation

2016

The present work investigates the relationship between syntactic variation and priming in translation. It is based on the claim that languages share a common cognitive network of neural activity. When the source and target languages are solicited in a translation context, this shared network can lead to facilitation effects, so-called priming effects. We suggest that priming is a default setting in translation, a special case of language use where source and target languages are constantly co-activated. Such priming effects are not restricted to lexical elements, but do also occur on the syntactic level. We tested these hypotheses with translation data from the TPR database, more specifical…
