Fair Pairwise Learning to Rank

2020

Ranking algorithms based on Neural Networks have been a topic of recent research. Ranking is employed in everyday applications like product recommendations, search results, or even in finding good candidates for hiring. However, Neural Networks are mostly opaque tools, and it is hard to evaluate why a specific candidate, for instance, was not considered. Therefore, for neural-based ranking methods to be trustworthy, it is crucial to guarantee that the outcome is fair and that the decisions are not discriminating people according to sensitive attributes such as gender, sexual orientation, or ethnicity. In this work we present a family of fair pairwise learning to rank approaches based on Neur…

Delta 5-desaturation of dihomogammalinolenic acid (20:3(n-6)) into arachidonic acid (20:4(n-6)) by rat liver microsomes and incorporation of fatty ac…

1991

Abstract Liver microsomes of rats fed an essential fatty acid (EFA)-deficient diet or a commercial balanced diet were used to study the effect of incubation time on the Δ 5 -desaturation of [ 14 C] dihomogammalinolenic acid (20:3( n −6)) into arachidonic acid (20:4( n −6)) and incorporation of the two acids into microsomal phospholipids. The EFA-deficient diet highly increased the desaturation rate of 20:3( n −6). Incorporation of the formed 20:4( n −6) into microsomal phospholipids was also increased but at saturating concentration of substrate only. At early times of incubation, the precursor 20:3( n −6) was rapidly incorporated into phospholipids. Formation and incorporation of 20:4( n −…

Age-related changes in delta 6 and delta 5 desaturase activities in rat liver microsomes.

1993

Age-related changes in Δ6 desaturation of [1-14C]α-linolenic acid and [1-14C]linoleic acid and in Δ5 desaturation of [2-14C]dihomo-γ-linolenic acid were studied in liver microsomes from Wistar male rats at various ages ranging from 1.5 to 24 mon. Desaturase activities were expressed both as specific activity of liver microsomes and as the capacity of whole liver to desaturate by taking into account the total amount of liver microsomal protein. Δ6 Desaturation of α-linolenic acid increased from 1.5 to 3 mon and then decreased linearly up to 24 mon to reach the same desaturation capacity of liver measured at 1.5 mon. The capacity of liver to desaturate linoleic acid increased up to 6 mon and …

Fatty acid metabolism, pharmacological nutrients and hypertension.

1997

Abstract The purpose of the present study was to investigate the effect of a concentrated preparation (EPA30) containing eicosapentaenoic acid (EPA. 20:5 n -3) and docosahexaenoic acid (DHA, 22:6 n -3) on the limiting desaturation steps of the polyunsaturated fatty acid biosynthesis in spontaneously hypertensive rats (SHR). Adult SHR were divided into two groups: one group received a standard diet, and the experimental group the standard diet including 0.8% of EPA30 for 9 weeks. Blood pressure was measured at the end of the diets. The desaturase activities and fatty acid composition were determined in isolated hepatocytes. The blood pressure did not decrease in the experimental group. The d…

PESI - a taxonomic backbone for Europe

2015

Reliable taxonomy underpins communication in all of biology, not least nature conservation and sustainable use of ecosystem resources. The flexibility of taxonomic interpretations, however, presents a serious challenge for end-users of taxonomic concepts. Users need standardised and continuously harmonised taxonomic reference systems, as well as highquality and complete taxonomic data sets, but these are generally lacking for nonspecialists. The solution is in dynamic, expertly curated web-based taxonomic tools. The Pan-European Species-directories Infrastructure (PESI) worked to solve this key issue by providing a taxonomic e-infrastructure for Europe. It strengthened the relevant social (…

CitySearcher: A City Search Engine For Interests

2017

We introduce CitySearcher, a vertical search engine that searches for cities when queried for an interest. Generally in search engines, utilization of semantics between words is favorable for performance improvement. Even though ambiguous query words have multiple semantic meanings, search engines can return diversified results to satisfy different users' information needs. But for CitySearcher, mismatched semantic relationships can lead to extremely unsatisfactory results. For example, the city Sale would incorrectly rank high for the interest shopping because of semantic interpretations of the words. Thus in our system, the main challenge is to eliminate the mismatched semantic relationsh…

AnMBR, reclaimed water and fertigation: Two case studies in Italy and Spain to assess economic and technological feasibility and CO2 emissions within…

2020

[EN] The use of anaerobic membrane bioreactor (AnMBR) technology on urban wastewater can help to alleviate droughts, by reusing the water and nutrients embedded in the effluent in agriculture (fertigation) in line with Circular Economy principles. The combination of AnMBR and fertigation reduces CO2 emissions due to the organic matter valorization and the partial avoidance of mineral fertilizer requirements. However, both AnMBR and fertigation still face technological and regulatory barriers that need to be overcome. These bottlenecks were tackled within the first Innovation Deal approved by the European Commission in 2016, and gave rise to several case studies on water reuse systems. The r…

The role of perspective on students’ use of multiple documents to solve an openended Task

2013

AbstractMcCrudden & Schraw (2007) show how students’ interaction with a text is mediated by the instructions they are presented with. Specifically, perspective instructions prompt readers to use background knowledge to evaluate text from an assigned point of view. Research on perspective in single texts has demonstrated that readers confer relevance on text segments that are consistent with the assigned perspective (Pichert & Anderson, 1977). This work has tested the effects of perspective when reading conflicting information from multiple documents to perform an open-ended task, as well as has studied if the trustworthiness of a source exerts any influence on students’ decision to use info…

Safety and Outcome of Revascularization Treatment in Patients With Acute Ischemic Stroke and COVID-19: The Global COVID-19 Stroke Registry.

2023

Background and ObjectivesCOVID-19–related inflammation, endothelial dysfunction, and coagulopathy may increase the bleeding risk and lower the efficacy of revascularization treatments in patients with acute ischemic stroke (AIS). We aimed to evaluate the safety and outcomes of revascularization treatments in patients with AIS and COVID-19.MethodsThis was a retrospective multicenter cohort study of consecutive patients with AIS receiving intravenous thrombolysis (IVT) and/or endovascular treatment (EVT) between March 2020 and June 2021 tested for severe acute respiratory syndrome coronavirus 2 infection. With a doubly robust model combining propensity score weighting and multivariate regress…
