Memorializing mass deaths at the border: two cases from Canberra (Australia) and Lampedusa (Italy)

In this paper, we compare two seemingly very similar instances in which individuals and organizations within the borders of the global North have memorialized the deaths of irregular migrants at sea: the SIEV X memorial in Australia’s national capital Canberra, and the Giardino della memoria (Garden of Remembrance) on the Italian island of Lampedusa. Unlike ephemeral manifestations of grief, potentially these memorials have effects that reach well beyond their creation. A comparison of the discrete and dimensional models of emotion in music

The primary aim of the present study was to systematically compare perceived emotions in music using two different theoretical frameworks: the discrete emotion model, and the dimensional model of affect. A secondary aim was to introduce a new, improved set of stimuli for the study of music-mediated emotions. A large pilot study established a set of 110 film music excerpts, half were moderately and highly representative examples of five discrete emotions (anger, fear, sadness, happiness and tenderness), and the other half moderate and high examples of the six extremes of three bipolar dimensions (valence, energy arousal and tension arousal). Children with dyslexia tend to find reading stressful. Coping responses, such as task-focused and avoidant behaviours, can help mitigate the stress. Task-focused behaviour is associated with reading development, with others’ at-tributions of success and failure linked to task-focused behaviour. Koulussa ilmenevää kiusaamista on tutkittu varsin runsaasti. Useimmiten mielenkiinnon kohteena on ollut oppilaiden välisissä vuorovaikutussuhteissa esiintyvä koulukiusaaminen. Kuitenkin myös opettajat joutuvat oppilaidensa kiusaamiksi ja opettajat kiusaavat oppilaitaan. Lisäksi opettajat kokevat kiusaamista oppilaiden vanhempien taholta. Näistä koulun vertaisrajat ylittävistä kiusaamissuhteista tiedetään toistaiseksi varsin vähän, minkä lisäksi vertaisrajat ylittävän kiusaamisen käsitettä ei voida pitää vakiintuneena. We limit ourselves to an approach focused on evaluating the human-computer interface.
